    Actually should have been known right from the outset of when the vehicle was first designed, CAN bus has been around for many years and even on the Wikipedia page it mentions the vulnerability to hacking. The vehicle security subsystems should have been designed using an alternate solution. But good news that Lexus does appear to be doing something about it.

    Would you like to go back to the days of hand cranking starts, crash gearboxes, manual ignition timing etc - probably not I suspect. So I guess we all like to benefit from automation, but there will always be differing opinions on how it should be implemented and how people want to use it.

    Most dealerships in the UK seem to be operated by large companies that cover multiple marques, so no doubt there is some dilution as they look to standardise their operations eg is a company that owns BMW, Mercedes and Lexus dealerships really going to offer significantly differentiated service levels?

    Great outcome for the owner 🙂 I do agree, I can't see the average GSF owner would be surfing ebay for cheap used parts.

    I don't think you need a Lexus specialist, many main dealerships will have a local trusted independent body shop who will undertake such work, the quoted cost seems very high for the problem you describe. I'd suggest shopping around locally and see what you can find.

    If you can do some of the work yourself may be viable, otherwise I would agree selling is probably the best option.

    Age will be a factor too, so yours is still the original now 20-years old?

    Parking charges can be expensive, have you compared the cost with either using a taxi or hire car? Your car may not be stolen or broken in to, but there is always the risk of door dings etc in a public car park, may be worth the additional cost for peace of mind.

    So what does £40k get you? Top of the range mini is now >£40k, the price of new cars has seemed to outpace inflation over the past 10-20 years.

    The Gen 4 does give you an alert message on the dash when the key fob battery is low.

    But they could offer to fit them retrospectively at a discounted price. No doubt the Lexus / Toyota senior management are considering their options which range from doing nothing upwards, but cost will no doubt be a significant factor in that decision. It could well be cheaper for them to do a bulk deal with a 3rd party rather than spending significant R&D budget on a fix. They will be weighing up the cost of providing a fix vs reputational damage, lost business etc (just like Ford did for the Pinto).

    Quite possibly, but they may have other vulnerabilities eg poor locks etc.

    I suspect location may be more of a factor and Greater London does not work in your favour, I read somewhere that Range Rovers had become almost uninsurable in London. Age and value seems to have only minimal impact on insurance costs, when I changed to my current RX which had a market value 10 times higher than the outgoing vehicle the increased premium was only an extra £50 and £25 of that was an admin charge.

    I renewed mine last month with LV, it had gone up but I think no more than the overall market trend. I did compare with a quote from Lexus which was around 2.5 times as much.

    Probably true, but I would expect the dealer to keep the customer informed.
