  1. If car is being bought from Lexus dealership you will get a good warranty. There is also some protection from a car dealer though can vary. If private sale, perhaps best you get inspected by somebody familiar with the model. These cars can look good and generally wear well but some of the parts are very expensive to replace. The water pump is one of them due to the amount of labour involved. A good service record and rectification of any problems found, particularly advisories in MOT's good to know done.
  2. The auxiliary battery does not charge the battery, it only powers up the traction battery that does the heavy lifting. Car doesn't have an alternator but a generator which powers the traction battery which in turn boosts the 12v battery. Unlikely you are driving too efficiently as traction battery well charged and would supply 12v battery and if this falls traction battery not well charged motor would top it up. A faulty 12v battery can cause problems.
  3. Surely Lexus would be able to provide paint code. Assume existing bumper can be satisfactorily repaired and repainted.
  4. Pleased you are happy with the trade in you negotiated and wish you well with your new steed. Invariably, most of us trade at some point and may find something more suitable or tempting in another marque. Maybe you will return to a Lexus at some future date. I was thinking about my RX today and how very comfortable it was. This is my first of a number of priorities due to back problems. When the time comes to move on it might be quite a problem to get something so comfortable. Anyway, let's see some pics of your Scooby and feel free to look in on your friends here when you feel so inclined.
  5. If the helpful stranger was to crash the car reversing, it would be interesting to learn how her insurers would react when she explained why somebody was driving her car or alternatively just drove off with it! I have never had a car with a rear camera and must say it is helpful in knowing how close you are to a vehicle you are backing up to. However, it is dangerous to rely on the camera in say a car park as it only covers a small angle and it is easy to miss cars about to transverse across your rear, so you do need to check mirrors too.
  6. Aerodynamics have an increasing effect at ever faster cruising speed, so the difference in mpg between cruising between say 60-70 and 70-80 is going to be much worse in the latter case, much more power being required from the engine. In an SUV you pay the price for a heavy less aerodynamic but more comfortable car. That said, I think the MPG of all comparable vehicles has improved slightly over recent years, particularly as they have grown in weight with loads of extra equipment and size. Hopefully Lexus will squeeze a little more economy from the next model as they did with the 4th gen RX but often power and economy don't always go together. I am sure Lexus could tune the engine to provide more power but probably with worse mpg We are nearing the end of ICE cars and self charging models have undoubtedly extended their production. However, one wonders how much further development will go into research after the latest engine from the Toyota Rav goes into the new NX when Toyota will be spending a lot of resources developing electric and hydrogen powered cars.
  7. Try breaking hard two or three times but don't overdo it, you don't want cooked pads. Make sure nothing is behind before doing this. Some disc/pad combinations are more susceptible to this creaking/groaning sound. I get it more on my BMW but not 3Generation Lexus.
  8. To be fair, the Lexus clock on my 3 series RX is rather small and not prominently displayed but I can see it at night!
  9. Reports on the lightweight ones confirm they need to be replaced after a time. I keep my key in a substantial aluminum purpose designed case called 'Vonetti'. It's rather bulky and relatively expensive but should last a lifetime. The V2 version advertised here seems to have more heavily radiused edges than mine so better still https://www.amazon.co.uk/VONETTI-Alpha-Shield-V2-9cm-Aluminium-Black/dp/B07XKV3J8M
  10. Y You are correct Herbs, Lexus dropped Air Suspension for 4th Generation for all versions of RX
  11. I don't think it would do any harm because alternators do occasionally fail and you may not notice immediately as car continues to function. I would just add to Herbs comment I hope you don't have to stop for petrol or anything else en route because restarting a great lump takes a lot out of the batter. This reminds me of an experience I had with one of my 3.2 Litre Fiat coupes many years ago. There was a public transport strike and I knew my alternator had failed but didn't have time to exchange it for a spare I had. I needed to get to my office in London so I fully charged the in situ one and also a spare overnight and recharged both batteries at a point near my desk. I was then able to get home which was about 12 miles away and probably took some 45 mins. I was then able to fit a replacement alternator. Of course things have got more electronically complex on cars since then, but maybe you could extend your battery reserve to linking up say with jump leads in parallel to another battery if you have one or can borrow one but I am not familiar with your car.
  12. Unfortunately, even when damage is not your fault, insurers generally show it as an accident and consider you are more likely to be involved in another so load your premium. Very unfair but happened to me. I suppose statistically if you parked in the car park every day there is a greater chance of being hit but doubt was the case with you. Similarly, they argue that because there may have been some accidents on a road where I was hit in the rear, I was more at risk assuming I regularly used that particular road, whereas in fact I have used it no more on average than once a year. Good luck with getting a replacement door.
  13. I'm going for the new model from Iceland because it's the most cool.
  14. As promised, I contacted the parts departments today of two major Lexus franchises regarding the 12v battery for my car representing the 3rd generation and some earlier generation RX450h cars. These were the franchises of Snows Exeter and Thistle Groups Cheltenham Branch. Both confirmed that there was only one battery specified for my car, the AGM S55D23L and that it was only available as a 51Ah battery. Cheltenham kindly unboxed a new one to check the specification. So this further supports what I thought was the case. I could not establish the specification of the 12v battery of the 4th generation because either the chassis number or the registration number of a car is needed and I have neither. In the circumstances, I repeat my request for somebody to give me the specification and size of the battery on their car so I can check how this compares with previous generations. Thank you.
  15. Tom, Firstly, I am pleased for you that your Yuasa battery is serving it's purpose to your satisfaction. I am familiar with Yuasa from my motor cycling days where they were widely used. As you may be aware, there is not such an extensive range of battery sizes with AGM batteries as with standard flooded lead acid batteries, so due to restraints of the battery compartment size, we are looking at the S55D23L for the 3rd series RX 450h and some of the previous series too, unless you are prepared to alter the size of said compartment. So what you have been led to believe, (wrongly I strongly suspect), is that the Ah for the AGM S55D23L Pan battery has been increased from 51 to 70, a large increase that no other manufacturer I can find can match for this size of battery. This in itself is strange because if you examine the specifications of leading battery suppliers across the board you will find that the figures are all very close. I do agree you can buy a free flow or EFB 70amp battery that will fit but not an AGM. Here is a current advertisement for a new S55D23L OEM Panasonic battery and you will note that it is 51 Ah, not 70. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/383745967499?campid=5338627314&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=10050&customid=EAIaIQobChMI5LfokfiN8QIVS7rVCh3ukQSZEAQYGCABEgItZvD_BwE&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&customid=EAIaIQobChMI5LfokfiN8QIVS7rVCh3ukQSZEAQYGCABEgItZvD_BwE&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5LfokfiN8QIVS7rVCh3ukQSZEAQYGCABEgItZvD_BwE I will check this with a couple of Lexus dealerships tomorrow and come back with what is correct.
  16. Tom, I think something may be incorrect here as I inferred in my last post, so I will spell it out in terms of what I know and what I have been told, which is not necessarily the same thing! My 450h is one of the last of the 3 series with the 12v battery in the boot. It is a valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) AGM battery (Absorbed Glass Mat unit), being OEM Panasonic giving 51 Ah. This is the biggest size of AGM battery you can fit unless you carry out some work to raise it in the battery compartment to effectively increase the length available or you can fit a non AGM free flowing type lead acid battery within the battery compartment to increase Ah without alterations. The pros and cons of doing the latter have been discussed at length both in this thread and others. However, battery suppliers, manufacturers and emergency service providers all agree that if a car was originally fitted with an AGM battery, it should be replaced with an AGM one and this will be the route I take. I am going to replace my Pan battery with a 60Ah AGM but that is really a side issue. I noticed that Lexus Parts Direct (from whom I and others have purchased various discounted items previously), were advertising batteries said to be for the RX4 series from 2017 onwards at a cost of £199.04. As this was less expensive than the asking price for my Pan 51Ah in my car, I asked out of interest how much this would be. I was told it was the same price and the same battery ref. I was further told it was a S55DL23L which is indeed the reference on my battery. So if that is correct, which I doubt, this means my battery ran on to series 4 which I think must be wrong - hence my request for somebody to post dimensions and references of a 2017 onwards RX450h. Sorry, but I don't believe you can retrofit a 70 Ah AGM battery in the late 3 series without seriously cutting and welding the battery box to take it. I have had to raise the battery base in order to accommodate a 60 Ah AGM one and this is a very tight fit only allowing a couple of mm each end for expansion. Regardless, it does mean the S55DL23 at £199.04 is far less expensive than hitherto and I thought somebody might benefit from this. I would carefully check references before purchasing though. I don't remember how long the S55DL23 goes back as some early cars had the battery under the bonnet and were able to accommodate a larger one and possibly used a non AGM one at that.
  17. I suspect one tooth out upsetting valve timing if it is as noticeable as you say. If it was so bad as to cause damage to valves/pistons you would be aware so could be a learning curve for it. If not back to previous performance after another couple of days, I would take it back to whoever did the work and tell them if they can't sort it you will take it to Lexus and expect the non Lexus dealer to pay for rectification.
  18. Back to batteries! Some of you folks will be aware that Lexus Parts Direct were reducing the discount they gave us to as not to be so close as trade prices. I therefore checked their web site to see how this would affect their prices. They show the RX450hL 2017 on as £199,04 (inc VAT), battery ref 28800-31291 also with free shipping for Gold Club Members. During my conversation with 'Josh', I asked out of curiosity how much it was for the 3 series like mine and he checked it out on their system using my reg number and it came up with the same battery as above. (I was under the impression that the 4th series had a larger battery but perhaps not. So far from increasing the cost of this battery, they have now reduced it! (Strange!) So anybody wanting a battery might do well to contact them while the offer is still there but check the series as some earlier series used a different battery. Now in order that it doesn't keep me awake at night, LOL, I would be grateful if somebody with a 4 series could post the battery dimensions of their 4 series along with any designation so I may know for certain whether that miniscule battery in my 3 Series has indeed been carried over into the 4th Series or that Parts Direct have got it wrong. /lexuspartsdirect.co.uk/parts/lexus-rx/lexus-rx-phase-iv-2015-present/lexus-rx-4-engine-service-kits/lexus-rx450hl-phase-4-12v-starter-battery/ Finally, I mention in passing that I have purchased a Halfords 027 AGM 5 Year warranty (Yuasa) battery for my 3 series, while these were on offer and with Gold Member discount. I have assembled all the parts and have just to modify the original battery tray. This will increase the Ah over the original Pan battery by almost 20%. It also has other advantages. I will detail how I did it, show pics and give links on another thread I started within the next 2 weeks, hopefully.
  19. Wow, £1100 for a bonnet respray. I wonder how much a wrap would cost (no not the stuff to get hyped up on), although the whole car would doubtless have to be done after making good dings and scrapes from rust. Does wrapping a car offer significant protection and for dings is it easy to just re wrap any affected area without re doing the entire car without obvious differences in the finish?
  20. Some useful info here but birds sometimes hit curved or vertical surfaces as I can testify living near the coast. I use the old method of soaking and if necessary re-soaking several layers of newspaper in water and applying to affected area. Very warm water works quicker. This softens deposits enabling much easier wipe off with micro cloth. It can require a bit of ingenuity to keep newspaper in place sometimes.
  21. thread withdrawn as better covered on another thread.
  22. One has to wonder when it seems these are only in effect a form of junction box between the spare battery and the car electrical system why so many of these are sold. Would it just be that it is more convenient to plug into the OBD2? An example There are many such 'savers' advertised, mostly cheap Chinese ones of non specific make, although some are marketed by well known names. Some are included here. https://www.google.com/search?q=memory+saver+car+battery&source=hp&ei=DgS0YJnxG8jQaI3Nu6gE&iflsig=AINFCbYAAAAAYLQSHumsWFV4nTUVUXfHB8Z6It6uiCFN&oq=memory+saver&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAEYADICCAAyAggAMgIIADICCAAyAggAMgIIADICCAAyAggAMgIIADICCAA6CAgAEOoCEI8BOg4ILhCxAxDHARCjAhCTAjoLCC4QsQMQxwEQowI6BQgAELEDOggILhCxAxCDAToFCC4QsQM6CAguEMcBEKMCOggIABCxAxCDAToCCC5QpzRY7Gpgz4ABaAFwAHgAgAFdiAGuBpIBAjEymAEAoAEBqgEHZ3dzLXdperABCQ&sclient=gws-wiz This is like the one I bought with a transparent case which shows the voltage. https://www.wish.com/product/5e1696c4afe01e0439849b0b?hide_login_modal=true&from_ad=goog_shopping&_display_country_code=GB&_force_currency_code=GBP&pid=googleadwords_int&c={campaignId}&ad_cid=5e1696c4afe01e0439849b0b&ad_cc=GB&ad_curr=GBP&ad_price=6.00&campaign_id=6493229882&exclude_install=true}&guest=true&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIionFwbby8AIVaAIGAB3pqgg2EAQYASABEgIpmfD_BwE&share=web On my old BMW I just lose the radio presets so use the disconnect on the negative terminal clamp to help reduce discharge and reset when car is used (which has not been at all during pandemic), but with modern cars more settings, even performance ones can be affected.
