  1. Make sure you let us know how you get on with the headlight refurbishment. Need to do the same on one of our other cars (2005 Mini Cooper), but I have not yet been brave enough to start it. Welcome Kris.
  2. It sounds like you do not run the system on AUTO. Climate control systems work much better if you let them do their thing. If you don't, you run the risk of the seals drying out, which will lead to gas leaking out.
  3. Does all this not reflect today's consumer society, in which people are no longer interested in buying clothes, furniture, white goods, electronics... and cars that are going to last 20 years. How many mobile phones are getting ditched after 2 years simply because we all have the opportunity to renew our contracts for a brand spanky new iPhone or other... when the old one still works perfectly fine! Is it in manufacturers' interest to invest in building cars that are going to last longer than people really wanted them to?
  4. I have owned in succession a RX400h (outgoing Executive Limited Edition), a RX450h (SEI) and now a NX300f (F-Sport). Best on your comments, I am assuming that you would be looking at a previous generation RX450h, as opposed to the current one. Size: On paper, the RX is not that much bigger, but you do notice the difference in car parks and along country lanes. The boot in the NX is smaller, but I have never found it to be a problem. The NX is narrower and this can be an issue if you regularly carry 3 passengers in the back, otherwise space is plentiful for two rear passengers, even with the panoramic root. Room at the front is more than adequate. Performance: No doubt about it, the RX is much more powerful, and therefore feels and is a lot faster. Swifter progress, but you pay for it at the pump, although you'll never stop grinning. I never managed to better an average of 29mpg, but that was without trying hard as mpg never was a priority. Comfort: The RX is very comfortable and I travelled (very) long distances at times without suffering from my back etc. The seats are more like armchairs, the suspension is relatively cosetting. My sons tell me that the rear seats are equally as comfortable and the incline of the backrest can be changed to help find your ideal position. Having said this, all of us agree that the NX is equally as comfortable... but in a different way. Firmer suspension with better control around corners and bends, and seats are better sculpted and more supportive in some ways. Personally, I love the seats in the NX F-Sport. Noise: the 6 cylinders of the RX, backed up by laminated (double) glazing and good insulation contribute to a quieter ride. Also, the engine being more powerful, it is less strained under load. The downside is that you notice that it is far more rattly than the NX. Our RX suffered from a rattly back seat that used to drive us mad, plus the odd squeak here and there that would come and go, and friction noise from the front windows against the runners/rubber (never managed to completely get rid of this), depending on the weather and the outside temperature. On the other hand, absolutely no parasite noise in the NX and I find the engine noise well controlled... until you need to hurry up a hill. Technology: The RX is an older design than the NX. As a result, you get more toys in the NX - depending on trim level of course - and they are more up to date. At the end of the day, I'd recommend the NX over a previous generation RX450h. Unless you want the performance and the space, the NX is a better compromise, it arguably looks better, is cheaper to run... and for the same amount of cash you will get a much newer car. Now if I had to make the choice between the current RX and the NX, I'd plump for the RX!
  5. Possibly, but the CT is getting very long in the tooth and needs replacing. Maybe this could be its successor... although I wonder whether there would be a bigger market for a hatch rather than a small saloon... at least in the UK.
  6. Your comparison is only valid if you compare two cars with similar levels of equipment. I am about certain that your £27k BMW will not be as well equipped as a £29k. I am also reasonably certain (a contradiction in terms :-)) that an X2 hybrid will be a lot more expensive.
  7. No active speed limiter, but you can - in the NX at least - set an audible warning to let you know that you are driving over a preset speed.
  8. I also hear that Google Maps will soon be displaying speed limits.
  9. Green (I think... the light was not very good) Corner of Castle Lane and Knightwood Road, Chandler's Ford, Hampshire. Looked very smart and really stood out with headlights on.
  10. Did you know that, while your built in satnav warns you of the location of fixed speed cameras via two audible beeps and an icon displayed on the screen, it will not do so when travelling through France? The following article relates (incidentally, this is not new!): http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/overseas/radar-detectors-in-france.html
  11. Surely anything that allows you to control the car's systems without taking your hands off the steering wheel or your eyes off the road has to be more than a gimmick? Unfortunately, I have never managed to get the voice control to work for me: it always does completely random things, whatever I ask of it.
  12. Difficult to comment without knowing what your original question was...
  13. https://www.topgear.com/car-news/list/top-gears-top-9-massive-grille-edition#6 I would have been disappointed not to see at least one Lexus in the lineup. 2 out of 9 ain't bad. Like it.. Thumbs up for the ES. However thumbs down for the LX.
  14. Reputational damage? At the same time, and possibly more to the point, you have to be realistic: whatever security system or feature is implemented one week will be defeated by thieves the following week. After all, car thieves have access to the same technology as car manufacturers. Consequently, a car deemed safe today will not be safe next month. Is this really a new issue? Don't think so... The issue of car theft is not a new one. Is it worth losing sleep over? I won't (even though I wouldn't be best pleased if I was to wake up to find my car had disappeared overnight) Incidentally, this issue was mentioned on BBC South Today tonight. While I understand that the press has a duty to inform people it is a shame that they at the same time give potential thieves a nice list of the cars that are most at risk. This is not news... It's sensationalism. Along the same lines, the same program had a feature a couple of weeks ago where a journalist had a small device implementated under the skin of her hand. She could then scan the device to read personal data such as medical records etc. The whole team was all excited about it. Err... Have we not been chipping dogs, cats and cattle for years!?! 15. An alternative to the pouch is to disable the key: on the key fob, keep the LOCK button pressed, while pressing the UNLOCK button twice. Press any button to wake the key up. As a matter of interest, once the car has been started using the relay attack technique, can the car be actually driven, or will it come to a stop once it loses the signal from the key?
  16. Hmmm... drone is probably not the best word to describe it. 😶
  17. I can't help you with the technical stuff, but are you sure you want to do this on the basis that this is only going to make the drone inherent to the CVT gearbox worse? - You will potentially end up with a lot of noise that will not be commensurate to the speed of car / progress being made.
  18. I believe that the under floor space disappears in the AWD version.
  19. Hope you enjoy your new car. chatted to a chap at a service station in Marlborough recently, who had just swapped a C-Class hybrid for an IS300h. He said it was the right decision as he had had a lot of problems with the Merc and that the build and finish was not a patch on the Lexus. You are right... the extras you mentioned are all standard further up the chain. I don't want to burst your bubble, but don't expect the same MPG as with your Mercedes: it is a hybrid, but not a diesel.
  20. You may want to read this thread... There are other threads on the same topic that are worth reading
  21. Yay! We want pics, or it's not real!
  22. I don't think the dealer is hyping it. I have bought three cars from them (Southampton) and I have a good relationship with them. They seemed genuinely ecstatic about the interest shown in the car... maybe because they were not expecting it, based on the reviews you mention. On the other hand, these reviews are consistent with regards to Lexus's quality and reliability, looks, comfort and low running costs (compared to the competition). To a lot of people, these are more important than outright performance on today's congested roads. I will definitely let you know my views after April 8th, as I'll have the car for 24 hours and the opportunity to drive it on the M27/M3 and local country roads.
  23. I switched from Yokohama to Cross Climates and they transformed the car. I definitely recommend them. I did have issues with availability, but the tyres were very new at the time, at least in NX size. Incidentally, the best price I got was from my local Lexus dealer.
  24. Also viewed the UX at my local dealership this weekend, and I like the car a lot. In particular, I like the layout... it feels spacious and airy at the front. However, the booth is very shallow indeed.
