    I`m pretty sure that is the way to do it per the Handbook. Thy Hybrid system is set up so the the computer system determines when to go into each mode. Not the driver. Generally speaking a cold start will not permit ecomode as the capacity of the Hybrid Battery is insufficient to power the car.

    If it`s from a non Lexus Dealer you could have it checked over by Lexus immediately after purchase and hand it back if things are that bad ?

    Chasdad (John) I endorse all of the above. I have not read or heard of a single Hybrid Battery failure of any Lexus vehicle which has been bought (new or pre-owned) from an official Lexus Dealership and serviced by them in accordance with the Manufacturers Instructions. I`ve had mine for 7 years now, without any problem. Do let us all know how you get on.

    I would say they are John based on my usage these last 7 years. And subject to you following the advice and guidance contained within its Handbook. What year of GS are you thinking of acquiring as Generation 3 (mine) went to 2011 and Gen 4 from then until last year, I think. Depending upon age you can avail yourself of excellent warranties at minimal costs.
