Scanner for Rx450h
Herbie replied to Niyi Olaniyan's topic in RX 300 / RX 350h / RX 400h / RX 200t / RX 450h+ / RX 500h Club
Good point Barry. Being a radio ham, the word 'scanner' in my mind has always been associated with a radio receiver 🙂 If Barry is correct and you mean an OBD2 code reader, then the best to get is one like this or similar. -
New Member saying hello.

Hello and welcome to the club Sandy -
Bored with red so I had it wrapped

Whyever not? They're in business (to make money) and need customers, so if even just one person saw the price and decided to have their's done too, then you've done the business a favour. It's not like Las Palmas was asking you how much you've got in the bank (which is personal and no one's business except your own), he's merely asking what a company charges for a service they offer to the public. EDIT: I've just seen that you have now said what it cost -
Not sure about that Linas. Having parking mode is better than not having it but only marginally so, given that it can only 'see' out of the window it's mounted to. Quite a lot of people still only have one mounted on the front windscreen so yes, it'll see anything that happens at the front but that still leaves 75% of the car unmonitored.

Scanner for Rx450h

Do you mean a radio scanner for listening to things like radio hams, shipping, aircraft etc., etc? If so, any will work. There's nothing special about the RX450h or any hybrid in this context (if that's what you mean), it's just a car like any other. -
The weather hasn't been great so I haven't got my Android Auto unit fitted yet but I didn't know about that so thanks for the info. By pure coincidence, just this very morning, I received an advert from Sygic informing me that 'Android Auto works better with Sygic Premium.' I currently have a lifetime premium licence for Sygic but if I now pay £33.49 for a 'Premium for Android Auto' licence, that will activate voice navigation, speed limits, detailed instructions and lane assistance on Android Auto. Would this be the missing functionality you mention, I wonder?

I know this is an American video but it demonstrates some of the capabilities of the system. I can't get it for my 2018 RX so I've just got a third-party add-in device that does the job but that was £200. For £80 it's an absolute 'no-brainer', just have it done. My favourite navigation is Sygic and that's just been released on the Android Auto platform, which means that for me, it's worth it for just that one app alone.

My guy didn't use a system or 'kit' from one manufacturer, preferring instead to 'mix and match' to create the best possible system for the car. About 17 or 18 years ago (maybe longer) when I first looked into LPG it was a complete minefield. You perhaps found a great installer with a great reputation but then found out that he was only fitting one system, and when asked if they could guarantee that it would work well on my car they couldn't. The other side of the coin was also true in that you may find the perfect system for any given car but the only people fitting it weren't the best and had poor reputations. It took me a good six months of constant looking and researching to find a competent installer who would guarantee the system he was going to fit would be up to the job and then some. He was true to his word and he did a brilliant job and the car performed superbly. I would have used him again but by the time I needed another installation doing, he'd retired. It's about 6 years since I last had a conversion done and we traded that car in 3 years ago so I can't remember what he used on it, but it was like a breath of fresh air to find someone who actually had enough skill and knowledge to make a bespoke system for any given car. I enjoyed running LPG, it had plenty of advantages. However, even though it's technically possible to convert a hybrid I'd never be brave enough to have it done; why add another layer of complexity to something that's already very complex anyway?

I recently bought the Viofo A129 Duo front/rear Full HD set (plus the hardwire kit and the circular polarising filter, about £188 in total) and installed it myself, which took a couple of hours to do. Unsurprisingly, the hardest part of the job was getting the cable from the front cam to the rear cam. I discovered that the supplied cable was just not quite long enough to go at low level (under the scuff plates etc) in my RX450h so I took it along under the head lining. I previously had a Viofo A119S in my previous RX (that I forgot to take out) which was excellent, so I knew that I wouldn't need to look any further than Viofo again when we got this car a few weeks ago.

Just so you know you're not being ignored - as far as I know you've done everything that could work. Time for either a new suction cup or a new camera now, I'd say.

Kumho Tyres
Herbie replied to Phil xxkr's topic in RX 300 / RX 350h / RX 400h / RX 200t / RX 450h+ / RX 500h Club
My 3RX had 19" tyres and I had Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen 2 all round. I don't know if they do a 20" version for the 4RX but if they do, I'll be having them all round again; absolutely superb tyres. -
I enjoy driving, always have done, and you may think it's a little harsh but we've all passed a driving test so I hold no truck with people who say, "The RX is too big and too difficult to park" or something along those lines. Sadly, this man passed away in 2016 but here's someone who I admire a lot He continued to park in the garage until the end of his days when he died at the age of 93. Sorry about the 'bad word' but that's the screen name of whoever posted the video and I don't know how, or if, it could be removed.

When Keith posted this in the Facebook group, I pointed out that it may be worth taking into account what may be the 'other side of the coin', so for completeness, here it is: It may not be that straightforward. Some dashcams are quite big and can't be left in situ overnight for fear of some scrote nicking it. Sod's Law states that the day you forget to put it back in will be the day you have an accident and when they ask for footage you can't supply it. What an ideal opportunity for them to reduce or refuse a payout because you got the insurance on the premise of having a dashcam fitted. I've never told them I have a cam but will provide footage if I ever need to.

Oil maintenance soon required
Herbie replied to Pcoulter's topic in Lexus RC Owners Club / RC 200t / RC 300h Club
If you have a Lexus Extended Warranty then a condition of that is that you must have servicing also carried out at Lexus. If you don't have the extended warranty then you can have it serviced wherever you like. However, if you take this route, I would also highly suggest that you have the annual Hybrid Health Check done as a stand-alone service at Lexus for £59. If it passes, they certify the battery for 1 year or 10k miles and you can do that each year until the car is 15 years old. The HHC is 'thrown in free' as part of the Lexus servicing. -
Sadly, unless he lives very close to work, that was just an out-and-out lie. If you could drive it on battery alone you wouldn't get more than a couple of miles before the traction battery was flat. For the car to work, three things are needed - the 12V battery, the high voltage traction battery and the petrol engine. If any one of those three are 'missing' the car won't work, which is probably why Toyota called the system the Hybrid Synergy Drive. As I said earlier, the 12V battery boots the computers and brings the car into READY mode, at which point you can drive off on battery power only if you want to. When the hybrid system decides it needs the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) to run, it energises Motor/Generator 1 (MG1) and uses it to spin the engine up to 1,000rpm before applying fuel and a spark to fire it - which is why there's no starter motor. Anything that would normally be driven by a belt from the engine, such as power steering pump, aircon compressor etc., etc., is driven electrically instead, because the ICE doesn't run constantly. There's no alternator either, so the 12V battery is charged by means of a DC/DC converter, which is basically a box of electronics that takes the (we'll say) 300V of the traction battery and drops it to approximately 14.5V to run all the 12V systems and keep the battery charged. Other boxes of electronics do the same for other systems. For instance, I think the power steering works on 48V; the aircon compressor is run by a 500V 3-phase AC variable frequency motor and MG1 and MG2 are both 650V permanent magnet motors. Try to never run out of petrol but if you do, you'll need to put in at least 10 litres (better with 15) before attempting to restart. If you unsuccessfully try to restart it more than 3 times, the hybrid system can lock out and you'll need a dealer to get it going. If your aircon ever needs to be regassed, make sure that whoever does it uses ND11 oil (or equivalent) and not the 'normal' PAG oil. The refrigerant gas is the same as a conventional car, but the windings of the aircon compressor motor are immersed in the oil for cooling purposes and ND11 does not conduct electricity. Hope that helps

There seems to be a bit of confusion here Paul. The battery that drives the car is the traction (hybrid) battery and, depending on the model of car, can be anything from about 200V to 300V. It would be extremely unusual for that battery to need replacing, especially on a 2017 car, so I'm assuming you're talking about the 12V battery when you say it was replaced 6 months ago? Hybrids don't have a traditional starter motor (or alternator either) and all the 12V battery does is to boot the computers and get the hybrid system into READY mode, along with a couple of other things. Because this doesn't take a lot of power (about 20A instead of the 300A or more that a conventional starter motor needs to crank the engine) Lexus only fit small capacity 12V batteries, which is why it goes flat quite quickly if the car isn't used regularly.

Usually it's just that the power cable for the camera is running close to the aerial lead and most often can be easily sorted by using a cylindrical ferrite bead at one or both ends of the camera cable like in the photo below. I don't know what this one was used for but normally just one or two turns is enough - using more can even make the problem worse.
