  1. Caustic soda definitely works but can work too well, actually dissolving the pipe or the joints! Spilling it on skin can lead to permanent tissue damage and in the eyes, blindness. One-Shot works well but carries the same caveats as caustic soda. It can also be difficult to source since the acid attacks of recent years. If you do use these highly caustic or acidic cleaners wear thick rubber gloves and eye protection. Also a good idea to spread petroleum jelly around the plughole to help protect it from corrosion. As you pipe is only semi blocked I'd try one of the modern enzymatic cleaners. It uses bacteria to eat it's way through the sludge. Best added last thing at night and left to work overnight. Won't damage the fitting, or you and is environmentally OK.
  2. SAGA do a reasonable offer of 3yrs fixed price premiums, as long as no claims are made. I was with Direct Line for almost 20yrs and each year the renewal letter arrived with an increased premium and I would challenge it, they would drop it down to within £5-10 of the existing premium. Two years ago the letter arrived with an almost 40% increase! I challenged it but they refused to entertain any reduction, so I moved, to SAGA paying slightly less than the existing DL premium.
  3. Since ditching the high performance, highly modified cars of my youth my insurance premiums have equated to approximately £1 per day and in recent years more like 60p per day. A small (might even say trivial) sum to pay allowing me to do something I really enjoy.
  4. Differing age, driving experience and NCB... So, hardly showing that it's gender that makes the difference!
  5. Electromagnetic or eddy current braking could easily stop a 2 ton car on a sixpence. The Bullet train uses such a system as do many other train. Even mine haulers rely solely on them
  6. Electromagnetic brakes have been in use for many years now. This is an interesting read. http://www.electric-vehiclenews.com/2016/04/electromagnetic-braking-for-electric.html https://www.quora.com/Why-dont-cars-use-an-Eddy-current-braking-system
  7. My first question would be why did the driveshaft "come off"?
  8. Which lights do you currently have on the car? To upgrade to HiDs, legally ,may involve lots of work and expense. Simply putting HiD lamps in light units designed for halogen will be an MoT failure, never mind inconsiderate to other road users.
