  1. You only access that option with the power turned off.
  2. +1 to that. Usual rules apply...... No smoking near a open battery and no sparks from anything metallic clipping the terminals. It is reasonably safe ... just exercise caution.
  3. Don't know what size wheels you have. Could be 16", 17" or 18" Judging by your pic I'd guess they are probably 17". Do you have wider on the back? Mine are 18" with 225 on the front and 245 on the back. Ooh ........ now what tyres? Can 'o worms opened there. Hope you get some other feedback. I'm going to suggest Blackcircles are pretty good for an online search and they will point you to a local supplier. They have quite a range from many manufacturers. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric2's are sound in my book. Good for grip and quieter too (than what I had before Bridgestone Potenza and Turanza). Read some reviews on different tyres if you want to research a bit deeper. Its worth it. If you get the fronts done too then make sure you get the full geometry check done. Tyres are expensive so make them last to the max by getting them checked every year for geometry. Hope you get some other suggestions.
  4. That's not right. Was the road clean...or muddy. Farm mud from tractors can make a difference. Are your tyres way down on inflation pressure? Are they nearly bald? Are they some cheapo budget make. If i was guessing I'd say your tyres must be right down on tread. My old Turanzas were hopeless when they were nearly shot. They'd spin pulling a bit quick out of a junction. Personally I did not like the Bridgestones that were on the car when I got it. Have Goodyears now.....much better and quieter too. I have to push mine to a bit silly lengths to make it slide in the wet. But then, I am more cautious in the wet anyway. But 10mph, that's really hardly moving. Are you with Manual or Auto box? If you wick it a bit it will race thru the gear changes in the auto. One of the reasons you need to be careful in snowy conditions.
  5. You'll find the foglights are right so and so's to get at. What lights do you have at present.....HID or Halogen?
  6. Take a look on Youtube and you'll find some useful videos that will guide you. Enter "lexus is250 ashtray removal" as your search criteria.
  7. Its worth checking that the access doors are closed and fitted properly. They have a rubber gasket ring that seals them tight. Anyone been in there recently and not quite re-fitted the access door correctly? Then check your headlight lens for any signs of damage. You can use the hair dryer as Jack suggested, or let a good sunny day do it for you. But you will need to open the access panels to allow the vapour to escape or it will settle inside again.
  8. My sentiments entirely. They can be sourced for many different vehicles.
  9. Are you saying the HG has blown? Don't know what it would be at an independent garage. They would have to source many of the required parts from Lexus. I saw a bill for my 220d HG repair. This was done at a Lexus garage and paid for by Lexus. It was in the region of£4000.
  10. +3 to that. The 250 is the best. I've had both 220d and 250.....chalk and cheese. If you are very very lucky you may find a good 220 but there are not too many of those in all honesty. "have owned Celica gen 6 and 7 for the last 10 years so am used to toyota reliability".......don't wish to be alarmist but the 220d may change that view quite considerably. Go and audition both and see what you think.
  11. Please think long and hard about this. This could turn out very expensive. I know it can cause issues but the DPF is in there for a reason.....namely to make diesels cleaner on the emissions Take a read here https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-rules-for-mot-to-test-for-diesel-particulate-filter If you do this you need to be aware of the possible repercussions.
  12. You've had some rotten luck here mate. Here's hoping all is calm and stable for some considerable time for you.
  13. I was hoping a current 220d owner might chip in. I had a 220d some while back, but moved over to the 250 as soon as i had the opportunity. If you fear the HG issue. Take a look at the underside of the oil filler cap..... any mayonnaise like residue in there? With a cold engine....pop off the radiator coolant top....any droplets in the oil or exhaust fume smell in there? Have you ever had the EGR valve cleaned at all? Bit of a long shot....but I had a symptom like this with my 220d. The EGR valve was coked up badly. There is a piston inside the EGR and if its crammed with soot it can stop the piston seating properly when its in the closed position. This then has a detrimental effect on the mixture of air and fuel and gave me starting issues like you describe. Its quite easy to clean. If you get it off you can scrape it out with a selection of screwdrivers. Just make sure that seating is a good fit. There are a few vids on youtube and even some on this forum. I see you are away from home.....take a look here Best of luck chap let us know how you get on.
  14. Just had an idiot in Renault pull out across 2 lanes attempting a right turn. He must see me I thought.....my headlights are on. No..he pulls straight in front of me and I have to stamp on the brakes to avoid him. It was perilously close....old greybeard did not even see what he'd done. Followed him to the lights and shot him twice with my imaginary hunting rifle.......much to the amusement of a local taxi driver. At the lights he decides he wants to be in the left lane so just pulls across in front of a people carrier......no indicator....nothing. He missed that vehicle by an inch...literally!! Guy gave him the lights and verbals.....nothing...not a single response. Next roundabout he nearly took out a cyclist. If you're in Bournemouth near Castle Lane, watch out for a blue Y reg Renault Clio driven by a doddery twit.......should not be on the road.
  15. Well, that seems to work. How long between re-cleans...roughly? I realise sunny days will be a factor. But is it back in one season?
  16. Well....to be honest I stumbled across the power enhancer gear when I had my 220d and I found their products to be very good and I kept going with them when i moved across the 250. There are plenty of testimonials on their site. My method of use is as follows (this is for a petrol fuelled car) 1. I use a can of BG44K into a 50 ltr fill up about every 15,000/20,000 miles. To assist clearing out of any carbon gunk that can be got at this way. 2. I put 5ml of AR6200 into 50 ltrs of fuel every third fill up. I buy my fuel at Tesco...plain old unleaded. It is just cheaper ...plain and simple. But I'm doing my own additive to perk up the petrol. The car runs beautifully and is smooth as silk. There are plenty of other products out there that no doubt do the same thing...I just happen to chosen Archoil. Had a look at my plugs at 60,000 service and they were perfect. Almost seemed criminal to have had them replaced. But hey ho!! Dean.........I'd have a look into cleaning the mass air flow meter as a first easy to do. Google it and you'll find loads of useful videos to follow...in fact here is one for you to watch The device he shows is the same as the one fitted to the Lexus. The ignition is OFF when I do this. Personally, whenever I do this I unlpug the connector first and then take out the MAF unit. I wouldn't want to have a clumsy moment trying to get the connector plug off with the MAF out of the pipe. Then you just need to use a good quality electrical cleaner that leaves no residue. That is imperative....do not use anything like WD40. Then leave it dry for 10-15 mins and reassemble. If this has not been done before....and Lexus will not have done it....they only change the air filter every 35,000 miles (bonkers)....then I'll be surprised if you don't notice a difference in the engine note and smoothness of pick up. That's because the sensor wire has become dirty. This may be your problem you are experiencing. I did mine yesterday (got me thinking about when i last cleaned it) after some 20,000 miles and the difference was noticeable. So much so I went and did the MAF on my wife's MX5 too!!
  17. It's also worth checking the cleanliness of the mass air flow wire...but be careful with it! Do you have a oiled panel air filter by any chance? Just a thought....as over time I've heard people say that can lead to an oily layer on the sensor wire. John....your comments are 'spot on' in my estimation. That was what lead me to using the AR6200. It is said to provide a much cleaner and complete burn of the fuel from lowering the flashpoint temp.
  18. The treatments I am using are introduced via the fuel tank so they will be targeted at the top end of the ignition process. I think you are referring to an engine flush at oil change? Noobie, I think, does this and has had good results. I'm sure he will be along to chip in at some point. Have a read here....may help a bit http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/82312-anyone/page-1?hl=+engine%20+shiver and here http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/79916-carbon-build-up/
  19. I have heard of a so called shiver syndrome from other members with earlier 250's. I think it was related to assumed carbon build up, typically in places like the injectors. Hopefully some of the early model owners will be along soon. Think there may have been some discussion of the merits of Terra lean as well. IIRC some folk used a top end treatment like B44K from power enhancer. I've done mine once so far just as a precaution. I use AR6200 at 5ml per 50 litres fuel at 1 in 3 fill ups in the hope that I am averting these issues appearing.
  20. The one in the boot comes out in a similar fashion to the vanity light holder positioned behind the sunshade, and also much like the one at the base of the front doors. I can't believe how the prices of LED's has dropped in 18 months. The only type that seem to be holding up are the CREE ones - - - - the type I have for sidelights and reversing lights.
  21. What a pathetic response from a Lexus dealership.........unbelievable! Followed by a generous response from a forum member
  22. Well done James. That is a carefully thought out and well presented article.
  23. Be very careful with DPF removal. Do plenty of research first. If what I have read is correct you may find yourself with a MOT failure and a very expensive reinstatement cost.
  24. Here you go...take a look here for a bit of info http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/91490-car-surgeon-birmingham-review/ I'm sure ahmedali will be back shortly
