  1. My car has been back to the dealer a few times in the last month to complete some warranty work, and as such, I have been in the unusual situation of having the use of a base spec UX and a Takumi UX300e within a week or so of each other.

As a direct comparison, it is almost like testing two completely different cars.

I will admit I am not a fan of the standard spec UX250h.  I am not going to go into details, but it was very much not my cup of tea.

However, I rather enjoyed my time in the electric version, partly because of the spec, but mostly for the driving experience.  Now I will say that a lot of that is probably down to the novelty factor but I do think it would take a while for me to get bored of it.

Also, regardless of the method of propulsion, the comfort and convenience difference between the alternate ends of the specs was stark.  Granted you are talking of a over £20,000 price difference, but that doesn't change the experience.

Ultimately, what I am trying to get at is that I wouldn't own a standard UX250h but would certainly consider a UX300e Takumi if it was affordable.

That idea young man, followed by some I must add , indicates in my humble opinion a moral compass which heads due south, implying cake and eat it  and does nothing whatsoever to promote confidence in our economic model.

One day you will reap as you sew.

Not my idea of a Lexus driver at all.

Perhaps a bit harsh there John.

What if it is the equivalent of a victimless crime?

After all, the salesmen obviously don't mind (I have had a few suggest to me as well) and if the finance company were unduly affected then they could surely make a change to the T&C to add a surcharge - after the initial cooling off period of course - like other financial products?

Ultimately, if it is subsidised by the manufacturer and they are happy with the deal then what's the harm?  Even with the deposit contributions it appears to be in their favour to seller the car otherwise they wouldn't provide it.

Personally, I don't think I would have much of a moral qualm in doing as suggested if I were in a lucky enough position to be able to do so.

  3. Damn, this is sad news indeed 😢

I had a conversation with John a while back and it involved how he can best help members on here (with the infamous shock absorber problem), which just goes to show what kind of man he was.

Likewise, as others have said, I was very impressed by the depth of his knowledge on many subjects and would always pay attention to his replies for help in the hopes of learning something new.

Despite being on a lot of forums over the years, I think this is the first time I have been genuinely saddened to hear of a members' passing.

    My condolences to his family.

  4. Thanks for doing that Phil.

As a customer of Lexus Reading, I am very interested to hear more about this.

If the terms are the same as the old Extended Warranty then it is a good sign of faith in their product since it actually extends the scope from the previous 10 year/140k mile limit.

It does look like it is going to cost more for this warranty though as it would now be £948 for 2 years' cover for the IS as opposed to the old £795.  By this rational, I would expect my GS to be somewhere in the £600-700 per annum range.

I was also told about their new low cost servicing option (I believe they said it would be called Value Servicing) but I wasn't aware of the criteria.  Since I am in the same position as you Phil with my car going over 100k miles soon, it appears I can benefit from this cheaper servicing as well.

I just wish they would just go ahead and announce it so we all know where we stand 🙂

  5. I did this last night as my insurance is due in 2 weeks.

In no particular order, I searched:

    Confused.com

    Comparethemarket

    Gocompare

    Moneysupermarket

In the end I went through Confused to a company called Dialdirect (never heard of them before) for a reasonable sum.

I always do a comparison every year as it doesn't take long and you don't get any sort of loyalty for sticking with the same insurer.

  6. There is certainly some inconsistencies between dealer pricing, but Lexus Reading have always been happy to lower their price if it is more expensive than what is on the UK website.

Shouldn't really have to go to the trouble, but since they are franchised dealers, I suppose they can set whatever cost they like..

  7. Yes, that was the fitted price.

They originally quoted me £335 until I pointed out the price on the Lexus UK website:

They looked it up and then said it would be £295.  Strange thing is that I assumed these prices were the same for all dealers, but it appears that they charge whatever they feel like.

Good deal for you though 🙂

As there are no refunds on the extended warranty for the second year and it runs to its end, I’ll need a service in the next few weeks and will also get cover free with the service, hence covered twice.

Do you mind not telling me what to do.... who the hell are you??? It's a discussion forum and I was merely pointing out that having multiple insurance cover on a single item is not a good idea, can you not see that if a large claim was presented that it could create an issue?

I believe John is referring to the original statement that you made regarding refunds on extended warranties, by which you seem to suggest as a fact something that isn't correct.

As you have stated, this is a discussion forum, so others that read what you have said may take it to mean that you have researched the topic and are referring to something other than just what you believe to be true.  This could lead to members not pursuing a refund on their warranties based on what you have stated.

So, by that rational, perhaps it would have been better if you had quantified your supposition by saying 'I believe' or 'I think', otherwise I can see how it might be annoying to other members who have spent the time research the topic appropriately.

Anyway, decision time for me is in November when my current Extended Warranty expires and I will take a view at that time which direction I then take. This was my first Lexus (after quite a few BMWs and Mercs in the family along with a smattering of Fords and a Honda) and I purchased it for all the reasons that come out on this forum and looking forward to a long term relationship with the brand - however with no more IS saloons and now this it may be the last - time will tell...

September is decision time for me and I think I will be without my GS shortly afterwards..

I have zero doubt any Lexus will do 200k with no issues, but a factory backed warranty for the cost a service is another matter...

I'm sorry if this sounds offensive, but this is a rather foolish statement.  Have I got the wrong end of the stick or are you saying that you think any Lexus car can make it to 200k without suffering any issues?  Even if we are referring to only major components, then this would still be a strange position.

Perhaps it was just badly worded, but if not, then I am sure there are many owners (myself included) that can easily disprove this view.

  10. I have to admit that the car makes so many funny noises that I have trouble telling which ones are supposed to be there 🙂

I thought I did hear something but I certainly didn't mention it to the service guys, so the technician noticed it himself and reported it.

£186 per hour labour?? You are joking ..right??

Up here Teesside Lexus is around £80 per hour labour.

I also asked about an update to the Sat Nav after seeing someone on here say they have been told between £200 and £250 and was tole it was £163.

This is the labour rate that Lexus Reading charge.  Not sure about others, but I suspect it would be similar for all the Jemca group dealerships.

  12. Yeah, especially since I had planned on another 2 years extended warranty when mine ran out in Sept.

The shock would have been £445 and I am not sure on the TPMS valve but between the valve itself and one hours labour to install and program the car I would expect anywhere from £250-300.  Perhaps someone else has had it done and can comment?

I can tell you that the dealer wanted £203.93 to replace the back box heatshield that had fallen off.

  13. My car needed:

    • New TPMS valve for the front passenger tyre for a leak
    • Heating element for the drivers seat
    • New transmission oil pump
    • Rear passenger side shock absorber

It also need new rear discs and pads, but they of course are not warranty items.

My extended warranty did cover everything, and the new Relax warranty would have taken care the seat and oil pump but not the tyre valve or shock absorber.  The problem is that my car won't be eligible for the new warranty as it will cross the 100k mile threshold soon.

As for the breakdown cover, whilst I am sure there are some good ones out there, since this service is provided by the AA, it is easy to make a comparison for cost purposes.
