  1. Years ago when AC was a rare extra one of our managers had a Ford Galaxy Ghia as a company car, trouble was he was so tight he never used it as he said it dented the fuel economy, it was less than 2 years old before the AC unit packed in, warranty job big bill for Ford. I always have my climate control on, it's like your home central heating really, just keeps the car at the right temp for me regardless of what's happening outside. My IS250 is now 8 years young with 115k on the clock and I'm hoping for a good few more miles without any grief.
  2. Sorry to hear about your breakdown. Quick question, did you always have your AC running? I've heard that not using AC often enough can cause early failure with the compressor lunbrication system, having said that 10 years and 170k isn't bad going, my VW Golf failed within 3 years, apparently a common fault.
  3. That's why I never let anyone change the pollen filter other than me. Besides it's so easy.
  4. I now heading towards 110k on my 2010 IS250 after a week away in North Wales, the roads were a pleasure to drive on compared to Gloucestershires poor excuses for roads. My car still feels like it did when I bought it 5 years ago with 57k on the clock. The only issues have been a siezed front caliper that needed replacement and the windscreen washer pump unit my exhaust system looked fine at the last MOT but I do minimise doing short journeys in the Lexus.
  5. Probably down to quality control issues with the chain manufacturer rather than the positioning with the engine design
  6. Don't worry it's a Lexus not a BMW https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj90-n86NbSAhWIDcAKHShUDXkQFggsMAE&url=http%3A%2F%2Fprestige-german-engines.co.uk%2Fengine-issues%2Fbmw-timing-chain-failure%2F&usg=AFQjCNG2BNYSdbm4JzbFiEVvPP6jtGHCxA&bvm=bv.149397726,d.ZGg
  7. Don't bank on it. It also looks like the main dealers just replace calipers rather than refurbishing them but given their labour rates it's probably more economical for them just to change them.
  8. Brake calliper design is a common fault with Toyota, the Lexus ones are the same as a number of other cars in the Toyota range, just a poor engineering design. They can't get everything right, just look at the problems from some other prestige manufacturers
  9. Thanks Steve, that's good news then, it seems the DSG type auto boxes are suffering with high mileage. I have heard a few horror stories about Audi/VW auto gearbox failures
  10. Quick question; is the auto box on my IS250 the torque converter or dual clutch type?
  11. The 4th one for my Lexus which has just passed the 100k mark. The MOT tester said it feels like a new car when he took it out, no advisories. Be warned though, he had an 06 plate IS sat outside, apparently it is a local traders car which had been sat on the forecourt for the last few months, the brakes have siezed up solid, they have had a go at freeing them off with no success so far, so remember folks get your brake callipers maintained as they aren't including in the Lexus schedule.
  12. I guess it's the high mileage on my 2010 SE-I that gave it a low valuation? You don't see many IS250's with very high mileage as most drivers doing 20k a year buy diesels and then spent loads on DPFs and injector repairs/replacements.
  13. No i use a local garage which i have total trust in, tbh i have probably quoted light on the service costs probably 230 average would be closer to the mark, also missed off 2 sets of tyres which would be another £1000 over the last 4 years.
  14. Well after just over 4 years of ownership of my 2010 IS250 and with a 100k now on thee clock I thought I've done a back of a fag packet calculation on what it costs to run a car for a year quite sobering really but interesting that the depreciation is more than the cost of fuel for a year but then not suprising. I feel sorry for the previous owner who lost over £13k in two and a half years ownership when buying new. So here are my figures based on 10,000 miles driving per year; Lexus costs Purchase price = £13500 Value now after 4 years & an additional 42k with 100k on the clock =£6350 Car tax = £280/yr MOT = £40/yr Service/parts = £150/yr Insurance = £240/yr Fuel based on 10k/yr @ 33mpg paying 1.17/litre = £1612 Depreciation = £1750/yr Total annual cost = £4072/yr or 40p/mile
  15. Thanks John, should be a relatively cheap 100k service then as the diff oil & brake fluid was changed last year.
  16. My IS250 has now clocked over 100k and to the best of my knowledge it hasn't had its coolant changed, I'm sure I've read somewhere that it should be done at 120k or 5 years whichever is the sooner. Can anyone help? Thanks FB
  17. Don't get too excited folks, if your IS250 is anything like mine the mpg is 3 mpg out on the high side, best I've achieved in the last 45,000 miles was a true 40 mpg. The best conditions are in summer (more efficient) and making the most of cruise control and staying off the brakes when safe to do so.
  18. I didn't bother getting an extended warranty, had it been a French made car it would have been essential but a Lexus IS250??? http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/lexus/is-2005/
  19. Well just over 4 years under my ownership and odometer clicked over to 100000 miles tonoght. I've never kept a car long enough to rack those miles up but why change now, it's perfect and I only average 10k a year as I like to use my bike in the summer. It's a keeper.
  20. My 2010 IS250SE-I hasn't got them, when you have an auto box as good as this one why would you bother with the effort of having to use paddle shifters or am I just being lazy?
  21. I'm the next generation up, I had a mini 1000 which I think had the same pushrod engine? Out with the feeler gauges with the simple screw and locknut adjustment, even I could manage that job as a 17 year old apprentice! I wondered if Lexus have the bucket and shim type adjustment as do a number of Hondas and the same as my Triumph motorbike.
  22. Does the IS250 require valve clearance checks or are they hydraulically actuated? My motor seems fine, quiet on tickover still smooth as butter when driving, lovely.
  23. Mine came this morning and my wife has had a recall issue for her 2013 Honda for the same issue but on the drivers airbag, probably the same component manufacturer? Most manufacturers aren't renowned for classifying possible or actual component failure as potential safety issues (BMW power steering pumps anyone?),. I had a big argument with Ford in the 90's when my Mondeo plastic cambelt tension came apart whilst in the outside lane of the M6, wrecking the camshaft and bending a number of valves, apparently that wasn't a safety issue, having no functioning engine in the third lane on a busy motorway! I did argue the point hence and did get some compensation. I now only buy Japanese cars and would never have a car with a cam belt, chain all the way!
  24. I've read somewhere that manufacturers specify changing fluids (oils, coolant, hydraulic fluid etc) for a worse case scenario such as short journeys and high humidity levels. My IS had new brake fluid back in 2012 when I bought it. I have it tested every year when in for servicing, this year it needed changing and the car lives outside all year round si im guessing it would absorb more water than in a dry garage.
