While I've got you all, not entirely related but I intended to reset the ECU as I had once or twice on the GS. Instructions in the tutorials state Make sure the ignition is turned off Remove the engine bay fuse box cover Remove the 20Amp/25Amp EFI fuse Remove the 15Amp ETCS fuse Wait 30 seconds Re-insert the two fuses Install the fuse box cover I have a 20amp EFI 1, 10amp EFI 2 but I don't have a 15amp fuse marked ETCS. Could anyone confirm both on my '96/'97 LS?

Right then... Firstly, thanks to Paul for the info and PM'd research re: replacement later ECUs. Secondly, I'm not convinced I have an issue with the temp sensor but rather how the ECU manages the running of the A/C compressor. As Paul points out a later ECU may solve this. I've been observing the car's behaviour today while driving around town. Stationary idle isn't too much of a problem. The pull experienced due to the increase in revs is possibly more noticeable due to it being a 4.0litre V8! What is more concerning is the pull felt at slowish speeds in traffic. 20-odd mph on a slight downhill or level road and the car is quite capable of taking you over the 30 limit when the A/C kicks in. Turn it off and this behaviour stops.

Hi Bill. I'm still sceptical but now due to knowing how much a main dealer (ie your Toyota dealer) would charge for not very much work. And I find new car dealers aren't that interested in older models. Not knocking them, just saying how I find it. I appreciate you may not have a trusted independent near you but if you like the car, it owes you nothing and it's going to cost £xxxx to replace I still wouldn't write it off just yet. But that's me. I'm daft with these things

If you're fitting them yourself I'd go OEM https://www.lexuspartsdirect.co.uk/parts/lexus-is/lexus-is-phase-i-1998-2005/lexus-is-1-brakes-transmission/lexus-is-phase-1-front-brake-set/

Cheers Paul. Further investigation and reading required I think. I'll post up a video in the morning of what is happening. Though I should add that I wouldn't describe the idle as erratic and it certainly doesn't cut out. I found plenty of references to both while searching but not much that described my situation.

I can't remember exactly what he said but Dave at Lex-Tek said something about the issue being ECU/software related and was always a thing even back in his day at Lexus Sheffield. You're correct that A/C often has an impact on engine revs but I've never had it to this extent. For example, it can mean the difference between the auto box holding you on a hill or not! I've left the A/C running on every car I've had since 2003. I think this is the first time I've turned it off! Even with the climate on the pump doesn't run continuously, it's just when it kicks in and out.

Lexus Used Approved car condition topic
rich1068 replied to Linas.P's topic in Lexus RC Owners Club / RC 200t / RC 300h Club
The only advice I can give you Linus is that the softly softly approach always works for me. Keep it friendly, calm, non-confrontational but be persistent and be prepared for a bit of a slog. And personally I find the involvement of third parties just gets peoples backs up. I would certainly not be mentioning court unless you have the absolute final word from Lexus or the dealer. I've never had to resort to that or even mention it and I've had two brand new cars replaced FOC and numerous quite major issues sorted by certain German manufacturers mainly by smiling sweetly and appealing to the other parties better nature. On the face of it these items should have been replaced before you took delivery and if the facts are as you state then you should be able to reach agreement with either Lexus or the dealer. Don't give up on the involvement of Lexus themselves. After all, the much mentioned warranty attached to used Lexus is based on conditions set out by the brand not the dealer. -
Now I'm led to believe this is a "feature" of the LS400. That as the A/C kicks in the revs rise considerably, most noticeable when stationary or at low speed when the car almost drives itself. My LS has spent much of its life outside the official dealer network, was there ever a fix? Specifically a software fix that may be available at a main dealer? Owners must have complained at the time. It's not a major problem but it is an annoyance. I've taken to switching the A/C off when I'm driving around town but I'm not entirely happy with that solution.

I've had Essential and regular services from the main dealer on both the IS and RX. Nothing was ever added on unnecessarily but I guess that depends on your dealer. There are fewer checks made on the Essential so it's not quite as complete and I've found that "Essential" is often written in the book next to the stamp. However, when I had Gold membership on here my local dealer would offer the discount on the regular servicing but not Essential. This made the price comparable and the need to go for Essential unnecessary.

looking at IS300 today, help appreciated

I thought the same which is why I wondered if the Altezza badging etc was just a mod. He seemed pretty convinced it was an IS300 though. -

Not sure really. The only options I've ever really seen are nav, leather and xenons. I'm sure someone else could tell you more. Cam belt is as I say 10 years or (I think) 100k. Should have been done at least once and it's coming up for another. -

If it's the 2JZ IS300 and not a rebadged IS200 then I certainly wouldn't describe them as sluggish. Plenty quick enough for me anyway! -

Altezza? An import or made to look like one. If you've got the reg then the .GOV site should give you clues. Got a link for the car? Apart from general condition and "feel" if it's in fact a UK IS300 then look for evidence the cam belt has been done. £300ish job if not. Should be every 10 years. 2JZ-GE is strong but look to see if it's nice and dry underneath. CD player probably won't work but if it does that's a bonus. Rust on the front edge of the rear arches and sills. Rust generally especially around the front and rear suspension components but quite often it looks worse than it is ie surface only. Other than that it depends on how confident you are of sorting it yourself. Lack of service history (apart from cam belt) doesn't bother me too much because they're easy to work on. Keep us posted
