White residue suggests that may be from what she scraped it on. A good go with T cut may well clean it off. A trip to an independent body shop for a quick machine polish may sort it out for ' a drink '!!

Small, low tax rate and low fuel consumption cars are increasing in value, and will hold their value. 5 years ago during a sale at a Toyota dealer up north, my wife bought a 4 year old 63 reg Aygo for £3780. With an extra 6000 miles on it, WBAC will now pay £4000 for it, and it will retail at £4995. Look on Autotrader. High tax rate cars that return less than 25 mpg are going to drop in value. Try being a Taxi driver! Many punctured and written off tyres caused by screws, nails and glass. Certain estates in my town always needed extra care , especially when turning round. Many bits left about from dismantled cars and fly tipping! The dreaded tick tick noise as the wheels went round, resulting in putting the car in neutral and pushing it whilst looking for the culprit. I even carried large self tappers to plug a hole to get me to a repair place! Memorable one was a double, caused by running over a bottle. Had to get a mate to pop to my house to pick up another wheel from my garage at 3.00 in the morning!

Always have 2 keys in the car when on holiday. Spare one is turned off and in a faraday pouch in the wife's bag. Never a problem. At the destination we leave it at the accommodation in case her bag is stolen. Only ever had one problem, and that was in a 1996 Mercedes C180. We were attempting to board a ferry to Jersey and the car refused to start. Until my wife moved her bag. She'd been leaning on it compressing the buttons whilst I was trying to start with my key.

May sound daft, but make sure the dipstick is clean! Polish or wax residue from an old rag can transfer to the stick. Clean the stick with thinners or grease remover, dip it, and then use a clean rag or tissue.

Yes, unlucky. As an aside, I will never buy Bridgestone tyres again. I've had to replace 2 sets of tyres because they had cracks between the treads. Both sets at between 5 and 6 mm and not old, going by the sidewall codes. Always at the correct pressures and not abused.

Two doors away from me lives a time served mechanic, now working from home for friends. He's retired and in his mind seventies. My daughter needed her 2010 Avensis servicing. He went through the whole car, front to back. Changed oil and filter, air and pollen filters, front and rear pads (discs were ok), refitted some missing screws from the undertray, and a new number plate bulb. Topped up all fluids. Total cost, £242.73 inclusive of parts and labour. Proper old school chap.

Well that's a bit of a mystery. I once had similar, and it turned out to be a pin prick size hole in a hose, and only leaked out when hot and under pressure. Only other thing could be the heater matrix. Any damp carpets?

I wash my car weekly, and once a month finish off with my power washer on a low setting. It's amazing how much dirt comes out of crevices.

Having owned an ISF, I know how good these cars are. But I feel that present offerings are overpriced, and with the current problems, they are going to be hard to sell. Inflation, the possibility of fuel reaching £2 per gallon, and VED at roughly £50 per month may make people gulp at the prospect. Most will not qualify for extended warranty either. If not going to be driven daily, and you don't need 4 seats, my money would be going towards an Aston Martin Vantage.....
