    Hi folks!

A bit of an odd one this...and fortunately it appears to have resolved itself but I'm interested to hear if anyone else has come across this with their NX350h or NX450h.

Yesterday morning I got into the car, started as normal, backed off the driveway to the usual audible sounds of the parking sensors and pulled away. So far, so good... I went to put on my heated seat only to find the screen had somehow 'muted' itself. It wasn't doing it's usual 'bongs' when you press on the screen. The functions were all working perfectly fine - but it was completely silent regardless of what I pressed.

Thinking this was a little odd, I turned on the radio. Low and behold - that was silent too. The radio was on but again, no matter how high I put the volume either by using the knob or on the steering wheel - it remained completely silent. Turning it off and on again resulted in the same issue. It shown the radio was on - but no volume at all.

I get to the last few miles of the journey where I'm usually warned of a speed camera (the two beeps close together) and at the moment, the ladies voice telling me "warning - one mile ahead, roadworks". As you have probably predicted by now - nothing. The car was silent.

So, I pull into work and as it should, the parking sensors worked fine. It was the only audible thing in the car that was working. 😕 I look around but can't see any sign of a 'mute' button or similar that I may have accidentally pressed when getting into the car, but with time pushing on, I had no further time to investigate until finishing work.

At the end of the working day, I got back into the car thinking it's either got it's first pronounced fault, or there's a 'fault' with it's user (i.e - me!) which so far isn't resolved. So, I leave work, put on my heated seat and guess what - the 'bonging' when you press the screen is working again! I turn the radio on - out comes music from the speakers as it should... It even warns me of that speed camera with two quick bleeps - as it should...

    Ummm... 🤔

    This morning? All fine again!

So, did I inadvertently do something which basically silenced everything inside the car barring the parking sensors (which if I did and I'm an idiot - please say so!), or did the car very much 'glitch out' yesterday morning?! I'm curious to see if anyone else has experienced this or similar...

I would suspect some software bug that can occasionally show at start up (On MM19 systems the map occasionally fails to load).  If it happens again, try holding the on off button on the radio down for a few seconds to reboot the infotainment and see if that fixes it. (I assume that reboot procedure still works on MM21).

According to Lexus sales figures, just over 58,000 RX (&RXL) have been sold in the UK since 1999. So 1.5% of all RXs sold in the last 23 years were stolen just in that 12 month period. This would be an even higher percentage if you adjusted for the RXs no longer on the road (scrapped, wrecked, previously stolen etc.).

Apparently there were 1.5 million Fiesta’s on the road in 2023. So those theft figures work out at a 0.4% theft rate. Or about a quarter of the RX rate…

Al,  looking at sales figures of RX and RXl between 2016-2022 (mainly gen 4), there were 16460.

If the thefts were only of RX 4th gen, this is a theft rate of 5.4% per year.  Yikes.  This is an upper bound of course...

    My dad's rx450H was stolen 2:53am 23rd Jan from Birmingham B27 6 area

We had no idea about the security issue or the additional plates until now we are looking for information

Car was stolen via the can bus route through the front, key was in Faraday pouch although they tried that first.

My Dad is beyond gutted, no tracker fitted so hold little to no hope of it returning.

Police have done nothing other than give a crime number.....

    Sorry to hear this.

Please write to Lexus Customer relations and ask them why you had not been notified about the existence of the security plate. cr@lexus.co.uk

    Also consider posting on here:

Hope your Dad's insurance is quick to pay out.

Wow thats a wealth of information.. many thanks! from the way the comments are flowing it seems like the 3rd series is the way to go. I've also noticed that the 4th generation with some cars also can fall into the price range and looking at a 2016+ model, but im so worried about the canbus thefts as a my area is a hot target for car thefts.. will see how things pan out once i start looking..

I was passing by a Lexus dealership and thought I'd pop my head in and see what was on offer. 3rd series being slightly older they didn't have much in the way of car options so were swaying me to pay more and go towards a 2016+ car, not very helpful in that sense. I mentioned Canbus theft and the chap was ignorant to it saying it was the first he had heard.. anyway made my excuses and left..

Anyway back to the point will start my hunt for a RX once i can get this BMW 7 series off my driveway...

    Thanks again all

    Jag

    Jag,

Which dealer claims does not know about CANbus thefts?  At best they aren't keeping up with what's been happening, so I think you were right to make your excuses.

This looks like a measure in absolute numbers so Fiestas etc appear high on the list simply as they are one of the most common / popular cars in the UK by virtue of numbers (which also drives a lucrative trade in being stolen for parts).

Normalised data is a much better comparison eg thefts / number of vehicles so a direct comparison can be made. Lexus make up only a small proportion of cars in the UK, so in absolute numbers the number of cars stolen may look small, but the actual incidence of theft (or likelihood of your car being stolen) is much higher.

Whilst writing the above just received an email from LV, extract as below.

"Over the past year, there’s been a rise in thefts of the LEXUS RX 450H F SPORT AUTO. As a result, we’ve seen a large increase in the number and cost of claims we’ve received for these types of vehicles and have made the difficult decision to stop insuring them."

    Andrew,

Please let us know who you end up getting insurance with in the end.

Thanks Colin for the confirmation. However that table is not in my ES user guide PZ471-U0137-EN V0 from what I can see.

Just one page refers to the USB on page 201 and no mention of GB limits or fat32 - hence my trials and errors!

Is there a separate digital user guide? - not that I need it as it appears to be 32gb fat32.

Progress indeed PDM. Maybe someone somewhere thinks that a phone connected by a cable (ANDROID AUTO etc) and possibly streaming from the internet with no guarantee of a signal is progress over a simple memory stick plugged into a usb with one's favourite albums on there ripped and filed in one's preferred manner, with a guaranteed data flow. Maybe it is, but not for me.

I have no issue with Android auto and streaming etc, I just find the USB option easier and more reliable - once it's up and running.

Having said all of this 32gb can hold a decent number of albums at 192 or 224 mp3 but not so many at my 320 mp3. I find 192 rips to be the lowest to go without significant noticeable degradation of sound quality, rather than a slightly noticeable degradation.

Thanks all for your input, appreciated.

    J

Totally agree with you. All my albums are arranged as I want them (in 320kps MP3) on my memory stick and I can play them through the voice commands.  When I bought the car the software that was on it had broken voice indexing for the memory stick. Eventually we found a pre release version of the software that works (they never fixed it in the current releases) but the staff always said "why don't you stream your music with car play or AA?".  I gave them the same reasons as you, along with not wanting to compromise the quality of the Mark Levinson system.

I think a limit of 32GB is very poor, and can't see why they put in this limit. Any OS these days should be able to read much bigger filesystems than that.  Why limit it?  After all, even my wife's 2015 NX supports at least 64 (and it may even be a 128 in there now).

New to Lexus and my first post after   having mostly BMW, with the odd Audi & Volkswagen in almost 50 years driving. My wife and daughter have had the latest Corolla and Yaris and these have been fine with no issues at all.  I have purchased  an RX 500 H and I’m very disappointed.

The infotainment /car set up and software is abysmal, far too many gremlins.

Here are some of the things I think are poor or don’t work correctly .

Rain sensing wipers only work for a few minutes then need turning off and turning back on again

Carplay and Siri don’t work well as the music volume does not mute

    Lexux link App is poor

The Driver Monitor system tells me every few minutes to sit up so I’ve turned it off.

The grime and dirt that build up on the inside of the front and rear doors is not what you expect on a so called luxury vehicle.

Lexus certainly hasn’t done any cold weather testing for this vehicle as the E Lock system has been unusable this past week with the frost, it’s like going back to the 70/80s

    Fuel tank flap not flush

I can’t work out what the size of the fuel tank is as I’ve been unable to get more than 45 litres in it, even with the system telling me I’ve only 50 miles range left. I believe it’s supposed to be 55 or 60 litre.

I only received one key and was only told about the key shortage after I’d handed over the payment.

You would think that as the RX has a lot in common with the NX that these problems would have been sorted out prior to the RX being launched.

There are other issues all linked to the Infotainment/car set up and software.

I really want to like the car but in truth I wish I could turn the clock back 5 weeks and change my purchase decision and stick with BMW.

Sorry to hear this.  I'm surprised that the door handles on the new RX are freezing in the same way as gen 2 NX.  There have been replacements for the NX that solve this issue so I'm surprised the new design is not fitted on the newest builds (NX and RX) from factory.

The range estimate on Lexus is very very conservative.  You will probably have tens of miles of range left even when the predicted range shows zero.

Try to have realistic expectations about software updates.

Sounds like the fuel door needs an adjustment.

As per the 2023/24 ES Nav owner's manual, only USB drives up to 32 GB are supported.

    image.thumb.png.3781237d515f863a9b46c3007f1ff15c.png

    Good spot Colin.

This is probably why, when I tried a new NX last year at some point and took the memory stick from my RX (primarily to see if the voice command indexing bug for music had been fixed between MM19 and MM21), it never worked!

    Progress....?!?!

  9. Just to note that DLX has an older system (looks like 2019 ES) which is much more like the system in my 2021 RX.  My RX supports 64GB (perhaps I am even using 128GB now... Can't remember, but certainly more than 32) but I never tried 256GB.  There are limits to the total number of files and directories that the system can see.

So, JJK, it seems MM17/MM19 (which are very similar systems - MM19 is essentially MM17 with car play/AA added) do support larger sticks.  You have an MM21 system in your new ES I believe (touchscreen no track pad?).  Can it be that MM21 does not support larger sticks? (It would be odd if this is the case, but then stranger things have happened with Lexus software).

Sorry to sound patronising (I don't mean to..) does the multimedia manual say anything about a limit?

    Paul

  10. Agree it's a nice car etc... mechanically sound, comfortable, reliable...

But there is no way I could recommend a car that could be stolen in under a minute  to anyone. It surprises me that the motoring press doesn't bring up this sort of issue - it's a real world problem for owners. And if the motoring press started addressing this issue then we would be more likely to see a proper fix.

    Hi guys!

I am an NX 300h f-sport 2015 model owner. Love the car to bits!

I have noticed with the remote key recently, when approaching the car it would unlock upon approach. Since I have owned the car for almost 4 years now, this has never happened. I have always had to walk up to the car and just reach for the handle inside and it would unlock then. Is this normal? Mixed feelings about this "feature" always liked how in the dark the LED lights in doors come up only when I am a meter away and I open the door all other lights come up.

The remote key is held in a pouch (always) just got used to that and it never seems to cause issues for the car to recognise the presence of the key. The pouch is one of those signal blocking ones. However when close to car it all works fine.

Also, is there a way to set up a way when you walk away form the car, it closes it self after a short period? I have tried to walk away and waited for minutes but the car would remain unlocked.

    Many thanks all!

I believe this could be a fault (or dirt or water) on one of your door handles.  The car can't do what you describe, so I think what is happening is that the key is in range and one of the door handle sensors is detecting a "hand" and opening the car, even when there is no hand.  Perhaps dirt of water could do this, or a faulty sensor.  I never looked at how the door handle "hand" sending actually works, but it's probably capacitive and hence dirt or water could perhaps trigger it.  Try wiping down the handles?

    Morning Paul

Dealer took a bit of nudging over the line on it but , yes , plates fitted prior to collection.

Hi Ricky, good news that you had the knowledge to ask for the plate to be fitted but I wonder how thefts and insurance is supposed to come down if this is not a standard fit on service or sale for all 4th gen RX.  I take it from your original post that they did not even know about the CANbus plates before you brought it up? If so, that's incredible, and worrying!

The car itself is excellent though, and as you say, chews up miles very easily.

    Good evening

Today we finally bought our first Lexus, a 2017 RX450h.

main dealer purchase with 50k in the clock. It replaces a 2008 Honda accord which we’d owned from 2015 and had been owned by my Dad for the four years prior to that.

Early impressions are of a hugely capable machine that could just chew miles.

My mild negatives are of a somewhat lax dealer experience. They asked me to provide evidence of the canbus issue, which I did.

On collection I’ve had no information provided on the Auc warranty / recovery provision.

They said they would replace the tyres , and they did. 4 x WestLake budgets ( I’m a tight Scotsman so am in sight of both sides )

also, via the in car screen I cannot see any service history information. How do I “activate” that?

Anyways, pic attached. We’re immensely proud of our new wheels. She has big boots to fill , the auld Honda was faultless for 80k miles.

    IMG_2124.jpeg

Hope you enjoy it. Does this mean you got the CANbus protection plate fitted?

Thanks Mincey that is really helpful. With this and what I have already tested, despite what others say on other forums, I think the Fat32 is the only format readable by the car. On this basis, I suspect then that any USB device will also need to be 32gb or less if I remember correctly.

I will test and report back

    Thanks again

FYI 64GB works fine in MM19 systems with FAT32. You need a third party tool to format larger sticks such as http://ridgecrop.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm

Oddly I have learned from my local Lexus dealer today that the 2016 NX (so I assume 2015-2018) is NOT affected by the CANBUS problem either (as I was requesting the steel plate fitted during my next service). The dealership said that Lexus changed the route of the wiring loom, (presumably as part of the 2018 facelift) so the wheel arch isn’t a weak spot in the pre 2018 facelift NX.

Perhaps a cheaper option to consider is to buy a 2016 cherished plate to make your vehicle look older? Anything to deter the thieves!

    Very interesting.

When I asked to have the plate fitted to my wife's 2015 NX I was simply told the ECU was different and so the (RX) plates did not fit. I was not told the wiring loom was routed differently.  I would be interested in seeing if we can obtain more certainty over this.

The real reason is that many people don't buy them

Steven Eagell took my RX at £3k more than WBAC

They simply dont want saloons that they have difficulty selling on. Its all about the SUVs nowadays and the saloons are having a depreciation crisis in comparison

    Rayaan,

If you bought your gen 5 RX from Steven Eagell, then they would have been looking at the complete deal.  WBAC were just looking at the gen 4 RX in isolation, so I'm not sure this suggests that Lexus dealers are more desperate for gen 4 RX then ES any more than it suggests they are keen to sell new vehicles.

Final sales figures for 2023 show almost as many ES sold as RX.  This surprised me.
