  1. I'm having to change from my highly qualified & trusted indy mechanic as he has sadly developed long term health issues and my obvious local choice are the guys at TOYOTEC. I've heard encouraging reports in the area but am fishing for more personal experiences, positive or otherwise, from fellow Forum Lexus owners. I realise the geography factor will limit comment but if anyone has anything to contribute I would very much welcome their input. Thanks in advance.
  2. Transmission issues are very rare, it is possible that despite being a master technician, he/she has never seen this issue before. Have you tried contacting Toyotatec or Toyotec - both in Surrey so not a million miles away from yourself (not sure if Toyotatec would take on such a large job).
  3. No sense speculating, just get a decent garage to diagnose it. You don't really need a Lexus specialist for that, but the two I know of in the south east are Toyotec in Surrey and Japex in Herts. It might be an economically viable repair, or it might mean that your cheapest option is a litre of oil every 900 miles, but you wont know until you get it properly checked out.

Great advice there, if you would prefer to have it taken care of professionally I highly recommend Russell Birch at Toyotec in Redhill, see here for details of the work that was done on mine recently: They fixed several leaks, many of them in the places that @Baldguy mentioned, and the car now stays bone dry in heavy rain.
  5. Well after nearly two months I finally got the car back today. They fixed several leaks all around the back of the car and got it to the point where there were no leaks at all, but then they realised the car has a panoramic roof and tested that just to be thorough and found that was also leaking in more than one place. When they realised this the owner called me and mentioned that if they'd realised at the start that it had a panoramic roof they might not have taken the job at all. Long story short they ended up taking the entire roof assembly out of the car and sealing the cartridge up completely against the roof panels, so the roof will still operate normally and open but the roof assembly will never come out of the car again without breaking lots of things. Perfectly acceptable for a car this old. It now stays completely bone dry under extreme test conditions (way more than normal UK weather) which is a fantastic result. They did mention that they can't guarantee it won't leak again simply because of the age which is fair enough. They sent me the photos in the afternoon before I went to collect the car and it's really clear they've spent an inordinate amount of time on it, so given the unanticipated issue with the panoramic roof I was expecting a much heftier bill than initially quoted. The total was £1968.72, and that included an MOT and oil service. I was stunned. Best money I ever spent. I cannot recommend Russell Birch and Toyotec enough, the time, effort and attention to detail that went into this repair is phenomenal. Mark IMG_2254.mov
  6. I had mine (SC430) done last year by Toyotec in Salfords near Redhill/ Gatwick. Independent Toyota/Lexus specialists seen several SC430s being sorted there over the years. Genuine Lexus parts used and bill was about £850 if I remember correctly. Have taken my car to them for service and MOT every year since I bought it. No complaints
  7. Pretty sure the inserts don’t come off easily on mine, probably bolted on from underneath. Anyway, dropped it off with Toyotec this morning so should hopefully be sorted out in a couple of weeks or so. Could possibly have found someone to bodge it for cheap but in the long run it probably makes sense to just sort it out properly and not have to worry about water ingress ever again.
  8. Hi all, many thanks for you replies. Camshaft position sensor B has been replaced with no good results, also tested all ignition coils and they work good. Checked all connectors and they were ok as well. I know good mechanic would just replace parts one buy one a do a guessing game but I even called Japex who do repair loads of japanese cars and they said if its timing chain they dont want to do it an sent me back to lexus but they say to repair all timing kit will cost as much as this car is worth so no worth doing it. Steven it was just this code as i used techstream to see any other codes. May call Toyotec and see what he says. Used my endoscope and suspect stretch/worn timing chain on VVT sprocket as it looks very loose or tensioner went bad The place where i use my endoscope is highligthed in yellow on one of the pictures. Really dont know what to do, may sell is as it is or do breaking and sell parts only got also a video when engine is running so if any of you is good with diagnostics you can see the stats while the engine is running. its visible on video that misfire count is rising while im reving up engine. https://youtu.be/UokVEEM4eo4
  9. A competent mechanic would never say "dunno" and replace parts on a guess without diagnosing the problem. If you carry on with that approach you'll likely run out of money before running out of guesses. You may well have wasted money on both plugs and a sensor without fixing the original problem. Take it to a competent technician for diagnosis and go from there. I always recommend Toyotec in Redhill but probably a bit far for you, I believe @royoftherovers maintains a list of known good Lexus technicians
  10. Definitely skip. I paid £78 for a regas at Toyotec which includes the decontamination of the system.

Hi Malc sorry so late at replying I'll send a pic of TPS tomorrow, which was recommended by Toyotec, then lexus Gatwick carried out diagnostics check, checking fuel pump and carried out bench test of engine, couldn't get any more than 1200 revs. And because they couldn't find the problem they didn't charge for it. So I'm back to square one. It's cranking but not starting

  13. Toyotec in Redhill seem to get good reports. I haven't tried them myself though, so it would be good to hear of any reviews good or bad.
  14. That's interesting. I think Lexus just noted my driving licence but definitely said charge was for Insurance as was not covered by mine for another vehicle at the time. It's a long way from Devon to Cheltenham but I did not mind the journey as I could visit my sister at Stroud on the way home. However, my service does not necessarily coincide with when it is convenient to meet my sister who with her husband travel abroad quite a lot. So I may get my next service at Lexus Exeter which is 'only' a round trip of 100 miles or so. This ends the 2 year extended warranty I took out. Of course it makes sense to get Lexus to check the traction battery annually but for a 2015 car the service charge, with Relax is high and the cover is not very comprehensive with lots of 'get outs'. Furthermore, Lexus Cheltenham, and I believe other franchises, no longer do the 'Essential Service' for older cars. I may in future use recommended Toyotec in Redhill, Surrey, which is reasonably near my daughter and family with whom I stay a few days 2 or 3 times a year. I might take out a policy to cover major items, something to consider next year after the Relax cover ends.
  15. Sorry, my list is only as John's plus Toyotec (mentioned in different areas elsewhere) plus their branch in Redhill, Surrey which another member recommended awhile back. Of course, it's preferable to build a relationship with a local indie and where one is near if possible but they seem to be few and far between. The next best thing would seem to be to take your car to your nearest or most convenient indie for regular service and if you get caught out with significant problem get your car taken to the nearest indie to where you need assistance or to nearest Lexus dealership. My car is approaching the sort of age when there is an argument for indie servicing. I stay with my daughter (Covid lockdown excepted), two or 3 times a year for a few days and she is fairly close to the location of one of the listed indies, so I may well look at this option next year and perhaps thereafter.

  18. There's Toyotec in Redhill. I don't have personal experience of them but there are a number of recommendations on the forum. Search for Toyotec in the forum search box. Here's one of the comments but there are others.

Yesterday I tried to book my IS300h (122k miles) in for a major Essential Care Service with Lexus Twickenham, only to be informed that Essential Care Servicing has been discontinued as of May 1st. Spoke to Lexus Hatfield, and they confirmed it has been discontinued nationwide. The option seems to have also been removed from the "Book a service" tool on lexus.co.uk. Any mention of Essential Care Servicing has also been dropped from https://www.lexus.co.uk/owners/servicing-and-maintenance/lexus-essential-care/. However other Essential Care repair items (brakes, shocks) remain on offer it seems. Most of the franchisee websites still mention ECS (eg, RRG Group, Currie Motors etc). I had a brief exchange with Lexus UK on Twitter, and they said that Essential Care was still running, but they promised to look into the servicing further and get back to me. So, has anyone else come across this? If ECS really is gone, that potentially means much higher servicing costs to keep your full Lexus service history. I was also planning to take out the Extended Warranty, but since this requires main dealer servicing, I'm not sure this makes sense financially any more. It also raises the question of what the recommended servicing schedule should be for older >100k cars? Is it still 10k / 1yr? Do we just do intermediates now? Or start over on the 20k, 40k, 60k etc cycle? So I'm thinking my alternative plan would be to take it to Toyotec (Redhill) for servicing and then maybe pay for the Hybrid Health Check separately (£59?) at Lexus Twickenham to try and keep the Hybrid battery under warranty at least. Possibly look into a 3rd party warranty. Has anyone else come across this yet?

Might be worth a second opinion, I had an MOT advisory once for "corroded fuel pipes" and when I took it to Toyotec I was informed that it was just a tiny bit of surface rust on one part of the system that was no problem at all and shouldn't have been an advisory. I did nothing to correct it and it was not mentioned again in the two subsequent MOTs I had done somewhere else.
  21. I highly highly recommend Russell Birch at Toyotec of Red Hill - www.toyotec.co.uk. When I needed control arms on my RX I had an astronomical quote from a local garage who were going by the procedure in the book, Russell was around £500 cheaper on the labour because they had a technique to avoid needing to raise the subframe (I think it was something along those lines). The local place quoted 6 hours, he did it in 3 (1.5 per side).
  22. Since you're in London I would highly recommend taking it to Russell Birch at Toyotec in Red Hill. He's done mine twice, car runs great, no issues.
