  1. When the AC is on the fan normally cuts in and out as needed - over a few minutes it should do this a number of times. If the fan isn't coming on at all with the AC on and and the temp set well below ambient and blowing chilled air into the cabin then there is something amiss.
  2. And that's why insurance is rising so fast - a few years ago a damaged door mirror didn't warrant an insurance claim unless bodywork was also damaged, but now when it costs £000's for what is not an uncommon occurance one has to make a claim. New cars costs have ballooned with the addition of all the tech (much of it not needed and in many cases largely unused) and with the knock on rise in insurance, motoring costs are quickly getting away from many people with little public transport options to speak of!
  3. Yes that's the facelift model - front end was slightly redesigned and the steering wheel has squared off buttons instead of round and new wheel design.
  4. IMHO the pinnacle for BMW was in the late 1990s - I had an E39 528i which was a superb car in which I covered 200k miles in 10 years which included many journeys around Europe at high speed with very few issues. I had BMWs before the E39 and other BMWs after it (faster then the 528i) but none lived up to the E39. That's when I decided I needed a change and went for the IS 300h in which I've covered 110k miles of it's total 150k miles and I put up alongside the E39 as one of the best cars I've ever owned.
  5. There is nothing in the service schedule that Lexus publish, at least for the IS 300h.
  6. Here is the original thread with how to get to the fan and filter to clean it in case you haven't seen it.
  7. Like many other things that people (and particularly YouTube "experts") comment on, I think you have to ask yourself would Lexus / Toyota with all their many years of experience in designing hybrid systems and many millions invested in R&D and testing to destruction, let the hybrid battery be damaged in such circumstances (given they warranty it for 15 years with unlimited mileage with regular hybrid health checks) rather than throwing a warning message so someone could clean the filters? Of course, there is no harm in checking and cleaning the filters yourself so long as you put it back correctly and don't cause any damage or create another issue. So if it gives peace of mind then I have no problem with people carrying out such maintenance (and I may do it myself given the age of my car and the mileage) but I personally don't believe all the YouTube "experts" craving views by spreading doom and gloom so they can get their monthly Adsense payments. Just my two penny worth...
  8. Lexus doesn't say to do anything and it's not in any service schedule. The car will throw an error if the hybrid battery is not working as it should due to eg insufficient cooling. Some on here have cleaned the filter - there is a good write up with images. Some have found the fan and filter dirty and some clean - may depend on whether you carry people / goods in the back frequently that shed materials that will get into the filter. Potentially lower mpg may be a symptom as the hybrid battery may not be performing optimally if the filter is blocked. FYI my car is approaching 10 years old and has done 150k miles and I've not touched the filter and mpg is as good as when it was new. I am thinking of having a look within the next few months if I can find the time to do it but I don't feel in any rush as I am not experiencing any issues.
  9. I think these days the actual value of the car influences the premium much less than where one lives, personal driving record, and how the insurance view the economic repairability of a car.
  10. That definitely looks good - there are a number of areas that get surface rust quite quickly such as the top of the struts and around the inverter housing. The oil doesn't surprise me. I have never topped up my oil between services and my car is now getting on for 10 years and has covered 150k miles, and on checking the oil hardly ever moves on the dipstick. Just checked it recently as it's due for it's 150k mile service this month and the oil on the dipstick looks like when it first went in 10k miles ago. When you get the windscreen replaced keep a careful eye open for water leaks. I started getting a damp passenger side front carpet and found dripping from under the dash. Asked Lexus to investigate and they said they thought it was from the windscreen. I had a new one fitted a few months previously so took it back to the windscreen fitters along with the Lexus report and they replaced the windscreen again. They told me that there was something at the top of the top of the windscreen that hadn't been done properly leaving a small gap for water to get through. Sorry I don't know any more details but it's just a word of caution to check after heavy rain for any dampness on the front carpets for a couple of months.
  11. Agree with @GMB - my 2014 IS 300h is under £500 incl. indscreen cover, courtesy car, legal cover, 15k miles per annum incl business mileage and total £450 excess with my wife as named driver. My postcode is probably in relatively "good" area but we are in Berkshire not far from Reading. I have max NCD and no recent claims. Certainly plenty of choice on the comparison sites so I would start running some quotes and see how you get on. Don't forget best insurance prices are found about 3 weeks before you need the policy to start and so if you are try to get immediate cover you will pay a premium but many be able to take a new policy and cancel the old one if you find yourself in that position.
  12. As above it can be changed in the settings menu. Default is to show the hybrid dials in Eco and Normal and the tacho in Sport but that can be changed to eg show tacho in all modes which lookams like what someone has done.
  13. I saw an LBX on the road yesterday for the first time - when seen against a mix of other cars in traffic I was surprised how big it looked...
  14. There is plenty wrong across all generations and for the young getting on the housing ladder is certainly a challenge but not impossible if one sets ones expectations right and forgoes some of the things too many often see as something they are entitled to. I know, my own daughter got herself a small flat on the south coast on her own (so no help from me). She was earning the average salary and it's a ex navy property - nothing fancy, not in such a nice area, but she is now building equity and paying less for a mortgage than she was for rent. She bought with her head rather than waiting forever for a something that her heart might want. Back to OAPs, if you get to know people closely who actually live on the basic state pension in a small cold terraced house as their only asset and see how they live I think it would open your eyes. And yes I'm from the North of the country originally and had family members in just that position - proud people with a heart of gold who wouldn't ask for anything but were incredibly grateful for anything they received. As we get older our views and our values change. Of course you are entitled to express your views and some are certainly valid, but there is always another side.
  15. But a lot aren't in £500k houses - away from the south (and even in some places in the south) they may well be in small / terraced houses only worth a fraction of that so they have limited opportunities to do anything.
  16. Until one is faced with that situation no-one really knows how they will react. I've had a similar experience recently with my own home and it really surprised me how much it impacted me emotionally.
  17. If you can replicate the issue on demand then take one of the Lexus service techs out with you and show them what's happening - I've generally found that's the best way to get to the root of these sort of problems a few times over the years (with whatever car I was driving).
  18. We have a yacht on the south coast (so in salt water) with an iron keel so you can imagine that although it's epoxied and anti fouled we still have to treat some rust on the keel every year. By far the best rust converter and proofer we have found (and which is usually recommended for yachts) is Fertan: https://www.fertan.co.uk/product/fertan-rust-converter/ - you can buy it in many different places. We've tried others but nothing had been as good as Fertan for converting the rust and stopping it coming back. The first image is what the keel looked like the first year we lifted it having just bought the boat. We stripped the keel and treated with Fertan before repainting with epoxy primer and antifoul. The second image is a few years later with having just treated some small patches of rust with Fertan in the intervening few years each winter. If Fertan works this well on iron in salt water then it will certainly work well on light rust on cars.
  19. Well at least you got to the bottom of it - the discs / pads replacement cost sounds a bit high mind you - unless they added time in for investigation - when I had my issue, after investigating the caliper was replaced under the 10 Year Plus Extended Warranty at no charge to me and then I just had to pay for the new rear discs / pads which was £355 (they said something about that being a fixed price deal and on the invoice there was some discounts against the discs / pads pricing). However, you're done now - unless there are any caliper issues hopefully the rear discs and pads will now last the life of the car!
  20. I had to have mine seen to on my 2014 IS 300h. It started by not latching intermittently and over about a year finally gave up completely. Happened to be in for a service with Lexus when it failed so they cleaned it up and replaced one of the springs. It's been working fine since. Others have mentioned problems with this latch too around a similar age so obviously something that needs a bit of attention when approaching 10 years old.
  21. I'd have no problem with means testing winter fuel allowance such as linked to pension credit if the basic state pension was something people could actually survive on but there are many pensioners who do need the winter fuel allowance and now won't receive it. The means testing that has been used is cruel to those who are just at state pension and worked all their life to get that. Giving winter fuel allowance to all pensioners may be wrong but this change is just as wrong in the other direction...
  22. Yes there is so little done to encourage entrepreneurship in this country any more - it's all about how much can be squeezed out of those least able to resist aka micro and small businesses - and dream up more and more obscure tax rules that are difficult if not impossible to defend against (IR 35 being one). The Conservatives had lots of opportunity to put right some of those wrongs but were not interested in small businesses seeing them as an easy cash cow rather than an investment and aren't therefore much better than Labour in that respect. I'm starting to wind down now and will eventually retire. Really not sure I'd try to start a business again if I was in the same position as I was a couple of decades ago. My brother started a business about the same time as me and has recently sold it and it was such a huge relief for him too when he could finally step away from it. There's no support now for those willing to take a risk and create wealth - just more and more people working in the public sector ringing up liabilities there will be no one left to pay for. And I have some of my family working in the public sector (linked to defence of our realm) and TBH I've now said to them they might as well get what they can as working in the private sector is becoming a hiding to nothing.
  23. Yes I know - many people abused the support given and overclaimed - due to being a limited company with variable income and hence minimum salary topped up by dividends as and when the company can afford it (which could not be included as income), we were left in a black hole with little help compared to sole traders who had a lot support through grants etc, or anyone in a normal employment with the support they got, and in particular the public sector who were hardly impacted financially.
  24. Tell me about it - small Limited company - didn't get hardly any help through the pandemic and had to take Bounce Back Loans to get by that I'll be paying back for a good number of years now...!
  25. Yes I've always found them very helpful (the Lexus and the Toyota side) when I've wanted parts - I tend to order from them as I can do it online and get them delivered so saves me having to take the time out to visit a dealer and collect what I need.
