  1. You have my sympathy.
  2. Get rid of the run-flats and buy some ordinary tyres. I felt exactly as you when I got mine but much better now.
  3. This is where we get to when those in power get high wages then massive pensions after a brief period in post. Complete loss of empathy for the less well-off as they have no understanding how 'real' people live and the price of anything is of no concern as there is always money in the pot. Strangely I thought the Tories were the evil doers that hated the lower classes but oh, how the tables have turned.
  4. It was mentioned on GMB this morning before they interviewed the Minister for Defense, (Healey I think), plus 'others' they added! Today in various News reports it states that the Labour Party intend to give Council's the power to ignore the compulsory 25% discount for single home occupancy that will affect mainly pensioners, the removal of Discounted Railcards for the elderly, service personnel and the disabled and a move to increase the pension age at a faster rate than already stated. All this must show that this government had decided that pensioners are a worthless drag on society and should be punished for leading the country to this point of supposed near bankruptcy (even though the Cabinet are the only group that actually think the UK economy is currently 'bad')! If this shower stay in for 5 years then there is every chance that some of us on here may be in this group without having an actual Lexus to our name as they will soon be saying that Pensioners should not be allowed to drive or even be seen in public! Remember my words - NI on pension payments is just around the corner, NI discount for those workers over pension age will be curtailed and ISA allowance will, at best, never be increased and at worst phased-out.
  5. Sorry, I did recognise the attempt at humour but thought you also queried my comment. I'm afraid local, short journeys always erodes mpg. Realistically I should buy an electric vehicle since retiring but just can't bring myself to do it. We like to go to Cornwall most years and don't relish two charging stops on top of a five hour drive.
  6. Partly uphill yes but obviously not both ways. Short journeys, cold engine = low mpg.
  7. Very interesting article and quite true. Of course having the World Renowned BBC on Labour's side did them no harm during the election but we'll see how long that lasts when discussions about Licence Fees kick-off.
  8. You need my wife to look over a new purchase, she spots paint chips the size of a fly's eye! I get away with zilch by-the-way.
  9. First read 'orgasms' and briefly looked forward to the cold weather!
  10. Talk of 5p per litre fuel tax boost now. Another blow for the motorist's to suffer. Maybe they want to keep pensioners trapped inside their cold homes this winter!
  11. Just do the under two miles 'school run' a few times a week and watch the mpg suffer!
  12. I believe she was learning to drive in a nice new Camper Van! 😉
  13. It's a very interesting thread isn't it! With regards to the USA/UK election system - I have no preference other than the US one is far too long. Content wise then there is no difference as ALL POLITICIANS LIE! Whether they lie to your face or, most usually, through some deceptive method like blaming the 'others' for forcing a punitive change to policy, they all do it. They can't blame themselves can they? The Labour party, for a long time, managed to hide their intents by saying nothing and only ever opposing government moves by just being Johnny Opposites. Now they are in 'power' they can't use this ploy and must actually take actions. This is where it all goes wrong. We all know that all governments will let us down at some time, the trick is to decide which will disappoint us the least and vote for them.
  14. I hate to disappoint Don. I've been using supermarket fuel for years, though not 400. Never had an issue. I once did a two month test putting the more expensive version in the NX and didn't see any mpg improvement. I didn't do it to improve the running as there wasn't a problem to cure. I'm not disagreeing but just relaying my own experience. A service engineer once told me that modern engines have some self adjustment and the worst thing is to keep swapping and changing fuel grades. Not sure that's true but seems to work for me.
  15. I haven't actually had my first state pension payment but The Revenue emailed today to say my tax code has altered due to its imminent arrival! Funny how quick the system works when it's taking money in isn't it!
  16. Not if you want to hide your diet busting treat from the other half. But now I can!
  17. Why did no one tell me that the 'divider' in the glove-box is easily removable (to get to the fuse box I think)? I keep the books in the boot side pocket and now have a usable glove box! Winner!
  18. Not the dreaded electric car noise is it? Even my daughter's yappy dog doesn't bark now as it hears me a quarter of a mile away and recognises the sound effect from UFO the 70's sci-fi series!
  19. First They Came by Pastor Martin Niemöller First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me Need I say more?
  20. Yes, you can count on that!
  21. Linas, your response is completely in line with your other posts/opinions imho. I've butted heads with you before as apparently you think the UX isn't a Lexus at all! Enough said and I await the 'broadside'. Thing is one has to listen and sometimes accept there may be another valid side when in open discussion. £1000 is not much. Maybe if all oaps lived in their own paid-for house that was well insulated and 'cheap' to run then they can scrape by but it would be more akin to surviving than thriving. The 'Living Wage' is set at £11.44 per hour and this is the level that various Quangos and Government bodies have identified as the minimum a person requires to live in the UK, not a family or a couple but a singleton. For a 37 hour week (we oldies actually worked far longer but I appreciate that the younger folk have far more stuff to do in their leisure time) x 52 weeks the total wage would be £22,010 if, (big if), the wage earner lost 25% of that wage to stoppages then the take home would be £16500.00 pa. At that level of income a family would probably be considered favorably for assistance whereas a retired person on the full state pension plus a miserly private pension will not qualify for Pension Credits - and please do not say that the state pension isn't taxed, it is as it added in to one's total income. At least 8 million of the 10 Million on pensions will not qualify for benefits and all those are not living the life of riley I assure you. Just to clarify. I retired a year early and have lived on my savings and private pensions. I, like many, many, have never claimed one single cent of state aid during my 66 years and could have been considered a fairly well paid individual but not highly paid during my 50 years of work having left school at 15. I am nothing special. There will be millions of older people who will tell you the same story, some will have earned less, some will have earned more but on average we will be very similar. We have lived through 3 day weeks, union led strikes that emptied shops and times when power was cut for several days at a time. We have seen our Country become a laughing stock, a financial basket case, an industrial war zone and have endured politically more than the current generations could imagine - I hope. No one is saying that immigration is always bad but uncontrolled it will ultimately ruin every society that follows that path - history tells us this. Thanks for reading.
  22. Just be very gentle when accelerating. They're not sports cars and the CVT can sound awful when pushed. At higher speeds they're extremely smooth but getting there needs to be achieved gently. Your mpg will thank you too.
  23. First thing I did was turn off Lane Assist as that gave me a wobbly feeling. More steering than seat though. Is the seat loose perhaps?
  24. Is it just our cars or has a type of spider adapted/evolved to exist in our wing/side mirrors? Both my car, my wife's and Daughter's car have resident spiders that web-up every night! I'll try to photograph one tomorrow, maybe they will all look the same nationwide!
  25. I'm not sure how this thread passed me by but I clearly have a lot of reading to catch-up. In my defence I state that my letter complaining about this situation was published in the Daily Mail! I am no longer a Mail letters virgin, quite a refreshing feeling. Like others have mentioned and as I too enter my 'Old-age pensioner' phase this month, I can manage without the paltry £100.00 WFA but it's all about principles to me. We are one of the lowest paid state pension groups in the G7. At around £1000 a month most, not all but most, people would not manage to carry on their lives as if they were still at work and within reason I would say that is a fair aim. I can partly balance the equation by saying that whilst the payment may be low there are other 'benefits' that help. Medical and Prescriptions, Bus Passes, Age Discounts etc. etc. However, in my time I have seen most of these 'extra's' moved - along with the Pension age and see no reason why this vindictive Socialist Government will not feel that these are 'Easy Targets'. I also predict that there will be NI payments applied to our pension payments soon and we will hear the weasel words - "These are needed to fund elderly care" or some such. Read that as "So we can pay Public Employees and ourselves more"! Secondly, Immigration. I know that the majority of people on this site will not be racists but as we are probably older and more experienced we are possibly more confident to have an opinion contrary to the 'Woke' that all must be accepted. Stating that Immigration must be controlled is not being racist but it is being practical. If the economy is so bad that it cannot afford to give long contributing pensioners a small payment to keep warm then how can we fund tens-of- thousands, (possibly millions), of the world's transitory peoples? Fact is, we can't. We should all be writing to this Government asking for evidence of the 'plan' they said was ready to go! We all know what that means. I am not saying that we should riot as we have seen recently but I do feel that if a few million of us walk (slowly) through the major cities then maybe the 'Grey Vote' will start to count again. Thanks for reading, or not. It's a free country - apparently!
