The Ring charger and leads was about £45
-
I think Len is on the right track with this. My wife and I both retired a while back and both cars were no longer being used on a daily basis. We first encountered the problem as we moved into the winter months. Both batteries are reasonably new (2-3 years old). Came out one morning to take out Sal’s mx5 and the battery was pretty dead. Once I’d thought about it I was aware we had not been out in the mx5 for nearly three weeks! I put my old school charger on it and got it going in a short while. Then I got myself a new smart charger. Mine was a Ring model and very good it is too. I have a permanent attachment to each battery on each car. So I can then connect up to each battery ( one at a time ) very quickly with a fly lead and maintain them in tip top condition. This model, as pretty much all smart chargers do, has a conditioning program within the charge sequence that, hopefully, will prevent sulphating of the cells within the battery. 18 months in and both batteries are behaving perfectly. Just been away for a break in Spain and the airport park up was no problem. The trusty Lexus fired up first time.

Each to their own I guess. I have always used Red Rubber Grease for the slide pins. You can find it most places as 'Toyota Red Rubber Grease'. I found nothing else worked as well over time. You don't want the grease you use to have an adverse effect on the rubber boot on the slide pin. For the pad shims and piston to shim contact area I use Copper Grease. Having said that I do re-grease and check them every year. In fact I've just done them on wifey's MX5

Battery clamp

Yeah that's not very secure is it? I don't suppose the other part of the clamp is at the bottom of the tray by chance? Be handy if it was there. -
I've read accounts ( on the US forum) of folk attempting a lens change and I don’t think it ended too well. I recall some having to resort to putting the whole unit into a oven to melt the sealant in order to get the old lens off, or trying to use a heat gun on the seam. It’s pretty easy to see what can happen to the main body as a result of this. Bear in mind you are needing to remove the front bumper in order to get the headlight unit out…. that’s a bit of a pig of a job. I would go the sanding route and uv sealant. I’ve done it twice in the last 6 years on my HID unit lenses. Last time was about 2 years ago and they still look perfect. I also give them a good waxing twice a year. I used the Holts Restoration Kit. I don’t think it’s a Halogen or HID issue … it’s just degradation of polycarbonate as has been said above. I see it starting to appear on the top edge of the lens on my wife’s Mx5, and they are Halogen.

+1 to all of that. I have tried plugging in a HDD drive but it could not be read either in Mp3 or Flac format files. The system’s HDD space is pretty good to be fair. I have about 70 cds ripped and stored and there is still space for more. You can rip at different rates but I do all mine at highest setting which I think is 320kbps. You can also plug a iPod into the usb port and play music that way…that’s what I do on long journeys. You can also play DVD Audio Discs if you have them. I have a few and they sound really really good.

Welcome to Lexus ownership. As well as all the above good points. See if you can find any previous service history for replacement of the water pump and new serpentine belt with fresh coolant, all being done together would make sense. Also, has the battery been changed, and have the calipers been serviced. Greasing of the slide pins in the calipers is crucial … and Lexus don’t attend to this in servicing.

Keyless entry woes

+1 to the above comment. I had an episode some years back caused by a wireless doorbell. What worked at the time was to pop the battery out and put it back in some feet away from the doorbell. -
Squeal at high revs

Totally with you on that. Two weeks ago I did the callipers and brake pads on a near neighbour’s IS250. He thought I’d be doing it on his drive … no chance I said. Bring it over to me as I have all the tools and kit here at my place 👍🏻 -
Please don't try and lever the caps out from the front ... it won't work satisfactorily and you'll likely damage the wheel facing and that will hack you off big time. You need to take the wheel off and use a fairly large flat bladed screwdriver to prise carefully at each of the four tabs at the back of the centre cap. Just lever them carefully, inwards and the centre cap will start to move forward as you work your way around at each tab. The tabs are tensioned outwards by a circular metal hoop that you will see in the photo below. The tabs and ring is what prevents easy removal of the centre cap from the front face of the wheel. Some years back I removed the centre caps and the L logo so that I could paint the caps black and then refit and bond the logo back in place. Hope that makes things a bit clearer for you.
