  1. Interesting but questionable. 🤔 Just a thought but if you were able to afford a car aged 16 you were certainly not poor! Also difficult to get a licence to drive it at that age if I recall, but I may be wrong. 😕 As for insurance, wow ... so you most certainly were not poor!! 😳 Or maybe it was actually Daddy's ... ?!? Or a 3-wheeler perhaps? 😄 But we digress ... 😉
  2. I put it to you that it's nothing to do with the expense of filling your tank it's more down to practicality and individual preference. Neither, if I may suggest, is it a matter of condensation, unless of course you are leaving the car for a long period, in store for example, in which case it is more likely that your fuel will go off and cause you a problem. 😉
  3. If it were me I would assume nothing and seek clarification Martin, especially with a Dealership involved, the reply you get from Lexus Edgware Road will be interesting both for us readers and your future fuel options. 🙂 BTW, if it's not too painful to revisit, what was found to have caused your catastrophic failure? 😳
  4. When you do, send me the link ... 😉
  5. ... on and on it goes ... time for parachutes I think Nick! 😄
  6. I think you've got that sussed Nick! 😉 But then whereas I used to be "he who knows not but knows he knows not" I now occasionally find that I'm more like "he who knows but knows not that he knows". Ain't life confusing ...? 😂
  7. With respect JJ, for that sort of money I would suggest that you're more likely to find cars with visible issues and potential (invisible) lack of maintenance so without knowing history and more detail it's difficult to advise. In my limited experience of Lexus I would agree with Vlad that the automatic option is better but that's why they're more expensive. Anyway, it's now listed as SOLD so presumably your decision has been made.
  8. Thanks orangutan Mike, may I suggest that Hatfield's response kind of confirms the experience that a lot of us will have had with Dealerships, not specifically Lexus, but in general. 🙄
  9. Another wonderfully controversial thread, a mixture of various but often irrational opinions, financial speculation and comparative irrelevances to create Forum intrigue. ☺️ MY opinion, for what it's worth, is that however old or valueless your car might be, as long as it is well maintained and serving its purpose in respect of your very own criteria, then why change it? 🤔 If your criteria change such that you feel you need more comfort, more power, more economy, more space, more technology then change the car. The only financial reason for changing will be that a mechanical failure or damage repair works out to be substantially more than the car is worth, an individual judgement that will vary depending entirely upon the individual owner. 🙂 And Linas, before you say "define substantially" I'm not going to, because that element of decision making has no statistics or fact-found analysis to back it up because it's opinion-based and very personal. 😉 Have a lovely day gentlemen. 👋
  10. Boy did I have fun reading this thread from start to finish ... all because I'm new not only to Lexus but also to auto boxes and I thought I'd learn something. Which I certainly did, mostly about (active) service efficiency and logical thinking! 😀 Reminded me of an old adage that compares two different character types ... namely "he who knows not but knows not that he knows not" and then "he who knows and knows that he knows". ☺️ As has already been posted quite succinctly ... reader's choice. Fascinating. Thanks guys. 👍
  11. Sage no ... Saga maybe ... a simple enough typo! 😉
  12. Ah yes Philip, but whilst you're crashing the jag the lexus could be stolen! 😉
  13. Hi again Oz, you do choose the right topics for a good night read and a bit of controversy ... next you'll be asking about E5 and E10 so here's a thread that can accompany your late night tipple but try not to take it all too seriously, just pick out the factual bits and make up your own mind ... https://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/127448-is250-and-the-e10-petrol-exclusion-list/ As for the 95/97 issue, I seem to remember a recent thread on that too but can't locate it quickly, no doubt someone else will enlighten you. Stay lucky.
  14. Hi Oz, choice of tyre is so very subjective as has already been clearly illustrated on this one thread of many on this topic. We all have our opinions and that is all they are, opinions, so firstly in my opinion ... if you only need two tyres then I can't see the point in buying four, as long as they're on the same axle? I'm a relative newbie on Lexus too so am still trying out the car, bought mine just 4 months ago, and I needed two new rear tyres so, surprise surprise, I bought two new rear tyres ... not four. After carrying out my own research I chose the Bridgestone Turanza based upon their high rating for economy, wet grip and noise. But most of my past high mileage driving other car marques has been using Goodyear and I cannot fault my experience with them especially their longevity, often getting 40k from one set - which, admittedly, was mainly motorway so it also depends upon how you choose to drive. Odd as it may sound, if I keep the car and when I need fronts I'll probably fit Goodyear. But hey, horses for courses my friend and try not to make your choice too complicated because it really needn't be. It looks like you've taken your pick from the comments on here but don't forget in future to do your own research on ratings using the likes of BlackCircles, Oponeo, Kwik-Fit and I'm sure you'll be fine. Good luck.
  15. I tend to agree with you Michael, I found Colin's response unnecessarily snappy too, not quite what I would expect from a Moderator ... but hey, each to his own. 🤷‍♂️
  16. Your '09 model should be fine with E10 according to my original post ... and there has never been a question over 95 and 98 octane which it's agreed are both suitable ... but it will still be interesting to see what your dealer says, especially if it's contrary to this. 😉
  17. Except that AutoExpress article has a paragraph in it that makes no sense to me ... "The DfT has not yet set a deadline for when UK petrol stations will be required to offer E10. It will not be offered alongside E5 unleaded at the same forecourt, though - once a fuel station has switched to E10, standard E5 will no longer be available there. Motorists whose cars aren’t compatible with E10 will still be able to purchase E5 petrol in super-unleaded form, though, with the DfT confirming the UK will maintain a supply of this fuel." The implication being that there will be special forecourts for E5 fuel ... really? 🤔 EDIT : I've re-read the entire paragraph, it's not very clear, but later makes mention of E5 petrol in super-unleaded form but doesn't say that it will be available alongside E10 ... maybe one is left to assume this will be the case. 🙂
  18. Yeah, my mistake, I read 95 and for some reason typed 91 🙄 . I also read, in fact it's in that Moss 'blog' link I provided, that as well as potentially corroding fuel tanks, lines, pumps and carbs the high level of ethanol in E10 can also degrade gaskets, rubber seals, plastics and hoses. Scary ... 😳 ! BTW I'm not saying that this is the case with my SE-L but if it were as simple as changing the fuel pump with no other potential danger areas then it would be much more straight forward and a problem much easier to solve. Maybe some comms with Lexus might enlighten me in more detail.
  19. Interesting ... my '06 SE-L includes that facility, maybe it was a factory option when new 🤔 .
  20. Thanks all, especially LINAS for answering and explaining my lettering query. I currently alternative between low & high octane tank fills anyway, but I'm thinking it might be best to stick with 98 (E5 - 5% ethanol) rather than the much lower 91 (E10 - 10% ethanol) come the Autumn. Certainly if E5 becomes less available or significantly more expensive over time then I'm thinking Dynolite (Octane Boost) may be the answer to protect from the consequences of high ethanol in my 'excluded' engine. My own research came up with this which I found interesting ... https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/moss-blog-e10-petrol
  21. There seems to be a fuel theme on forums ATM, rightly so I guess as the higher ethanol based petrol option is arriving here in the Autumn, but I have one query for you leading Lexus lights out there. Given the list of excluded Lexus engines (and I quote) ... "E10 petrol is cleared for use in all Lexus European petrol models made from Jan 1998, excluding: • IS250 2.5 litre V6 with engine 4GR-FSE made between Aug 2005 and Sep 2007 • GS300 3.0 litre V6 with engine 3GR-FSE made between Jan 2005 and Sep 2007 • LS460 4.6 litre V8 with engine 1UR-FSE made between Aug 2006 and Sep 2007." So, my query is ... whilst my IS250 engine number starts '4GR' it does not include the letters '-FSE' hence I'm trying to establish the '-FSE' relevance so that I know whether or not my car is excluded from using E10, without the necessity for additives that is.
  22. That sounds about right as the transmitter displays an FM frequency through which it connects so I select and have now stored that frequency like I do for any other radio channel. I tested all four of the transmitters, including the three (returned after testing) from Nulaxy, by calling the same chum so he could give me an accurate assessment of clarity and background noise whilst I was both stationary and moving and the VicTsing came out best with minimal background interference. Early days though, but for the price I can't really complain. Thanks again Ken. 👍
