if you look at the tyre labelling you can see which tyres have good ratings for
Mpg , Wet braking & Road noise
i normally look for tyres with at least a C for fuel , B for braking and 69Db or less for road noise
( A is best & F is the worst)

215/45/17 is the standard lexus Ct 17" tyre size so i wouldn't of thought they would put
any stress on the gearbox as long at the circumference of the tyre is the same you wont
have any speedo discrepancies either
what is the tyre size of your 15" wheels it can then be checked to see what tyre size you
can go to keeping the speedo reading correctly

heres an idea for you james a heated reversing camera.
the times i get to work and then cant see as the camera
has had moisture blown over the lens giving a distorted image
Vw hide their camera behind the Vw boot handle
this keeps the lens clear from frost and blown water

maybe its a relay's contacts fluttering and making the clicking noise,
there maybe enough power to move them but not enough for them to latch

one thing that doesnt help your fuel economy
are hills and in Hampshire you seem to have your
far share of high points
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hills_of_Hampshire
i'm not saying they all have roads on them but it does give
a good indication of how the land sits
