Toyota 2AR engines from a another forum discussing noisy engine starting.

    Quote

The first type is a 1 second start-up rattle caused by general "looseness" in the valve-train system before the oil reaches its normal pressure. It's not catastrophic and does not require an intervention. One can argue that it's not good for the engine longevity, but there really isn't much you (and the dealer) can do about it. Considering that the 2AR / 1AR engine family has been around for a while (since 2008) and in general has proven to be fairly reliable and durable, the best you can do is to just ignore it. Replacing VVT actuators may reduce the problem but it won't eliminate it completely and the rattle will come back.

The second type of rattle indicates a problem in the VVT system. The VVT actuators are designed to return to a "home" position when the engine is shut down and held in place with a pin until oil pressure has reached it's normal value and the VVT actuators can operate as designed. However, sometimes the locking pin gets stuck and does not hold the VVT actuator in the right position upon start-up. When this happens you can hear a loud rattle and the engine shakes violently because the valves are out of timing. The rattle and shaking usually stop after a second or two, but sometimes you have to turn the engine off and restart it.

Do You have also this type of drone? It was filmed inside my car about year ago.

No noise on my GS other than a 1 second rattle on the engine when cold starting. I am fairly certain is normal for a car with hydraulic tappets.

Smooth & quiet at all other times.

Did someone experienced rattling sounds from engine at startup?

My GS300H does similar on a cold start. Sounds like oil has drained from the top of the engine & takes 2 seconds to be pumped back. Hydraulic tappets??

I hadn't until now though much about it.   I will have to mention it to the dealer.

  4. I guess it depends on what you want a car system to do. What I want the Lexus system does well enough.

Music, Podcasts connected automatically via Bluetooth. Emails & texts read out & displayed on the screen.  I still like to play a CD & a DVD player is nice to!!

I use the satnav regularly and it has always got me there without issue.   For sure the digital cockpit system in the Audi is superb but as most are company cars very few if any will opt for it.

I also don't like the Audi tablet stuck on the dash look & prefer the built in way Lexus do it.   I use a mouse & trackpad on my PC so find the Lexus joystick more intuitive than a wheel.

No experience of a Ford apart from hire cars & never overly impressed. Not a car I would spend my own money on.

I had a look at a £30k Vignale & it was desperately trying to be premium but it was just a Mondeo with horrid looking  quilted seats.  The ICE system wasn't great and just the same as a standard Mondeo.

Premium is more than toys to me it is more to do with doors that thunk and Fords dont.

    Can my car do this?

I have a 2014 GS300H and yes it can & does read out emails & texts. I didn't do anything other than Bluetooth link my phone a galaxy S6 edge.

    Works very well.

Podcasts with description etc appear on screen to.

I actually don't want emails popping up & read out rather just have texts but seems you cant have one without the other:winkiss:

Much depends on what phone you have. Some are compatible some are less so.

I also have Google search enabled. Install an android app called Blue DUN on your phone for it to work. (The GS uses a dial up connection protocol!!) Then you can search for eg. Tesco and it searches the local shops & sets the nav to the one you select. Basic but useful.

he key blade is fine as Lexus will order me one off the chassis number for £45, but they are scratching their head over if it is possible to get a replacement  fob to work..

Theives can programme a fob with a laptop in seconds & steal your car so sure a legitimate Lexus dealer can to!!

I see that there are links to an Amazon page but there is nothing about brake pads for the IS 300h.

Rears are  available for the IS300H. I posted the links.   Wagner Thermoquiets & Akebono.  Fronts are to just have to cross reference the part numbers. The IS300H isn't sold in the USA so not listed but other Lexus models use the same pads.

My GS definitely makes use of the brakes at all speeds so don't really agree that Hybrids use regenerative braking most of the time.  Some of the time & in addition maybe. The low speed grunt of the rears has gone now the ceramics are fitted.

So again I have run into a brick wall trying to find, in this case, front and rear dust-free brake pads for my IS 300h.

amazon.com have them. Lexus models. IS200T GS250, IS250 IS300H share the same rears.  The IS300h is not sold in the USA so will not show up but the others do.   Wagner Thermoquiet part no QC1391

Fronts I think are these but check first I have a GS so cannot compare the originals.

    TRW  TPC1178  or Akebono ACT1178

  9. The seller will be amazon.com & not a market place vendor.    You may have to cross reference which fit your car. e.g my GS300H has the same rear pads as a GS450H which is what I ordered. (The 300H isnt nsold in the USA)  Pretty sure that the IS300H has the same rears.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004A6BUWW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These fit the IS250 which may have the same as a IS300H double check it though. The link will also try to go to amazon UK but order on amazon .com USA site.

Is it really worth the hassle and expense when Hybrids hardly ever rely on pads and disks for braking anyway?

What makes you think Hybrids don't use the brake pads to stop? What hassle? What expense? Same cost as standard fitted in half an hour    I fitted a set to eliminate the low speed brake grunt that my dealer said was normal so definitely worth it imho. Lack of black dust is another plus.

But the E CVT does not use rubber bands ! or did you not know that either ?

To say Lexus only fitted a CVT because a conventional gearbox didn't fit is ludicrous.

After a trip in my colleagues E Class diesel I realised how civilised the GS is. Boy that 2.1 lump Mercedes use is noisy. Thankfully dropped on later cars but believe they still use it in the current A class:ohmy:

  12. I fitted a set of Wagner Thermoquiet ceramic pads to the rear of my GS300H in an effort to get rid of the low speed brake grunt which my dealer said was normal.

It worked to, it is now nice & quiet no grunt & and little to no dust.

I have a set to go the front but not fitted them yet.

Ordered from amazon.com took about a week to arrive.
