LS430 ULEZ Exempt
rich1068 replied to Abid221's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
I suppose the wider issue is that when London starts others follow. Aren't Bristol in the process of starting something similar? -

But my little '99 Saab isn't. Good job I have absolutely no intention of taking it to that London. To see the Queen. -
LS430 ULEZ Exempt

Aren't imports always £265? Something like that I'm sure. I know that when I browse 8s and 6s and look at post-06 cars that would be normally be £550+ the Jap imports are £265 eg post-06 XC90 with the Yamaha V8. Some people are idiots. My dad once had someone having a go about the number of vehicles he had. My dad replied "But I don't drive them all at once". -
That's interesting. And going back to what the transmission guy told me, some of these cars have fallen into the seriously affordable bracket. Who's to say it's not well intentioned 3rd or 4th owners disturbing the "muck" in their 15+ year old pride and joy? That said, while looking into this over on Club Lexus I came across a guy who changed the transmission oil every time he changed the engine oil!
-
So I called in to see my friendly parts manager today, intent on purchasing a job lot of transmission oil. Forty something quid for 10 litres isn't a lot but left empty handed because he more or less talked me out of it. He says by all means if I want to play with the car but he said in the umpteen years he's been with Montys/Lexus Sheffield he's never experienced any problems with gearboxes. Might still play but it'll only be if I want to get out of the house for a few hours rather than essential maintenance. :edit: Should mention that obviously HJ was talking about CVT boxes which mine isn't. :edit#2: I then called the member of the Federation of Automatic Transmission Engineers that is nearest to me and happens to be Automatic Transmissions of Huddersfield. In his opinion there is a benefit to changing transmission oil in cars from new eg every 40k miles but in my case there would be none as there is no history of changes. If something is on its way out a few 2 litre changes will make no difference to that fact in any way. He also said there's the very real risk of disturbing "muck" as he put it, that at the moment is quietly sat there doing no harm. So I think I'll leave it.

and Exactly what I mean! Since you posted the article John I've been reading up. A few drain and fills can't hurt, especially at only a couple of litres a time. I think the complete 8ltr drain or flush I'd be wary of though. Like all the dead leaves and twigs I imagine in the bottom of my fuel tank I dread to think what I'd disturb in a gearbox
-
Interesting. I've voiced my scepticism about gearbox oil changes on here before, mainly because over on the American forums they tend to go completely the other way changing engine and gearbox oils like most people change socks. However, I am thinking of bringing this up next time I'm over at Lex-Tek and see what Dave has to say.

One of the few niggles with my GS is the nearside wing mirror. The photochromic/auto-dimming element has gone bad and the glass needs replacing. Did all MK2 GS have auto-dimming mirrors? And were all GS mirrors the same fit and size? I'm thinking pre and post facelift. Does anyone know? The reason I ask is that I see plenty of reasonably priced complete mirror units on the Bay but not often a mention of them being auto-dimming.
-
Certainly. And you're braver than me. Most of all it's good to see someone else determined to keep these cars on the road.

Good work!

Thread from the dead! Work has yet to pick up this week so I've just spent an extremely enjoyable (really!) couple of hours replacing the broken aerial and I wanted to say thank you to all in this thread and @LEXLS The link to lexls.com was invaluable and even though mine is a MK2 GS the procedure was much the same. Unfortunately my plastic cable had broken so I ended up stripping down the aerial unit itself to remove the old one but extremely simple with a good guide and a car manufacturer that has the foresight to build a car and install parts that can actually be mended. Nuts, bolts and screws rather than one time clips and sealed units. 👏👏👏 to all concerned.

Mine's got a radio. And a cassette player.

Water leak
rich1068 replied to Bobgauntlett's topic in RX 300 / RX 350h / RX 400h / RX 200t / RX 450h+ / RX 500h Club
Hi Bob and welcome. Have a search through the RX section and you'll find leaks are discussed. Don't limit yourself to the 300, the 400h sometimes suffers too. I'd double check the sealed sunroof but also check the roof rail feet where they're fixed to the roof (easy to remove and reseal), seam welds around the tailgate and obvious stuff such as glass seals. Too far forward to be rear light seals. -
Rx 300 navigation
rich1068 replied to Houghy's topic in RX 300 / RX 350h / RX 400h / RX 200t / RX 450h+ / RX 500h Club
Sounds just like what was happening in my '02 GS when the unit was failing. I assume the units are the same or very similar? My nav wasn't working when I bought it off Ron but cleaning the disc seemed to help. In the end I think it was the ejecting and re-inserting of the disc that did more. Then it would occasionally work, freeze, not recognise the disc etc. I didn't use a lens cleaner but there's no harm in trying, they're only a few quid. Recently had a go with one on the IS CD player. In the end I picked a unit up from eBay advertised as spares or repair because the seller didn't know if it worked. It did -
Looking at buying 'Sportiest' IS
rich1068 replied to B80's topic in Lexus IS 300h / IS 250 / IS 200t Club
And to echo comments above, I wouldn't pay any attention to reviews. -
Hey Ron! Happy New Year to you and your family. The car certainly does continue to please. I get the feeling that not many people outside this forum understand quite why I'm driving an 18 year old Lexus (my children certainly don't, Freda just keeps her piece) but I find it an extremely enjoyable and comfortable drive. I also have some cosmetic improvements in mind for 2020 if funds allow. As far as the antenna is concerned I think it's the constant up/down of stop/start town driving that has done for it. I've have previously put a little WD40 on it but I think it's wear on the toothed cable. And not one for naming cars but Leckie is a nice touch. That might stick! But a nip of uisque you say? That may being going a little far for a car. Unless of course it's a blend

Something I Should be Concerned About?
rich1068 replied to NemesisUK's topic in Lexus RC Owners Club / RC 200t / RC 300h Club
Can you feel the scoring? At this point I'd probably just put it down to a bit of muck in between the disc and pad. Do another 30 miles and see what happens. -
Update on this. I have ordered the antennae and belt from Lexus. Pricey but I don't really mind if it does the job. It's an odd one, the car was so cheap but is so reliable I'm OK with spending a bit on it when required. Hopefully it should arrive in the next day or two. Also, you probably know that I do use this car as my daily and as SWMBO currently doesn't require a vehicle it's also the family car. So off we went for our regular seasonal trip to Blackpool Paris for a couple of nights and the car performed flawlessly. Never missed a beat there and back. I don't think the economy figures are too bad either considering it was 5 up with a boot full of luggage. I had better on the way back from Inverness but that was mainly due to the cameras all along the A9. Anyhoo, my little experiment to see if you can run this sort of motor on a day to day basis continues
