Lexus Is Diesel Particulate Filter Dpf Problem / Solution
normski2 replied to Kev B's topic in Engine & Transmission
Blimey...if you can get 2yrs warranty for £500 you'd best snap it up quick. Better £500 than £4500 if the head pops. No, mine is Arctic Pearl (pearlescent white). -
Around town and on my run to work I get 28-31mpg. On a decent run with some motor way/dual carriage way I will see 34-36. On an extended m-way run it can be 38-40 (using cruise control). This summer I drove a section from LeHavre to Bourges and got just over 40mpg. The V6 auto is just a sublime place to be. Give one a try if you can get the opportunity. I think you'll be amazed.

Tyre Recommendations
normski2 replied to opsmajor's topic in Lexus IS 250 / Lexus IS 250C Club / Lexus IS 220D & IS 200D Club
Some tyres are just noisier by design. The road surface certainly does make a difference, as does the tread pattern, size and rubber blend. It's a concoction of the whole lot. It's one of those subjective things to a degree. Whatever you are happy with...stick with it. For me the noise issue was from the rear of the car. Maybe the 250 would benefit from a bit of extra sound dampening being installed. Quite a few reviewers in the mags have mentioned the cabin noise as being a bit on the noisy side. One thing I would say though. I had Bridgestones (turanzas and potenzas) and I found them really quite noisy on pretty much all roads in the UK. I also found there was a real problem with tramlining (I know this can be made worse by the staggered set up on my car) with the car veering off line for no apparent reason. The only time I found the Bridgestone noise acceptable was on a brand new road in France 2 years back! Personally I wouldn't recommend the Bridgestones but I would definitely approve of the Goodyears. That's not to say there aren't any other good makes out there....there certainly are...you've proved that along with others. No one is going to shout at you for having your say. -
Tyre Recommendations

I second this. Ive had Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetical 2's for the past 36000 miles ( 2 sets with plenty of life left on the second set). Highly recommend. BUT definitely worth getting an alignment done to prevent inner tyre wear on the fronts. Does the Mk2 suffer same inner tyre wear as the Mk1? Or is an OEM spec alignment sufficient? Well ........ it can suffer inner tyre wear if the tracking is poorly adjusted...thats a definite!! Most better tyre centres now offer full geometry alignment. £20/25 Ok its a few quid but tyres are not cheap these days. Besides if you get a couple done you have the chance for a bit of friendly haggling. -

European Road Trip - Need Headlamp Adaptors?
normski2 replied to Connoisseur's topic in Lexus SC430 Club
Speed cameras on the motorways are always obvious as they give plenty of visual warning. You just need to get your eye adjusted to what they look like .....smallish oblong pillar at roadside and its facing you head on. Its the hand held radar traps out on the ordinary roads that catch people as there is no warning at all. Likewise, I always use cruise on the autoroute....its better for mpg anyway. -
European Road Trip - Need Headlamp Adaptors?

Just as an aside I'd recommend you carry in the car at all times (lock them safely away or hide them somewhere) Car Insurance Certificate Driving Licence(s) Passport(s) You'll probably never be asked for them, but on the occasion you do, you'll be mightily relieved if you can produce them. Incidentally, if you get nabbed by a speed trap you will have to show all three and have the cash with you for the fine. Otherwise, if what I was told is correct...they can escalate it up to points and a fine. At least that was what the owner (French) of our gite told us...his wife has been nabbed twice and he once in the last 12 months. They were not happy bunnies at all. I guess its a similar case in Spain. You could always check with the AA or RAC. Take a gander here if you want a tad more on the bridge http://www.leviaducdemillau.com/#/accueil/ and here http://www.tourisme-aveyron.com/en/discover/unmissables/millau-viaduct.php Have a good trip -
European Road Trip - Need Headlamp Adaptors?
normski2 replied to Connoisseur's topic in Lexus SC430 Club
If you have HID headlamps with a flat beam pattern then I'd say not. I have HID's with a flat beam...was told I did not need them deflectors. Had a note in my glovebox for the duration of the hols. Nobody said a word about the headlioghts in two weeks moving around. And I got stopped by the Gendarmes near Clermont Ferrand on a random check. He wanted to see my licence and insurance. Also wanted registration document...explained we never carry them as the car could be nicked and transferred in the blink of an eye. He was OK with that. Did not ask about Deflectors, Spare bulbs, Breathalysers, Yellow jackets, Red Triangle or owt else. And I had the whole lot ready for him if wanted it too!! Seemed more taken with my car than owt else. Not many Lexi in France. I gave my letter to a CT200h driver at the ferry port on the way back then printed off for my travels pack. Take a look here http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/90147-headlight-deflector-on-rx300/ Make a copy of the letter at note 3. Thats what I did and kept it in the glovebox. I also had an entirely meaningless set of old deflectors from a Nissan that i figured i may use as get out of jail card!! BUT, .....if you have good old Halogens (with the flick up at the edge of the beam) then you will need deflectors Millau Bridge....definite must see. Stop at the view point prior to the bridge on the way South for a good viewpoint. Look for it on Google maps and you'll see where the turning is. You can do street view on it too!! -
Wheel Emblem

Can the tabs be softened with heat to straighten them? Might be able to pull them through and then re-bend after painting? -

If I remember correctly..the logo has little sprues that go through the back plate which then end in fattened blobs on the rear to hold tight. I've heard of people either melting the blob with a soldering iron or scraping them off with a flat blade screwdriver or (very carefully) with a wood chisel (if you are handy with a wood chisel). Once off you can paint the back plate but you will then need to bond the logo back in place. -
Have a read of this..post 11 is the main event http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/96602-volume-function-not-working-on-2007-is220d/#entry899491 Hope it helps. Got to be worth investigating. It's easier to get into the boot than taking the centre console apart. Would be worth contacting Rizzy and see if he had any photos to guide you.

What happens if your phone is connected and you start playback on your phone? Don't really know what to suggest as I have Iphone and Ipod and it all worked straight off. Sorry. Have you tried disconnecting everything and start over? Its not possible you only have phone connected as BT is it. Then you would need to add the phone again as a portable player?

Lexus Is Diesel Particulate Filter Dpf Problem / Solution
normski2 replied to Kev B's topic in Engine & Transmission
In the first instance you ought to go back to the dealer you bought it from. You are legally entitled to expect a vehicle that is fit for purpose...sounds like this one needs a looksee. "Looking back at the MOT history its only been doing 4000 miles a year for the past 4 years so I'm guessing its just not being run the way a diesel engine needs" Your assumption is quite right. This is potentially why the thing is starting to show signs of becoming coked up. It was probably doing short journeys and not getting hot enough from a decent blast. It is likely your DPF will be approaching soot capacity...that'll be another Check VSC warning light and limp mode unless you can get a regeneration started. Your friendly chap may be able to assist you with this if he can plug in his laptop. I can only speak from my own experience, I'm no expert, I just learnt a few things by experience and investigation. I found the use of additives to be a benefit. The fuel must have been burnt 'cleaner' as each time I checked the EGR there was just a light coating inside. Prior to that it would be somewhat clogged. There are DPF additives as well....they may well help your needs. Think twice if you are advised to get the DPF removed....it is likely to turn into a very costly MOT failure. Talk is of the MOT getting more stringent for diesel vehicles. I don't know much about the jet wash method but have heard of folks having good results from having it done. If you want to do a bit of reading there is a fair bit of useful stuff here. http://www.powerenhancer.co.uk/ http://www.oilem.com/fuel-catalysts-archoil-ar6200-2/ There are other products from other manufacturers. I just have links to these saved in a folder. Bardhal is another maker of these products...Northants way I believe. Best of luck with it all. -

I leave it on permanently. I like the more responsive feel and seemingly better gear changing. Don't find it makes a jot of difference to mpg. -

Why not see if you get in there and fix it.......your kids will love you forever.....not that they wouldn't anyway!! -
This is my "How to" from the 250 section May well work on yours too When you change the battery you MUST re-initialize each window in order to be able to control each from the drivers door switches. In order to do this you perform this operation at each window using the switch on the door for the window you are at. If you look closely at the small led on each switch you will se it is blinking - this indicates the windows need initializing. 1. Open the window halfway using the door switch. 2. Fully close the window by pulling the switch and continue to hold the switch up for 4 seconds or so. 3. Do this at each door. When complete the blinking will change to being a constant glow ie 'on'. Your windows will now fully function again from the driver's door control set. Hope it works

Lexus Is Diesel Particulate Filter Dpf Problem / Solution
normski2 replied to Kev B's topic in Engine & Transmission
Good that its sorted. The EGR is something you will need to keep a monitor on. It will likely coke up again reasonably quick if you are only doing short journeys. There are some good videos on Youtube, and on this site too, all about how to clean the EGR yourself. Its not that tricky...once you've done it a few times you will do it in 40 mins. When i had a 220d i used to check it every 8000 miles or so. There is a piston inside..check also that the spring is making it seat properly each time you clean it. If its not seated properly it can upset the mixture and make it run quite rough. You might want to look at additives from the likes of powerenhancer.co.uk. I used Archoil AR7200 at 5ml per 50 litres at each fill up. You can also buy top grade Diesel , but I found it cheaper to go the AR route at the time as premium diesel was a lot more per litre. I also put through a can of BG244 every 8000 miles to clean out carbon deposits. Wynns do a DPF treatment flush too. I expect a few other 220d owners will offer their views too. Its worth reading up on all this as you don't want to be facing big bills....or just keep renewing that warranty with Lexus. Mine had a new engine after the head went ...it was covered by Lexus....but the bill I saw was nearly £5000. Best of luck with it all.
