  1. Hi. How easy is it replace the windscreen washer pump and does anyone have instructions or a how to do it video please?
  2. Well on it goes! 126k on it now and just passed mot with no advisories! In the 11k since the last mot its cost us a cv joint (£192), one service (£110), ac recharge (£35), and two new Michelins (£220) - can live with that on a 15 year old car!
  3. Interesting outcome! Garage stripped it down and found the o/s cv joint had gone and not the drive shaft. £192 worse off, a few pounds shed through worry and pick the car back up tomorrow! Phew!

  5. It is - it's been diagnosed as a damaged front drive shaft. See my post "£824 etc" Am getting it refurbished at £199 thanks to Sorcerer here - just waiting to find out when my local guy can strip it down etc Not looking forward to hiring something like a Picanto!
  6. Sir you are a star! £199 to recondition 2-3 working day turn round. Very relieved! Thank you!!!
  7. Independent has told us about £1k all in. Can that be right - 02 Rx 300?
  8. Well they've been and cleared lights, engine runs fine - but no drive! ns front drive shaft gone! Serious number?
  9. Our 02 125k has been driving perfectly until an hour ago. Got back to it after local shopping and sounded like nearside front wheel had fallen off, vsc and eml light on. Managed to limp it back home, felt as though a clutch on a manual was slipping etc etc Green flag on way - wish me luck!
  10. Have you tried switching the aircon off to see if it's the compressor? Our 02 with 125k on it has a noisy compressor bearing and sometimes it can be heard in line with the revs. Probably not but just a thought
  11. We ran a lovely 02 GS300 alongside our first 51 plate RX for a while and let it go simply as we didn't need both. Six months later the RX got written off, we ran a runabout for a while but "it wasn't a Lexus" and we eventually tracked down our current beast. I'd love a 430 but not sure I'd have the "resilience" not to explore its pace! We pay about £50 a month for tax and insurance, and have a brilliant independent who looks after our car. When the RX split the exhaust and we were told it would be mega he pointed us in the direction of a local specialist who custom made it for £240!
  12. We run a first gen 02 plate with 122k on it, our 3rd Lexus, and 2nd RX We get it serviced, put fuel in it and point it in the direction we want to go. Without missing a beat it goes there and back at pace, we've just completed our 6th 500 mile round trip in 9 weeks (due to a bereavement and needing to sort things) on top of normal stuff - and it's been faultless. Aware of its age and rust being flagged up on the last mot (a previous owner had a boat) we've begun to think about "the future" but the forum comments that seem to appear frequently about battery and hybrid and air suspension faults are a concern. We're not going to be looking at a £15k plus thing when the time comes so do we just run the current beast till it drops (we can cope with its thirst and the need to get the air con compressor bearings done some time) or is there a model out there that that can be left in airport car parks for weeks on end and start, for example, or won't want some serious money for air suspension pumps etc We love the seamlessness of the good old V6 and it's ability to transport loads and cover ground with ease. So the question is ... what next?! Are there years and RX models to avoid once you move into the "more modern" era?
  13. We had a similar problem with our 51 plate, was eventually thought (after countless trace efforts by various people) to be the anti lock brake ring on that wheel (nsf) but a little old lady drove into the side of us and the car was written off before that fix could be tried. (No warning lights ever came on for the abs though) The car was cat c, we got rid, but see its been motd since so presumably whatever it was was fixed brake wise. The reg was EM51 AAM so maybe you could ask if someone on here has it as they might be able to help?
  14. Can heartily recommend Dean at Pipecraft in Basildon for help with exhausts, either in full or part. The exhaust on my 14 year old RX300 had clearly been patched and welded over the years before we got it, and also was found to have a leak from an O ring too. Even part of the system was well north of £300 plus vat, delivery and fitting and this didn't include the front flexi pipe etc etc etc. Delivery was 7-10 days minimum at best, and none of the normal exhaust shops could help. Dean spent time assessing what could be retained (not much) and what they could custom make, identified the O ring leak, and £240 plus £13.93 for the O ring later (supplied in 2 days by Lexus Rayleigh who were really helpful) I now have a silky sounding RX again! Obviously his expertise isn't limited to the RX, he is able to custom make most things (and sounds!) so maybe admin can to add this recommendation to a general forum page if considered appropriate. Their no is 01268 285535 and no I'm not connected with them!!
  15. Wondering what (cold) pressures do other mk1 owners use/prefer. Appreciate book says 30, one garage says 31, another 32 etc etc. Running on 225/70/16 Primacy 3's Many thanks Keith
  16. My beloved 02 RX300 waltzed straight through its mot, with only one advisory "under vehicle corroding and petrol pipes" They said it just needs a wire brush and waxoyl on it as its all very low level but wondered if anyone had any thoughts, comments, experience of this sort of thing and the best approach. Car has 115k on it and continues to drive like a dream!!
  17. Rob - the nsf is very lightly scored on its outer edge but otherwise they are great. Have to say that I was bit worried that there might be some hidden big bill as it's had some money spent on it in 2015 (£500 on brake overhaul, cambelt, 4 michelin premacys, plus the garage found new roll bar parts with no paperwork etc) and I only paid £1850 for it! There's a small patch of rust on the edge of the nsf wheel arch and, for some reason, a patch 2" x 3" on the tailgate just below the handle! Also it's had roof bars in the past and the black on the roof needs refreshing as a result - I'll be getting these sorted in the months ahead. Jack - the side steps really set it off but (and this will sound daft I know!) you do have to use them when getting out (rather than stepping straight onto the pavement which is the automatic reaction at first) as you rub the edge of the side step against the back of your leg otherwise. Just takes a bit of getting used to! One thing I am looking at doing is something with the rear parking sensors! It has had a Lexus tow bar fitted and has a switch in the boot to turn them off when something is being towed. The thing is they don't have a volume control and they emit an ear piercing screech - and I mean screech. It explains why the rear bumper is unscathed but its like the car's saying "OMG you've selected reverse!!!!" I'm honest enough to say that I don't have the courage to just switch them off, I was thinking of getting an overmirror dash cam kit with the additional rear camera, but I haven't found one yet that will fit due to the width of the standard mirror. Will keep searching but not crucial.
  18. Finally managed to get a complete check done on the 114k 02 RX we bought a few weeks ago, and got a good result. Apart from the things we knew about (sticky accelerator cable at pick up, parking brake cables need adjustment and slight blow from exhaust) it got a thumbs up with nothing needing doing! So booked in to get those done, and a service, and all seems good to go! Phew!
  19. Going to use the bank holiday weekend to identify what needs doing on the 114k 02 RX I picked up yesterday. First thing - there is an initial stiffness in the accelerator when setting off so can see this could be tricky in traffic. Have to press the pedal quite firmly, nothing at first, and then car picks up smoothly but a bit jerky in traffic. (Have had an RX before so I know it's not normal) After that point accelerator works exactly as you'd expect - it's just that first part. Car drives like a dream otherwise. Can someone advise where/what I should start looking at please! The car had been sat for a few weeks before I picked it up and in 10 days it will be going in to my friendly independent for a health check anyway, but wondered if it was an easy obvious fix for a relative novice to do themselves over the weekend? Thanks as always!
  20. Going through the bills this evening I see that in 2015 he paid £48 for 2 wiper blades at Lexus (wonder if he'd like to adopt me!) , put 4 michelin primacys on at £420, spent £470 getting the brakes done all round (though the parking brake needs adjusting) as well as regular servicing! Gee I hope he got a good trade in cos this cost us less than £2k So far I've found that the tailgate handle sticks but works and locks, there's a very very very slight wheel wobble "at motorway speeds" (I know from previous experience how sensitive the RX is to having the tracking absolutely spot on), a bulb has gone and worst of all, and I hate to say it, there's a scratch on one of the alloys. I will get it in to my friendly independent in a few weeks to service and check over pre mot in August, but I think this looks like a keeper! Mind you the last one was until a little old lady ran into the side of it!
  21. Our last one was silver but with a darker bumper and side "cladding" This one is silver and without any "cladding" on the side (if that makes sense!)
  22. After our much loved 2001 RX was written off in January we tried to "make do" with a different car instead. That lasted four months!! Picked up this lovely 2002 114k today and wow - it was good to be back! A 200 mile trip back with it was a delight, had forgotten quite how good they are! Realised it's not two tone - is that unusual?
