  1. Yes 51Ah on mine too. As I remember, the 45Ah is on the Prius. Alternative suitable 45 Ah deep cycle batteries are available in the UK for the Prius but interestingly have a label saying the 5 year guarantee is void if the battery falls below a specified level, note on top of battery. https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/25408899742 Unfortunately, the UK stockist will not stock the 50Ah version with the correct terminal layout unless we can order 200 units for our 3Gen RX. If Lugi is correct that the 4Gen RX450h has a 70Ah battery, he may be able to use the 75Ah version of the above 45Ah battery which is at least stocked in the UK when a replacement is required for his car if available where he is Unfortunately, it is too long for the provided boot location in the 3rd Gen RX otherwise a 50% increase in capacity would be great. https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/254370212679?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&itemid=254370212679&targetid=1000009159107&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=1006709&poi=&campaignid=10199418955&mkgroupid=101401893585&rlsatarget=pla-1000009159107&abcId=1145984&merchantid=7449214&gclid=CjwKCAiA2O39BRBjEiwApB2Ikka35jDV4OBcADrIC1XZOVXYuHrnTMLcPzsmPbaRsc5zuoJGGRXMRRoCZCUQAvD_BwE
  2. I generally buy what grade is recommended by the manufacturer of the car for use in a particular territory. I know for my RX450hin the UK it's Toyota 0-20 fully synthetic available through Toyota or Lexus and also is sold on the net. I read this oil was to a formula produced for Toyota by Mobil. I did ask Lexus what they used when servicing my car and again it's a variation of a Mobile Oil. I did post it a long time ago but it's not to hand. It seems to be rated just below Mobile 1. Actually, all reputable branded oils are good these days and have to pass certain standards but some can stay within spec longer than others. If you get the recommended grade (which can be affected by climate or how old the engine as well as operating conditions), provided you change your oil and replace filter with a decent one as recommended you should be ok. Obviously, cars with worn engines, used normally just for many cold starts, or left for many months without an oil change are going deteriorate more quickly. In the USA they tend to do far greater mileages than in the uK and mention on forums how they have their oil analysed when changed, cut open oil various filters to see what is best and the like, so go into this more deeply than we do.
  3. Maybe be late but better than never, you should not allow a car battery, especially one of the AGM (Absorbed Glass Matt) Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) type fitted to later RX models with battery in boot to go flat as this can seriously reduce the life of these small but expensive batteries. Another way to keep them adequately charged is to use a smart trickle charger with an amp rate not exceeding 5. and the most appropriate mode selected. The most mentioned model is the CTEK 5 but of course there are many others. Using a higher powered charger can lead to gassing and blow out through the battery vent, again shortening it's life. The capacity of the battery is small and needs to be checked every couple of weeks if car is not otherwise charged. When it needs replacing the same type should be installed, usually only available through Lexus dealers. The get out of jail solution Herbs suggests is a good emergency solution but means battery has been allowed to discharge too much but may still work but with a shortened life.
  4. Is there any advantage to this unless you are off roading as apart from the extra weight your are carrying around they appear to make it more difficult to clean in part? Only asking as have seen some fitted to RX model also.
  5. I must say it's tempting to opt for the 4th gen when you see pics like this of good low mileage cars that are selling for around 50% of original price but I think you need to be the sort of driver that is going to put a lot of miles on to do this. It would be interesting to know how the take up of all electic cars is going to affect prices even discounting the new RX when this is released. Heart says one thing while head says hold on to what you have and then consider the all electric models and the charging infra structure in say 4 or 5 years time. It said on TV today that the take up of all electric cars had doubled this year. Might this cause ICE engines, even hybrids to depreciate more quickly?
  6. also remember not to get your bare fingers on glass part of these bulbs as fine oil from fingers can cause deterioration.
  7. I have the Bosch Rotak too. It feels flimsy but does the job. It came with 2 batteries that still work and is now about 7 years old. Unfortunately, I forgot I had left battery on charge and some three days later battery was OK but charger kaput. I bought a second hand dedicated charger with battery off ebay and the extra battery is useful when grass is rather wet and more is taken out of the battery. This reminds me that I must get replacement parts as the switches one one side no longer work. As regards the motor mower, petrol should still be available for many years. I have a very sturdy petrol self propelled Masport that I have not used for several years as we now have a smaller area of grass and the battery mower does the job. I must do something with the Masport, 'the' mower in Australia and New Zealand. i
  8. Perhaps there is a difference in the way the 12v battery is protected on my RX450h but if left in Aux mode for 20 minutes, while I listen to the radio, it cuts it off. I suppose it's good that it protects the battery and surprised OP's car does not work in this way but a little annoying that you have to reset. to continuing listening.
  9. Many years ago I had a v6 Camry which clanked or clicked when on the road. It sounded like the front disks were moving even though the wheel nuts were properly torqued up. I took it into local Toyota branch (who got elbowed out when Jemca opened a large branch fairly near). Anyway they couldn't find the problem and I knew pads and discs were fine. I then remembered not long previously that I had had new bushes fitted, anti roll bar and maybe others - too long ago and many cars back to remember precisely. Well I checked these at home and found they were all loose! I torqued correctly and voila, no more noise! Not saying this is your problem but might be. In situations like this you have to check everything.
  10. Who replaced the kidneys with a butterfly? Even worse than the ever expanding Lexus Grill!!
  11. and if you don't drive it ensure battery remains sufficiently charged by using appropriate trickle charger. If you allow a battery to go flat you shorten its life of kill it. I note you say 'tongue in cheek', so you are doubtless aware of this anyway.
  12. On several occasions I have noticed a delay in acceleration when called for on my 3rd gen RX450h. It's like having a flat sport with some of the old carb fueled cars or very pronounced turbo lag, neither of which is on the RX. I have found it mostly happens when going slowly on battery power and then when immediate urge is required. I thought the lag might be due to the engine having to fire up and cut in. None of my previous cars suffered in this way but none of them had stop/start and battery propulsion. I have to say I do prefer kick down on conventional auto boxes which provides more immediate response, even though dropping a gear or two in the process. Because I generally drive in a relaxed way, the extra noise created by the Lexus transmission I find tolerable most of the time but irritating when I want performance. It is one of the few downsides I have found with Lexus. l
  13. As regards shock absobers, this is not the car that you take off road but could be affected by driving over severe pot holes and fast over speed bumps so difficult to say how they compare now if you have not driven in earlier life. Some people drive them until theyleak or become more bouncy. I think you really need smebody who knows the model as the press down on the corners method is not very accurate. I have seen shocks that have been removed and tested on a machine but that may prove unnecessary. There can be quite considerable differences. It's a bit like torquing up nuts. The person with little experience if subsequenly checked with a rorque wrench will show a greater varience than a man who is tightening nuts all day. So best go to the person who knows how the shocks should perform
  14. First I have heard of it and it was not mentioned as a gee up when I was considering and subsequently plumped for the 2 for 1 deal in mid Sep. Not good news if correct.
  15. I take it management is the other half? lol. FWIW I agree with the other guys who like the fancy named maroon one, a restrained colour that suits the 3rd Gen. The more stand out Mesa is more suited to the more radical 4th Gen in my eyes so yeah, I think you will have to dig deeper if you want the Mesa 4th Gen or wait until they depreciate further. This may happen more quickly when they bring out the lighter and superior platformed RX but I don't know when that will be.
  16. I think you would do well to get a 4th Gen RX450h except pehaps one with high miles for 20K. These are available in Mesa Red as were some of the much older ones. However, when I looked for my 3rd Generation model the only red ones I could find for sale in red was a darker red which I would say was nearer maroon. Makes me wonder if Mesa was dropped for the 3rd generation. Mesa outside with cream inside is a great combination. Hope your quest is successful.
  17. This is something that should be carefully considered. The guy who originally bought my car had every extra/upgrade option including TV, other than screening curtains and Xenons. I bet he found out the hard way after purchase as I did how poor the standard lighting was and in need should have forgone a different option for the xenons. Maybe somebody can go to school on this. I will say that I have found xenon dipped lights to be near enough as good as LED. However, LED seems to be longer lasting which is just as well bearing in mind what is involved if the LED headlights fail.
  18. There was a time when you could get away with this and a good many did and found the lights improved for them. However, with the wrong reflector for HIDs this results in a less tight beam and more scatter, much to the annoyance of oncoming drivers so more recent lighting regs ruled against this so an MOT failure. I found the halogen lights on my 5 series BMW appalling but retrofitted BMW Xenons which was an option. My car already had wash wipe and I got the level and aiming sensors off Ebay and also Xenon headlamps. I had an electrical specialist do the wiring using BMW retrofitting instructions. This was a very expensive and involved exercise but made a vast improvement. If HIDS were an option for your car, you could do the same but with the cost of new headlights as well as all the other parts, you are likely to find this very costly.
  19. I had lost firing on one of 6 cylinders on an Opel Commodore GSE Coupe many years ago. Easy in those days to check which one without tools. I just pulled plug leads one at a time until I found the cylinder that didn't cause further deterioration in tick over. Plug was OK so good chance it was injector. I replaced this and all was well again. I had it in mind to take all 6 injectors to a Bosch Centre, for cleaning and resetting if I had further trouble but got away with replacing the one. Are injectors serviceable nowadays?
  20. I don't think you can do more than has been suggested here without getting a tester. You, could drive a mile or so and listen to a bit of music until the car won't start and then call the emergency services out if you are a member. They will then get you going and advise if it is the battery or alternator that needs replacing.
  21. It was mentioned earlier in this thread that the breakdown services had been called out several times due to the battery going flat. You should never let your battery go flat as the least it will do is to reduce its life. This calls for more frequent check of voltage if the car is insufficiently used as during lockdown for example. It would have been helpful if Lexus had included a readily viewable voltage gauge as Herbs has added on his car. A smart charger that will not overcharge the battery is better and fast chargers are best avoided to charge a standard service battery.
  22. Good news, Snows estimate for repair to my car was promptly accepted by Tesco today. I got a brief run down of major parts plus labour and it comes to an eye watering £9,308!! This includes the majority of the exhaust including the oft stolen central cat. I asked if I could have the cat as it is apparently OK but was told that this becomes the property of the other parties insurers and it is required that a certificate is signed that this along with other parts has gone for scrap. What a crying shame this is when people are waiting for these! The price does not include replacing the rear hatch only repairing it. The estimator thought the intermittent drill like noise was caused by the crunched up exhaust knocking against the packing but I said I thought it could be a pump serving the air suspension where there could be a fault caused by the crash. This will be checked out and could potentially add to the cost. I also asked that the service battery be trickle charged or that might otherwise need replacing.
  23. Looks better than latest RX in my opinion. Just think how good the next Gen NX will be and using latest engine and efficiency!
