Thanks for that. Pads should be OK. The car is just under 4 years old and only done 25k miles. No dash lights either. He also turned 80 in January and doesn't exactly drive on the edge. He's going to get them checked at a local garage this week but when he mentioned it and then I had a look I couldn't help thinking about this thread. I don't suppose getting up to speed and slamming the anchors on a few times would do anything?

Reviving this one. My dad's XC60 has started groaning from the OSR and a quick look shows the pad isn't in contact with all of the disc when braking. Could this be related to the topic discussed here?

Not much to gain on these N/A engines I'm afraid. I dropped a K&N filter in which was nice and cheap + gives you that "I've done my first mod" feeling. Makes no real world difference though. (If you do this check it after a day or two. Because the filter is vertical heat from the engine can make a drop or two of oil collect in the bottom of the housing) I haven't really done much else apart from the odd bulb/LED and a period head unit. On a previous car I had some cheap sensors fitted cheaply. They beeped when it was raining I'd be tempted to ask around and get quality non-OEM fitted by a decent local car audio place. The sort of place that fit high end audio for young men with disposable income. I don't think I'd use someone who comes to you and tries to take your bumper off on the drive. I'd also ring a dealer somewhere away from MK and ask for another quote to see if they are taking the mickey. Different car but Lexus Sheffield quoted me £300 fitted for genuine Lexus sensors on my 1st gen IS. :edit: Just read this. Top of page 2. I interpreted it that way too. I've tried a few times to touch up a nice scratch someone left down the osr door rubbing/bump strip but it flakes off every time. Possibly due to it being plastic? Anyway, apparently you can buy them pre-done but £££ so I find a black Sharpie does the job

They are. And though they appear to be well made they're well made in terms of quality material, fit and finish rather than able to drive to the moon and back with little complaint. Active safety measures rather than steel girder solidity seems to be the order of the day too. An interesting statistic I came across last week was that nobody has ever died in an XC90 in the UK since the model was introduced in 2002.
