  1. That's just the thing, it isn't easier to fit a new caliper. more profitable is probably a better choice of words ;)
  2. Best to relube yourself every couple of years as preventative maintenance. Giving the dealer the benefit of the doubt, until they remove the calliper they don't know if a clean up is enough so they quoted worst case. In reality I doubt many dealer would actual try and clean up an old calliper and pin, easier to fit a new one.

Probably worth giving BG44k a go, in case the issue is with the injectors, however any fuel additive isn't going to help with carbon deposits on your valves - the engine is direct injection, as John previously stated, so the cleaner isn't going to touch the back of the inlet valves. BG have a direct injection product, but it is for workshops to use together with specialist equipment - somewhat like their own Terra Clean process.
  4. Lexus now include cleaning the MAF sensor in the service schedule - about time really, we have been suggesting it for 10+ years on this site. They do however only clean it as part of the 100k service. Probably should be on the 60k service really.
  5. Apparently there is a coating on them, but if they are bad it is better to lose the coating. It just means they won't stay clear for as long as they did coming out of the factory so you may have to repeat the process every couple of years.
  6. FYI the hybrid warranty that comes from a hybrid health check only covers that battery. The motor(s), inverter and ECUs aren't covered. No problems with short journeys for a Toyota/Lexus hybrid system. Standard issues still occur such as corroding exhaust but warranties wouldn't cover that anyway.
  7. If you are suddenly getting error codes after doing some work then I'd suggest something like an O2 sensor isn't at fault. Seems an electrical issue in common with many of the engine sensors such as a poor earth, grounding strap or failing battery.
  8. Sensor issues only occur because people use too much oil when cleaning the filter. Given that you probably only change the normal filter every two years is it really saving that much? They don't filter as well as the OEM filter, but not to the point where it would cause an issue.
  9. I'd like to think that more are being sold than being scrapped at this point in time so it must be getting more common ;) Sales figures so far this year are approximately the same as last year. Just over 2,000 sold at the end of July.
  10. Hi Tom There should be second hand batteries available from breakers, I'm sure plenty of 400h vehicles have been written off by front end damage with a perfectly good traction battery. You certainly don't want to pay for a new battery from Lexus, it wouldn't be worth it. From what you describe though I'm failing to see how there could be a traction battery fault. I'd want a second opinion. There is an external charger available for Toyota dealers, most don't have it.
  11. I agree, and if you are keeping your car for many years it makes sense. If however you were to replace it after only two or three years then it wouldn't make financial sense as the drop in value, due to the lack of FLSH, would be greater than the saving made of cheaper servicing. The biggest issue with independents is they are so localised. Many are excellent but as a purchaser of a used vehicle I wouldn't know if they are good or not. I personally wouldn't purchase a Lexus under 5 years old without FLSH.
  12. I'd make sure he will be using 0w-20 oil for that price, that grade is quite expensive.

  14. It could do but it doesn't. The hybrid system does not take into account the state of the parking brake.
  15. Unless you are going to ship it back to Japan for some factory work there isn't such a thing as Lexus standards - other than using the methods defined in the bodywork workshop manuals. Most dealers don't have a bodyshop, they just sub out the work to a local outfit. Cheaper to just find that local outfit yourself.
  16. Never had such a problem with an extended warranty. If something needs replacing such as a water pump then coolant replacement costs are also met by the warranty. The Lexus extended warranty is up there with the best, only really bettered by the actual Lexus manufacturers warranty.
  17. It is a microwave/ultrasonic sensor, not a vibration sensor. The signal is able to penetrate the cover. The cable connecting it probably has two or three wires within.
  18. UK vehicles have an interior sensor so that the alarm system qualifies as a Thatcham Category 1 alarm which improves the insurance rating. It is positioned so that it can properly detect interior movement, pushing it further back and then placing objects in front of it would affect its ability to do that.
  19. It is just inflation protection and IMO isn't worth it, Lexus service prices have risen greatly in the last 18 months, I don't expect them to rise too much more. When I've had service plans in the past the customer service has been worse, they already have you money so just don't seem as interested. Servicing costs on Lexus vehicles are way out of control at the moment, and no offers with new vehicles. Most of the competition will provide 3 or 5 year service plans for £500 or less. :(
  20. You are wasting energy and heating up the batteries, inverter and electric motor. Whilst you are unlikely to burn anything out by doing this longterm you are reducing the efficiency of the hybrid system by raising temperatures which then means the system may have to back off earlier to keep overall temperatures in check. With you foot on the brake the system knows you don't want to move forward and suspends all power to the motor. It doesn't monitor the parking brake in the same way and is therefore the electric motor is constantly applying a forward force. Either put the transmission in Park, keep your foot on the brake in drive, or use Neutral and the parking brake (this isn't recommended if the hybrid system wants to recharge the batteries at that point in time).
  21. I think all Lexus vehicles in the UK now have a 60k schedule for plugs, and have had for some time.
  22. The IS200 auto box isn't the smoothest but probably still probably worth a fluid change, even if things don't improve it could prevent things getting worse.
