LS430 (facelift) 05 LPG Conversion Worth it?
Herbie replied to TKhan430's topic in Lexus General Maintenance
As far as I'm concerned anything that uses petrol when it should be on gas is defeating the object. For instance, there are some systems out there that will switch back to petrol on heavy load, which is rubbish. Having a fully-loaded car going uphill with a wide open throttle is just when you need it to be drinking cheap gas rather than expensive petrol and just smacks of installer incompetence in not using the correct components for the installation. It's still a bit of a minefield when you have three things to come together - you need someone who can suggest the best system* for the car and who is qualified to fit that system and will also do a very neat, good installation. I've come across installers who are meticulous in their work but they've only been qualified to fit one or two systems and they couldn't guarantee that they were the best systems for the car and that they would not switch back to petrol under heavy acceleration and loading. *The bloke who did my conversions really understands the science and doesn't fit any particular system from any particular manufacturer (which is really just a kit of parts) unless he thinks that would be the best solution in any given case. What he tends to do is to see what the car needs and then he 'mixes and matches' the best components from any manufacturer to get the best results. As an example, he may decide to use an OMVL reducer with Magic injectors and a NEVO gas ECU and a Prins this and a Romano that, and so on. We've had conversions done on an RX300, a Nissan Maxima QX SE Plus, a Nissan Maxima, I think we had a Rover 800 Sterling done and something else too far back to remember. I'm no scientist so I don't know why LPG is better for the engine, only that it is. Engine oil comes out almost the same colour as it went in 10k miles before so it's much cleaner. I would think LPG will be around for a fair while yet, although maybe petrol forecourts may diminish. Our local Calor Centre has a pump, as does our local Premier Gas place. -
LS430 (facelift) 05 LPG Conversion Worth it?
Herbie replied to TKhan430's topic in Lexus General Maintenance
1. I remember someone on here converted his own LS430 (think his name is Hyland?) because he used to work as an installer, so yes, it can be done. 2. Petrol on the valves instead of FlashLube? Never heard of that one, sorry. All my cars used FlashLube 3. I don't know the cost of a conversion these days but the last car we had converted was our RX300 and was £1,300 a few years ago. Only you will know how much mileage you do and how long your pay-back or break-even point will be. I can say that LPG is better for the environment, better for the engine, and far better for the wallet. 4. Never had air suspension but I very much doubt it would cause a problem. 5. Never had an LS430 but had 5 or 6 cars converted over the years and loved it. The car ECU sends out signals to the petrol injectors as normal but those signals are intercepted and sent to the gas ECU and on to the gas injectors instead. It works brilliantly and if I didn't have a hybrid I would have LPG again in a heartbeat. Although it is possible to convert hybrids, I'm just not brave enough. Hybrids are very complex anyway and I don't want to add yet another layer of complexity. -
12volt Battery ordered

I may be wrong but I would imagine that the HUD would only activate with the car in READY mode and if that's correct then it would be reading the output voltage of the DC/DC converter, which is the hybrid equivalent of the alternator (approx. 14.5V) and not true battery voltage. -
If you look at the PDF file below, the Viofo cameras I've got have two or three parking modes and they were only half the price of either the Nextbase or the Blackview sets A129 Duo Manual.pdf

Rx450h manual

I know what you're saying Len but it's just simply not 'environmentally friendly' to print 6, 7, or even 800 pages to stick in the glove box these days. And let's face it, 90% or more of what's in there is either just commonsense or you already have the knowledge from previous cars and/or years of motoring. Even if you don't have the knowledge, just poke a switch and see what happens If you really need something in the glove box then an old mobile phone or tablet with the pdf file downloaded onto it eliminates the need for Internet access or phone signal and is just as convenient as a paper book. -
I would be extremely surprised if they didn't fold. Either look at the icons on the buttons or as a last resort, read the manual If you didn't get a paper manual you can download a PDF one from https://www.lexus.co.uk/owners/about-my-lexus/manuals/

Nail, head. Super-duper, all singing, all dancing petrol for an engine that is tuned to use it is great. However, put it in a standard engine and it's all psychological snake oil.

I seem to have lost my Gold Member status, even though my PayPal account shows an automatic payment being made to you on 2nd August. Can you sort it please folks? Cheers.

Just to add to what Len said above, only use 'Endurance' type SD cards as these are specifically manufactured to cope with the constant writing/rewriting. Personally I only use Samsung Endurance Pro - they have excellent reviews, they're robust, have a very low failure rate and are amongst the best, if not the best cards out there. I usually buy them from here but it seems they're out of stock of the 128GB ones.

Selling hybrids due to cat-theft risk?
Herbie replied to MadJam250's topic in Lexus General Discussions
You'd think so wouldn't you, but no, they don't care. The whole job, from pulling up in their car to driving away again is about 90 seconds to 2 minutes tops. Plus, the 'lookout guy' is usually armed with a machete or some other weapon, so they aren't the slightest bit worried. -
If it's the kind of protection where some guy comes out to repair supermarket trolley dings and suchlike then you can get it half price elsewhere. If it's a whole-car ceramic coating type of thing, go to a proper car detailer for a much better job at a much better price. Enjoy your new beastie and let's see photos when you get it

In case anyone is interested, this is my camera setup. It's a Viofo A129 Duo with parking mode, currently £154.70 from Amazon on that link. The front camera was very easy to fit although I would have ideally liked to position it nearer the roof lining. Unfortunately, any brand of camera would be the same due to the dots of the rain sensor. The lens needs to be clear of the dots so if I went further up the camera would be too far to the left. The rear camera was a bit challenging, especially getting the cable through the flexible rubber tubes from the body into the tailgate, but nothing too difficult.
-
You are, of course, quite correct Len and my own dashcam setup, a Viofo A129 Duo, (£154.70 for the front/rear set) has 'parking mode' as well, along with voltage sensing so that it doesn't flatten the 12V battery. This kind of setup necessitates a second power feed, so the camera has an ignition-switched supply for normal driving mode (on/off with the ignition) and also a permanent live feed for when the car is off and the camera is in parking mode. I didn't mention this above because (a) not all cameras have a parking mode and (b) I was just trying to keep the explanation simple.

12volt Battery ordered

To be honest it could even be done with a pack of 8 AA batteries because current draw will be almost minimal as long as you turn things like the interior lights off, the radio off and don't attempt to use anything like power back doors etc. As I explained in the topic Barry linked to above, the radio, the clock, the window controller and suchlike all have a small chip in them that stores the respective settings as long as there is a power supply. If that supply gets interrupted then the chip is erased and the settings are lost. So, all you're doing is keeping the power supply to the chips on, and that doesn't take much power at all. -

If you have another 12V source (such as another car and jump leads) simply connect it to the cables before you disconnect them from the battery so that no settings are lost. -
I don't think they fit cig lighters these days but rather just fit 12V power outlets and usually in the centre console. However, the fuse box is usually somewhere up near or behind the glove box and the way I've always done it is to pull the fuse for the cig lighter/power outlet and use a piggyback 'add-a-fuse' like the one below, on that circuit. Of course, you'll have to make sure to get the correct size of blade. The RX uses micro blade fuses but I don't know what your new ES will use. EDIT: - forgot to say that if you use one of these then the fuse box lid will probably not fit back on so just keep it in the glove box so that you have it handy to refer to if you ever need to replace any of the fuses.

Without being nasty, and I promise you I really don't mean to cause any offence, but let me put it this way - you don't need to know what it is because if you have to ask, then it's obvious you have neither the knowledge, the skills, nor the tools to do the job yourself, so either take it back to the dealer and get them to put it right or take it to an aircon specialist and get them to do the work.

Looking at MOT history there's a jump from 2010 to 2020 and only about 4,000 miles covered during that time but no MOTs? How does that work? I know there's an old saying "God loves a tryer" but given all the fauts and help he's been asking about in here, trying to sell it in here is probably a non-starter
-
Well, it's fairly self-explanatory really. There's a motorised flap that directs the flow of air into the cabin and it sounds like it's possibly got stuck in a position that allows more air to be directed to the passenger side. That's really about the limit of my knowledge in this area.
