  1. It's probably more about managing expectations. So long as they're not approaching the minimum I'd guess you'll stay out of trouble so long as you're careful. Which you'd probably do with all seasons anyway. When I first got my WR3 SUVs I went out into Derbyshire and tried to get the car stuck, I didn't try anything daft like that the following year. But I knew I'd be OK getting about round Sheffield if it did come down.
  2. Never! It's not that kind of forum.
  3. Really came down last night and I left it faced uphill. Dry as a bone I've found the noise too. It's coming from the trim around the tailgate lift, the same area the water was making an appearance. Armed with felt pads and spray grease I'll sort that one this afternoon...
  4. I'm not in the game of starting arguments Martin. The 800 is a credit to you My dad got a Sherpa for his business. You could watch it rusting. And he had a couple of Bedfords CFs too. The floor around the pedals rotted away so you could see the road below you. These weren't old vans either, bought new or nearly new. Then he got a Sprinter and never looked back.
  5. Bit of an update. Sealed around the roof bar foot, seam pointed out by Jay (and Lexus bulletins!), tailgate strut, rear bumper fixings and rear lamps. Took it for a wash and so far no leaks. It's raining atm and I've left it facing uphill so we'll see what happens tomorrow. Close run thing. Nearly fell out with it!
  6. Are we talking about the same BL/Austin Rover Montego and Maestro? I must be thinking of some other dreadful British cars of the era! And I know you can't compare the Montego and Maestro to the LS but how about the Rover 800? Not quite the same segment and I know it's an "ironic" used car favourite at the moment (if you can find one that's not dust) but that was ******* too. Or a Jag, bit more of a direct comparison but again deeply flawed and shockingly unreliable. With respect Martin please don't try and tell me that British cars of that and previous eras weren't that bad after all. The UK started making half decent cars again when foreign firms took over. Simple as.
  7. I do recall snide comments at the time about it being an S Class clone that could never hope to compete. Even now I assume a period S Class still commands decent money but I know which one I'd pick if I didn't fancy putting my hand in my pocket every few months.
  8. Well there's still more bits off the car than on it at the moment! Roof bar is off and new seals have been ordered. Mastic will go on those too Black mastic is out and I've done all around the seam mentioned by Jay, removed the tailgate strut, sealed the foot and refitted (not easy on your own!) Sealed around the seam just above the strut foot Left the rear lights out for now but I'll probably just pop them back on because I'm not convinced they're leaking. Maybe a squirt of something that's not sealant to be sure Ordered two new stoppers for the rear bumper fixings on the bottom of the tailgate opening That last one I'm interested in. The stoppers have a rubber washer on them and both had perished. Their position also matches the run marks on the inside of the rear bulkhead. Convinced now that I'm dealing with two quite separate leaks. Bit of a bonus. Realised the driver's side sunroof drain was blocked so sorted that too.
  9. Michelin Cross Climates seem to be a favourite at the moment. And I had good experiences with the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Seasons on an XC90. The Pirellis can be had for about £130 a corner on a 235/55 R18 which I assume your 400H is.
  10. Thanks. I looked at removing the bars all together at one point so I'm sure I've got instructions somewhere.
  11. ...where it won't spend any time at all but will, in all likelihood, be troubled with electrical gremlins, shoddy build quality and ***** poor residuals. Nice plastics do not a quality car make.
  12. I don't get to update on this thread anymore because my dad's driving it So best I can do is say that today I probably whittled about where he's parked it or if he's managed to avoid kerbing it
  13. Great minds and all that I don't think mine is suspension related but I'll check that out.
  14. This post couldn't have come at a better time! Absolutely gushed in this morning. Damp patches on the trim and everything. Pretty sure it's related to the roof bar foot or that area as you found. In fact I've noticed it runs out of the fitting for the power boot close thing. I'm parking facing downhill to stop it being quite as bad. Weird how this has only just started. Used the roof bars for a pretty big roof box over the summer, I wonder if this is related? I've had everything out of the boot but it wasn't practical running the car over the weekend like this so I put everything back. I know I'll have to mop up again and again like you I think some of that dampness is unrelated to the roof. Had the lamps off and everything seemed OK, the seals were dry. So my money's on the two screws either side of the rear bumper just above the plastic protector with the Lexus logo on it. Great post. Thank you.
  15. Thanks for the tip but no not really. Tbh I haven't tracked down the source of the original leak at all and the car's still in bits!
  16. Hi Keith. Welcome to the forum. 1) I got the latest maps from eBay. Well, latest up to a few months ago. Doesn't make up for the system being quite dated though. 2) I think you're right with that one. 3) I connect my FM adapter into the ciggie lighter socket.
  17. Great video here for how to remove the boot floor to access any dampness Mine wasn't too wet but I'm going to leave everything out for now.
  18. Agreed. A Maxi would get my vote.
  19. Haven't even clicked on the link but from one of the most reliable brands to one of the least? Nope. Have to admit I have a soft spot for the convertible though. Anyone who has the balls to drive around in one of those gets my utmost respect
  20. Dismantled the trim around the boot floor and there was a little more water than I'm comfortable with on a 12 year old car but nothing too terrifying. I've left the two side bins out so I can keep an eye on it and also because I really don't fancy struggling to get them back in again May need some advice on that one... No closer to knowing how the water is getting in though.
  21. Hi Stuart. Thanks for the reply. #2 sound interesting. This might explain the tapping from the rear quarter. I have experience of broken welds on a BMW and the sound is similar. Like popping the side of a Coke can. I'll have another shufty at the rubber seals too but they looked OK to me. Prior to purchasing earlier this year I did inspect the boot floor after the worrying stories on here and there was nothing amiss. I'll have another look. Also it was throwing it down last night so I'm going to get it inside and see if the marks have returned.
  22. Noticed these water marks and a run yesterday. Obviously recent as a paper towel soaked some of it up. Any ideas? I think due to the location I'm leaning toward the roof bar foot. Any thoughts on this? I can't see how eg rain water could get past the tailgate seal. I did use the rear washer the other day (something I do very rarely) but where I think the washer hose comes through to the tailgate just doesn't fit with where the damp marks are. And I suppose I could exclude that altogether with the use of a hosepipe. I gave the trim a clean up and the marks haven't returned. Coincidentally, I found the marks investigating a gentle knocking I get from the n/s rear. No idea what's causing that but I'm wondering if it's connected.
  23. We picked up this a couple of months ago. With the 240PS Auto petrol it's rather nice, if not a little thirsty. But a price worth paying to avoid diesel imo. We have a 10yo, 7yo and 5yo plus all the usual football, Scouts, camps etc with friends and it's a decent fit though you do need to slide that middle row if you want to put the bigger ones in the back. I found the 2 Series, Tiguan and Touran all to be noticeably smaller.
  24. Guessing your budget based on your posts, I've heard the new Discovery is one of the best/most spacious 7 seaters around. But if you want to take practicality over prestige then it's the Galaxy. I wonder how much of that is down to wheels and low profile tyres? Lexus do seem to like their mahoosive wheels at the moment.
