  1. What's ruining the planet most is overpopulation; too many people for too few resources. A friend of mine is proud that she has 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. I don't think that it's anything to be proud of at all. We can't just keep squirting sprogs out at the current rate of knots.
  2. They should be stored as historic codes if you're curious.
  3. Have a look at my thread here. At this point, I was very hopeful but I have to say that I'm disappointed with it. I'll try to find the post where I detail why I'm disappointed so keep watching this thread of yours BUT, having said that I made a discovery just yesterday that MAY make things better - I'll elaborate on that when I have more time and done some more experimentation.
  4. That's because that type of car and the engine in it are made to handle that type of fuel. It would make no difference in something like a Nissan Micra or a 1.1-litre Fiesta.
  5. If you want to keep the manufacturer warranty I would imagine that you'll have to stick to the manufacturer service schedule.
  6. If the car isn't used regularly for decent runs the 12V battery will soon go flat and if it goes too low for too long then it goes to battery heaven. Hybrids don't have starter motors* (or alternators) so instead of the battery needing to supply 300A or more to crank the engine, all it has to do is to boot the computers to get the hybrid system into READY mode and a couple of other things, which is a process that takes about 20A instead of about 300A. This was probably one of the factors that led Toyota/Lexus to only specify small capacity 12V batteries of maybe 45Ah instead of the 75Ah and above that you'd normally see. *When the hybrid system wants to run the petrol engine it energises MG1 to spin the engine up to 1,000rpm before applying fuel and a spark to ignite it.
  7. Well done Piers, glad you're all sorted. Fingers crossed for a good result 🤞
  8. Colin summed up Android Auto/Apple CarPlay quite well above but just to add to that: Although my AA device isn't working well, one aspect of it that does is voice commands using the Google Assistant. All I need to do is to say "Hey Google" and it's in listening mode. "Open Waze" and it does. "Navigate to number 4 Dunstal Field Cottenham" and it just simply sets up the route and then I have the choice of using or avoiding motorways and all the usual stuff. No dramas, no stress, it just does it and I can be off driving before I would have finished inputting the address into the Lexus system. Unfortunately for me, the problem is that Waze then freezes within a couple of miles but I know that's down to the particular unit I have, along with other problems. If I can ever get it working properly it'll be excellent. Google Assistant is worlds apart from the Lexus voice commands. Last time I tried Lexus I said, "Call Pete Fairclough" and it replied, "Dialling 493. If this is correct blah blah." What??? With GA, "Call Pete Fairclough" > "Calling Pete Fairclough" and again, no stress or drama. AA/CP can also do Spotify, Amazon Music and so on, but also Internet Radio with thousands and thousands of stations. As we've toured around Poland, Czechia and other places we've discovered various excellent stations and it's great to get them in the car here, although this does use mobile data of course.
  9. Well I'll go t'foot of our stairs as me Granny used to say. I had no idea!
  10. DOH!!! Cheers Mike - although I still don't like the Lexus nav
  11. Very nice Paul, love the colour. My nephew lives in Market Deeping so next time we visit the area I'll keep an eye out for the beast
  12. Just to throw in my two-pence worth, I think the Lexus nav is atrocious. My car is just three years old but the navigation is so clunky and counterintuitive and slow, which is why I'm desperate to get my Android Auto device working properly. Until then, I'll have to use my phone but can anyone shed any light on the problem in the video? I hate talking in videos so please excuse the stilted commentary. EDIT: I don't usually perform SO badly with the joystick but trying to hold the phone steady and operate the joystick at the same time was obviously beyond me
  13. Not wanting to cause an argument but if I remember correctly my insurance has both a voluntary and also a compulsory excess, the sum of which will add up to about £500, plus the increase in premiums ad infinitum. Speaking completely hypothetically (because I've never researched it so I don't know if this would work or not) a very cursory look on the Bay of Fleas shows that I can get a cheapo Magnaflow 400 Zeller Ceramic core replacement for around £180. So for me (at least hypothetically) that's what I'd do, or have a straight pipe welded in and bother about the legalities later. Exactly! It seems to be rocketing skyward faster than Jeff Besos!
  14. If you have another 12V source (such as a jump start battery pack or jump leads with a second car to provide 12V) then just connect these leads to the cables or clamps before lifting them off the old battery. This will keep a 12V supply to the car so that no settings will be lost.
  15. That's very true. And quite often the 'lookout' guy has some form of weapon, often a 2ft long machete, so I wouldn't be tangling with him!
  16. Well, I am who I am and at 63 years old I'm probably beyond changing, so you can either read or not read my posts, I really don't care one way or the other
  17. No, not at all. I used to be mildly apprehensive about trolley dings and it wasn't any hardship to walk that little bit further if I parked out of the way, but I never 'worried' about it to the extent that I'd think of selling the car. It's not a concern anyway, that's my whole point. If the thieves want it, they will take it, no matter how much or how little you worry about it and no matter what make and model of car it is. If my cat gets nicked tonight I'll be more than a bit p****d off but tomorrow morning I'll make an appointment to have a straight pipe welded on or I'll get a cheapo aftermarket cat. The one thing I won't do is lose any sleep over it, or sell the car because of it. By the way, to be blasé is to be unimpressed with or indifferent to something because one has experienced or seen it so often before. I'm definitely not blasé, just realistic. There is absolutely nothing that can be done to stop the theft of cats. All a catlock does is to slow them down slightly but it won't stop or deter them, so we are left with two choices: Don't worry about it, just get on with your life Sell the car I love my car and I ain't selling it for anyone or anything, so acceptance is my chosen path.
  18. If it's the one that Linas found then I'd say that the "box" is more of a window, so it may be a main isolator for the power windows.
  19. If someone is a natural worrier as you seem to be, nothing we say will change your mind so perhaps you would be better off selling it and going for something more mundane. However, all cars have cats so all cars are potential targets, it's just that the thieves haven't worked that out yet. Parking at Asda to do the shopping I always used to park well away from others to avoid trolley dings and such. Now, parking away from others opens up more opportunity for cat theft, so do I stop going to Asda? Of course not. We only have the one car and that does everything from taking us on driving holidays around Poland/Czechia/Slovakia etc., to doing tip runs with bags of rubbish in the back. We still need our shopping, so now at Asda I just park in 'a space' and whatever will be, will be. When we go to Poland or Czechia or wherever, I certainly won't be worrying about where I've parked the car, I'll be enjoying a beer somewhere. Worrying about what might happen in the future simply stops you from enjoying the present.
  20. This happens quite a lot with metal caps so don't be too hard on the builder I know that the programming can be done with Techstream and plenty videos on how to do it can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=lexus+tpms+programming
  21. It was a while ago now Mark but until I got my first hybrid about 3 or 4 years ago, all the cars we'd had for the previous 15, maybe 17 years had all been converted for LPG and no problems at all with valve seat regression or anything else for that matter. LPG is better for the engine, better for the environment and definitely far better on the wallet and I would have it on this car now but I'm not brave enough. A hybrid can be converted but they are already extremely complex cars and I'm not brave enough to add another layer of complexity into the mix.
  22. It has 4 wheels and they're all driven so does All Wheel Drive and 4 Wheel Drive not mean the same thing?
  23. I've never had a 400h but if the driver's mirror does dip then I would be extremely surprised if the passenger side didn't have the facility to do so as well. I'm sure that either within this forum or on YouTube, you'll find an instructional video on how to take the mirror apart and fix the problem.
  24. I suppose it's more the outcome and results of the scan that's worrying you Piers and if that's the case then I'm afraid that there's not much I can say other than good luck and we'll all be rooting for you. However, I know that a lot of people are apprehensive about the machine itself and the noise it makes. My mother in law had one scan and hated it so much that she swore she'd never have another one, whereas I've had three and it doesn't bother me at all. It does make some loud and strange noises and for those who have a tendency towards feeling claustrophobic, the confined space along with this noise can certainly cause anxiety, but you can choose to have music playing if you want to and they also give you a panic button in case it gets too much. I'm an avid music lover but I didn't bother with it during the scan because I also love (real) technology as well as sci-fi stuff, so as the scanner was banging, bleeping and squeaking, firstly I was thinking about what it was actually doing in reality and then my mind wandered to the point where I was in a starfighter, battling to save Planet Earth from an alien invasion As in most walks of life, knowledge is power, so have a look here at how the machines work and what the noises are. The scans I've had in the past have all been to do with my back injury but, like David above, I also had a triple bypass in August 2014 and the staff were brilliant. I have no doubt whatsoever that they will look after you and make you feel at ease. Good luck my friend, hope it all goes well.
