  1. Either the ECU or wiring fault. Possibly electrolytic capacitors in the ECU, if there are any, or wiring corrosion. CIB12181.PDF
  2. Fuel smell in the engine bay or exhaust? If engine bay then it may be that the plug isn't sealing against the head - you have hot gas getting passed, damaged the coil pack which stopped sparking and now the gas getting passed has fuel vapour in it too.
  3. Do you have a fully manual mode, whilst still being in normal mode? The gearbox is a variant of the one used in the F cars - in manual you have lockup of the torque convertor in all gears expect 1st. This is the more fuel efficient mode and obviously the most predicable with gear changes.
  4. No, it's aux in - video and audio so you can use an external device rather than just the DVD player. In theory these headphones should work but never tried them: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adjustable-Universal-Entertainment-Headphones-Listening-2-Pack-Folding-IR/dp/B016CV506O/ref=pd_sbs_107_t_2/261-7111074-5104725?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B016CV506O&pd_rd_r=5200ed01-0e0d-41c0-8574-2d0cb6fc48b8&pd_rd_w=ffIJF&pd_rd_wg=qg2cg&pf_rd_p=e44592b5-e56d-44c2-a4f9-dbdc09b29395&pf_rd_r=6F2XGF9PPG2QZCVKE8V0&refRID=6F2XGF9PPG2QZCVKE8V0&th=1 There should also be a remote control to control the DVD player and screens. These are a little harder to get hold of and you may need to find someone with a remote and use a universal learning remote. TBH the system isn't great and is now 15 years old. A couple of iPads strapped to the seats would provide much more functionality.
  5. Might be worth disconnecting the battery to reset the engine/transmission memory to make the gear changes more appropriate to your driving style.
  6. The rear screens are linked to a DVD player under the driver's seat and there are aux connection in the driver's seat rear map pocket. Sound is via infra-red headphones. The systems isn't linked in any way to the front Nav screen or the audio system. Hands-free may depend on the specific date of build as it got added in 2005. Not 100% about the engine being non-interference. On other Toyota engines the addition of VVTi changed them from non-interference to interference.
  7. Welcome Nick and good luck finding a deal.
  8. Actually all new models had to have it from 2012, and then all cars from Nov 2014. For the MOT, any vehicles registered 1 Jan 2012 onwards with TPMS, will have that system included in the test.
  9. My mistake, I was under the impression that it didn't have one - makes things easier. 😀
  10. It sounds serious, like an engine mount failure, or something in the transmission but don't understand why unless previous work has been carried out incorrectly - like failing to tighten something. Certainly worth asking the question as to why it happened once you know what the issue is. Never heard of anything like this here, or on the Auris or Prius which share many of the same components.
  11. You aren't going to get a P1651 because of a fuel cap or leaking fuel tank. It is very specifically an issue with the VSV that controls the ACIS. The reason for the light going out is probably because the battery was disconnected before the fuel tank was touched which would clear the error. The ACIS on the 430 only operates at 4,700 rpm so quite likely you haven't exceeded that engine speed since, along with some other conditions that need to be met. It isn't a common issue but seems to happen more than expected (normally VSVs don't fail). Maybe because of the location gets it hotter than on other engine layouts. I think they only cost around £60 - so worth asking how much to change it - but I think it will still involve quite a bit or work because they wouldn't take off the inlet manifold to do the timing belt but it does need to come off to get to the VSV.
  12. Not the norm otherwise Lexus wouldn't be one of the most reliable manufacturers, but things can fail. Sounds like you have been unlucky.
  13. Welcome Jim. As there isn't a drain plug on the transmission it is a little more involved but not difficult for any garage or competent DIYer. There are two main methods: use the fill hole to insert a tube and draw out the fluid in the pan. unbolt the whole pan Note however that both methods will really only change 1 to 1.5 litres of fluid out of the 7.2 litres the transmission actually holds - so this doesn't make a big difference unless it is repeated again and again. Also note that the fill procedure isn't difficult but time consuming because you keep having to check the level as you fill, then go through all the gears, then get up to temperature. Once up to temp and level, you then have to add 0.4 litres.
  14. Equally the ban might force the manufacturers to accelerate their R&D, and not hold things back like they do now when they know the competition isn't at their level. Improvements in battery tech over the next ten years hopefully will see some big advances but even if not, we should see year on year incremental improvements in capacity and charging times. Or other approaches such as electric vehicles based on hydrogen rather than stored energy in Lithium Ion cells.
  15. Sorry to hear this, but the warranty should take care of this, and you should be getting a loan whilst it is out of action.
  16. It will allow the engine to shut down and run just on electric up to 71 mph. That is different from driving up to 71 mph - you won't accelerate up to 71 mph on batteries alone.
  17. That won't even replace a 1/5 of the fluid. Most will be held in the TC or valve body. But start to do that at 60k miles and then every 20k miles to keep things healthy. Otherwise do a full replace every100k miles.
  18. My previous IS300h and my current GS are both flaky with this feature. I can go for months without any texts being read then suddenly it works without me doing anything to the phone or vehicle then will suddenly stop working again. My wife's Prius also doesn't work too well, although works more often than the Lexus system. Seems Toyota have a real issue with this feature across all their vehicles/nav systems.
  19. Unlikely to be the battery once the vehicle is started as the alternator would be providing the power needed - could be an alternator issue but would expect other issues and warning lights. I assume you aren't getting the P/S warning light? The power steering ECU has been known to cause issues. The rack also can cause issues but normally that isn't an intermittent issue:
  20. It isn't just the number of speakers. The headunit is different - the base unit is made by Fujitsu Ten, whereas the premium and ML units are Pioneer. The premium system also has an external amp rather than just a headunit integrated one. From an upgrade point of view you could change the speakers, and install an amp which could also drive a sub.
  21. The previous recall was for the two high pressure fuel pumps, not the low pressure pump. The new recall is for the low pressure pump, which is in the fuel tank, the F cars use a different pump compared to the LC which uses a more common part used across quite a few different petrol models - hence this is quite a big recall stateside.
  22. The new WLTP testing is quite accurate - the NX is rated at 35.3 mpg, you should be able to achieve that over a tank provided you aren't just doing 2 mile journeys and the weather isn't below zero. The NX isn't great on fuel, especially compared to the gen 4 RX which is bigger and more powerful yet has almost the same economy. Unfortunately the NX engine is showing its age.
  23. Powerstop Z23 are quite similar to EBC red - £33 from RockAuto but courier/tax costs bring it up somewhat. https://www.powerstop.com/products/#y=2017&mk=LEXUS&mo=GS F&p=Front https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=8172596&cc=3360987&jsn=2137&jsn=2137&jsn=2137
  24. Many of the spec sheets available to the trade don't have the detail of the 8 speaker system. But any nav vehicle will the mouse controller will have the 8 speaker system or the ML system. When the vehicle first launched there was only premium nav, once the lower spec system was introduced I guess the percentage of vehicles sold with premium nav dropped but they are still out there. Whenever I had a 6 speaker vehicle as a courtesy I always noticed the weak performance compared to the 8 speaker system.
