My 2007 SEL with 140k miles hit a lamppost yesterday. Only pride (not mine) was hurt but what to do?

The lights all still work - it is the housing and plastic front that is damaged. The car has bumps and scrapes at all corners but everything woks and it wafts along a treat. I have yet to ask my friendly garage guy for advice. A body work place would want to do a proper job with new light unit but I guess this would be uneconomic. I need it patched up- I don't care what it looks like if it is road legal.

    Suggestions?

This may not be something you want to consider, John, but there’s always a possibility that the other valves - being of similar age. I expect  - may also be developing the same problem.

In any case, the batteries in TPMS valves are generally considered to have a useable life of up to ten years.  You don’t mention the state of the tyres, but are they also approaching the point of replacement?

Of course much depends on how long you propose to keep the car and how much you’re prepared to spend on it.  But it may be worth considering that, for example, you can negotiate a good deal on a new tyre AND valve as a combined purchase - but if you have to replace the valves later one by one, you’re also paying to have the tyre removed and replaced every time.

all fair - the tyres are newish like 2-3 yrs old with less than 20k - good tread

Next time I am in the US I will pick up more TPMS pre-emptively

My local charges 20 quid to re-rim and bead / check the tyre

Death by a thousand small services

  3. Hi all

    Hope you're well - I have a gs250 that I bought used

The tyres lose air pressure in a uniform way except one -- looking for advice on how to test / fix

    Context
    1) The tyres I inflate to 36.5 psi and over two weeks in London - 3 deflate to c32psi and 1 rim deflates to 25 to 24 psi
    2) I had Lexus Edgeware check the rims about a 1 yr ago and they said they could find no bends / cracks on the rims or issues in the tyres
    3) I had them rebead and reseat the troublesome rim - it still deflates faster
    4) About two months I had a local garage - rebead the rim again and now the problem persists

At a loss as to how to diagnose or fix the issue - any advice much appreciated!!

    Thnx!

Possibly sounds like a failed relay. Open the fuse box up - you should be able to determine which relay it is. Quite possibly that's what's been causing the battery to go flat.

Whilst relays can sometimes be fixed, the best course of action is to replace.

Got a multimeter and a new Battery coming tomorrow - will troubleshoot and take it to a garage if my limited skills fail....

  5. Hi all

Long time, no chat -- hoping you can kindly help me with some GS issues

The GS is a weekend car and frankly only gets driven 1 to 2 times a month

I am having issues with the Battery and tyre pressure

    1) The Battery seems to have gone completely flat one week after a full recharge (Battery tender) - I couldn't locate a light or an electrical drain that had been left on.  Any advice on how to proceed here? My thought is to replace the Battery (likely 3+ yrs old) and then go from there. Any suggestions here?  Where should I get the Battery?

    2) The tyre pressure is leaking unevenly amongst the tyres. One in particular is losing c5 more PSI every month or so vs the others.  I took the car to Lexus a yr ago, asking them to inspect the wheels (thinking bent rim, bead giving way) and they couldn't find anything.  Any suggestions here?

    Thanks in advance!

  6. Hi all

I have a 2012 gs250 w 93k miles on it.  Looking for advice on service going forward - this is a 2nd or weekend car that used for the occasional Costco run and weekend trips

I would be surprised if I did over 1500 miles a yr.  My question is whether it makes sense to keep servicing at a Lexus dealer or better off using an independent and just keeping records. There are no issues w the car at this point in time.

My guess on book value is like 7 to 8k

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi John,

Is there a reason you think the wheel is bent?

First thing to do is to spray some soapy water around the rim and look for air bubbles, which should pinpoint your leak.

The last time something like this happened to me, it turns out that the TPMS valve was actually at fault and a small turn with a ratchet to tighten it fixed the problem.

    Hi

The tyre pressure readings are uneven between the tyres. It was 28 (pumped to 36 PSI 3 weeks before) while the others were 32-33

Is it common for tyres to move that kind of pressure in less than a month?

  8. Hi all

I got a TMPS message yesterday. Wondering if what I am seeing is a small or a large problem

I filled the tyres 3 weeks ago to 36 PSI.

Yesterday, the front R + L were 33 PSI each, the rear left L 28 PSI and rear R 32 PSI

My read is that the rear L rim could be bent. I could see any puncture on the tyre

Any thoughts / suggestions?  How much does it cost to unbend a rim?

    Cheers

    John

    Hi All,

Fantastic community here and loads of great information. I did read through as many posts as possible regarding this but I was hoping a little more advice since it's 2020 (makes the cars I am eyeing up even older)

I had to scrap 2003 E46 BMW 330D due to ULEZ kicking in! That car has been the most reliable car I have ever owned not needing a single repair in 7 years of ownership.

Looking got a second vehicle I have found Lexus to be the best option for another reliable ride but with added luxury.

I am torn between the following:

    GS450h 2008 with 125k on the clock

    IS250 SE-L 2007 with about 90k on the clock

    IS250 SE-L 2009 with about 100k on the clock

I live in Ilford, essex but always driving to and from East London. Driving around London too.

I am looking for which car would be most reliable.

The GS offers so much power but I am concerned about real world MPG. From the posts here from 3 years ago it seems that you get mid 20 mpg. I also read here of several expensive maintenance repairs that occur.

A car this age I doubt will have any lexus warranty. I am particularly scared of the hybrid repairs - especially battery ( I think maybe more because I am not familiar with hybrid)

Hybrid + 3.5 lite V6 sounds amazing on top of al the luxury comfort.

The IS seem safer to me due to it not being an old 12 year hybrid with a bigger boot. But my concern here is comfort - I am sick of feeling the bumps on the road in my lowered 15 year old BMW!

What would you advice from your experience? Is the real world MPG that different between the two? Do you feel all the bumps on the roads in a IS250? Would IS250 have far cheaper(less?) Problems?

I am not extremely car savvy but I do like a bit of power and a bit of luxury. My main think is reliability - I can really do with a car that won't cost me a fortune at this moment in my life. I would say I got 30mpg on my BMW.

I guess a GS300 might be another option?

I do appreciate any help or advice

    Thanks

    J

GS body is bigger than IS to a substantial degree - it's a longer wheelbase (smoother ride) but harder to park -- dimensions very similar to a 5 series I think

I err to the bigger, more expensive car (GS over IS) b/c the build quality, level of std equipment tends to be better

The road tax is a consideration for a non-hybrid

Have a look at the 4th gen GS250 - I find it fast enough and not a popular choice (i.e. I would think you'll get a good price)
