  1. I am amazed that anyone could possibly believe that electric vehicles would remain untaxed, for the simple reason that the previous year's tax revenue from 'Road Tax' (VED) was in excess of £7Bn. As soon as some vehicle owners are allowed to pay less VED, then there's going to be a shortfall in optimum revenue collection. The UK is fairly desperate for revenue - (and will be for some years to come), so the likelihood of dishing out 'free passes to car ownership' is less likely to happen than Elon Musk inviting me on to his Board of Directors. VED rates by size/type of vehicle will always change, (normally increase at least by the rate of inflation), and, to quote Benjamin Franklin ".....in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes"

I think that British Rail bacon sandwiches were a poor imitation of proper sandwiches
  3. I researched, specified and fitted four solar panels to our boat 10 years ago, (so, my needs then were very different from domestic requirements today and for the foreseeable future - and technology has moved apace too) However, the principles are similar. One needs to determine the likely available level of light available in each given location, the type of panel most suitable for that location, how and when you wish to use the power, the capacity of your battery bank (and the optimum is relevant to all the previously listed parameters AND the cost/charging rate of the various battery types, and the most efficient controllers to drive it all. The process can be complicated, and there are many (energy vs cost) variables, so please don't scrimp with your research, (and do NOT accept initial quotes) Also be prepared to accept that maximum power is provided when you need it least (bright summer days) and comparatively little is available when you need it most (winter)
  4. This is how to be wise before the event!!!! 👋
  5. Unfortunately you're accurate. It's because wagon-pilots are wholly obsessed with their own being, their 'schedule', their driving time limits, and believe that these parameters are supreme to road safety or any other road traffic's requirements. Unfortunately, Bus drivers, taxi pilots, couriers and all other road users (including cyclists and e-scooter astronauts) hold similar beliefs.
  6. UK Highway Code: Rule 57 When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.
  7. Hmm..... Connect the seatbelts?
  8. There's no-one as convinced as a fully fledged convert! Welcome aboard Ian! 😊
  9. I will be thinking of you! (I'll put a roll of Andrex in the 'fridge in your honour!)
  10. Fingers crossed for you Herbie! And, importantly - PLEASE don't worry..just remind yourself that it is much, much better to be checked out, and IF there's a problem it can be dealt with promptly, rather than not be checked and not know! I've had a couple of colonoscopies in the last four years, and both were negative (hooray!). However, unlike Piers' unfortunate experience, I didn't have any sedative or painkillers prescribed, and really didn't need them - so it's not a definite that there's pain involved. (And, clearly I was born a geek, but I found it fascinating to watch the process on the operating theatre's TV screens and chat through the event with the lass controlling the camera. (I've seen 'poo' in a new light! 💩😂)
  11. Hi JJ, You'll have a few responses on this question, a good many of us finally settle on Michelin Cross Climates. When we bought our car three years ago it was shod in Dunlop SP Sports, - not a particularly pleasant experience tbh. I raided my cats piggy bank and treated the car to new Cross Climates. Deep joy.
  12. Buy him a case of beer for Christmas - - it's always appreciated! (Assuming that he drinks beer!)
  13. One thing's for certain - - it didn't do any motorway speeds on Jersey!
  14. It's actually a £3.00 discount off 300 litres - so only about 0.6% discount! (1p per litre!)
  15. A small steel confectionary or biscuit box works admirably (and reliably) for storing the keys at home/workshop/office/countryside hideaway/fishing spot. If you've a friend/son/daughter/partner whom enjoys welding, a small stainless steel box could make a useful present from them. At a push, a standard steel spectacle case also works a treat.
  16. Don't worry about your failure Paul - - - your *personal MOT/servicing isn't done at Domestic Road.... . It'll be at the LGI!
  17. You've obviously been to Castleford, Phil.
  18. Barry, We do not have a landline at home, so have to source all our internet requirements via a Mi-Fi. We use a TP-link M7350, (and have done for many years) and can simultaneously run a couple of laptops and a TV from it without a problem. I leave it turned on and plugged into the 5v charger, albeit via a 240v supply, and have never suffered a problem with it, nor has the battery ever 'swollen'.

  20. After a few years of driving our RX450, I have proven that cruise control is at it's most effective on 'flat' roads with a fairly consistent speed of 40mph+. When on hilly roads, in busy traffic or when travelling under 30mph, I experience a better mpg with the cruise control turned off.

  22. (An 'outside the box' suggestion) Would your local library(ies) have a copy of a workshop manual?? If they do, they may be willing to part with one?
  23. What a pretty little motor! (Or should it be 'handsome'?)
  24. Without entering any argument that could be misconstrued to be political (in any way whatsoever), I've not an issue with either one's local Council, County Council, or the country's Government outsourcing the reporting of some of the "illegal" elements of society. This could cover littering, dog fouling, parking, speeding, overt drug-dealing and antisocial behaviour (for example). There are many facets of the society we live in that could be improved if only more members (of that society) would be prepared to help and improve it.
