Oh, the shame! Just paid someone to wash the car!
Malc1 replied to LenT's topic in Lexus General Discussions
might just be showing the weaknesses in the " factory finish " .. and knowing that the clearcoat is always going to be susceptible ........ after my understanding that so much touch-up and repair is done at the docks / quayside to all and any the imported cars before they get to the Main Dealer as pristine brand new unblemished spotless showroom cars ! They've often been thru' ta Mill before they get to that unsuspecting proud first time buyer 🙄 Malc -

I was previously understanding that the battering the car gets from the auto car washes brushes might not do the paintwork any good ? Malc -

Can’t believe this simple topic has got so “ heated “ Well I can really, people often get ired-up, irated and irritated ……. must be living constantly “ on edge “ some of you guys here 😰 my EE bods hand held hose- down and soapy sponge produce a brilliant drive-off drip dry ……. Drying off Blowing in the wind blow job too ….. the great advantage of my £4 occasional Event is it shifts all the crap and crud lodged in the wheel arches etc too I’m happy for sure 👍 Malc oh, and I pay cash, usually gold coloured coins of the realm M -

Aged ( getting there anyway ) owner here and with masses of monster seagull poo a very regular feature of the look of my car(s) I've resorted to a £4 hand jet and sponge wash at a local emporium . they do full valet too and all inbetween BUT with seagulls doing their worst, or best, the £4 wash gets her admirably clean and then a drip dry on the way home Malc -
maybe mine are of a different type of plastic product from 1995 ......... mine seem to be simply solid right through with the same colour, just a lump of moulded disc shaped plastic . they won't take paint or lacquer finish it seems ( with any degree of consistency ) . indeed, my wheels were refurbished by powder coating and they told me they should last another 15 years subject to me being careful and avoiding dings, dents and bashes ..... of course .. finish longevity is simply down to me and my driving style 🤣 One of my centre caps has a couple of grooves in it from carelessness some years past by someone ( heaven's not me eh ! ) and i haven't had the grooves filled as, actually, they are of course the same colour whatever the depth of the zap Good luck with yours Malc

is there an original " finish " to protect do you think ..... mine after 28 years probably look like new with zero covering nor protection . solid coloured plastic right thru might be quite impervious ....... maybe ! Malc
-
if it's solid plastic right thru then you won't need a lacquer finish ? Malc

On my Ls400 I recently, well, last year I think, just left the centre caps as original unmolested, solid all the way through, grey " silver " ish plastic, factory finish, and had the remainder of the wheels powder coated to simply match the colour of the original unmolested centre caps . saved money and. well. took them back to original Malc

Please shoot me down in flames if I have this wrong ! If these are solid "silver" coloured plastic covers / inserts . as they, the centre caps, are on my original Ls400 wheels .. cannot the paint lacquer finish be totally removed, to get back to the original solid plastic and colour, with the rest of the wheels painted / powder coated to match the finish and colour of the solid plastic inserts ? Then you'll never need to worry about the " finish " breaking down in anyway just a thought Malc

love the colour of the Ls600 but oh dear, why can't potential buyers search the MOTs stuff I wonder . and there's zero mention of Full Lexus Service History etc The blue one looks very ordinary tbh 🙃 Malc

Mr19 . this looks a very fine example to keep in " aspic " . a collection car and to be used " high days and holidays " but not too many holidays maybe I have looked at this advert lots of times and have owned too a brilliant white J 92 plate Ls400 many moons past . probably 15" wheels, brakes, tyres etc A brilliant car back in it's day and I had 180k miles from her too J 54 DAP . took me much over Europe in the day too 🥰 Couldn't fault it a great deal BUT these cars need using to keep everything in fine fettle and mobile . rarely use her and you might never get a big bill for anything ........ BUT wot a waste of a brilliant driving car ......... 😥 Spares are said to be challenging for the Mk1 and Mk2 these days even thru Amayama and Rockauto maybe ........ it's an ancient car I had my J reg one for maybe 70k miles and 7/8 years and sold her to a buddy at 180k miles for his dad who'd always wanted one . then immediately thereafter my M reg Mk2 and then my now N reg Mk3 which is covering a blissful driving experience now of 246k miles with regular preventative and normal maintenance etc ............ BUT this is a car which really needs to be used to keep everything mobile and in fine fettle ........... the same I would especially say for the Mk1 you're discussing here . It's a Collection Classic methinks .......... pays your money and enjoy . in this condition they could be very rare indeed and last another lifetime and have zero untoward expense .. maybe 😇 Good luck Malc

For me the comparisons are are little irrelevant really …… there’s no compulsion for me yet to discard my 95 Mk3 Ls400 …… MOT time and intervening roadside casualty issues could make my decision making more focussed of course ……. as with any car The Ls430 could be a happy option for me but I’d have to weigh up the quality of maintenance and servicing, preventative maintenance too …… that radiator change, steering rake issues fixed, air suspension having been changed or at least replaced, window delamination ……. And there’s more for sure …… vvti issues too ……. The need to replace a rear screen on a Ls400 might pale into insignificance riskwise tbh …… but that would be likely catastrophic 🥵 Who would know what on earth to choose eh until that need arose ……… decisions decisions decisions …… and your cheque book of course 😂 Malc

what I'm just not understanding is the likely impact upon overseas tourists in their ordinary cars ....... wishing to travel around Spain and spending tourist euros to help bolster the Spanish economy .............. or NOT I had a wonderful month a few years back, just pre covid, travelling around Spain and Portugal ...... and over very many years much of the rest of Europe too and NOW feel that me and my car(s) and my tourist spend just isn't welcome anymore ....... is that really so do you think ?? Will I just have to spend my motoring holidaying and all my spare cash ££££ just around the UK and Ireland ........... all glorious to drive around mind you 🤩 Are we effectively being banned from Europe driving around willy nilly? I s'pose the same applies with certain cities in the UK penalising tourists and non-ULEZ UK cars too ...... and Classics too maybe It's not good eh ! Malc

madame guillotine no doubt 🥶 Malc

Christian hi . are you able to elaborate a little further on this please ? Thanks Malc

went shopping today and noticed some bugger overnight in a white vehicle has left much of his paint on my offside rear bumper ...... hope his car's well damaged .... mine will probably just polish out and leave a reminder along with all the other dings and dents on my dearly beloved Cest le Vie Malc

John . I don't know the real life experiences of owning a Ls430 BUT I do with the Ls400 . 20+ years and maybe qtr. million miles and of the Mk1, Mk2 and now my Mk3 . well the Mk3 is best The Mk4 Ls400 I've never owned, also has a few foibles reading here, not least being the steering rake mechanism that might be challengingly expensive to sort out .......... my Mk3 Ls a steel washer about 20p 🤩 I'm sure hoping you'll make the right choice for you Good luck Malc

Mario, she looks a nice car indeed and welcome to the LOC in addition to the advice of these two gurus I'd simply suggest that various members here have bought the incorrect radiator . the set-up on replacements sold aren't always quite right . so just take extreme care with which one you buy Good Luck Malc
