  1. Well I'm partly in a Ford. I've had my Volvo XC60 for about 18 months now and I have to say, it's simply brilliant. Safe, well built, supremely comfortable and a joy to drive.
  2. The procedure is the same for air or springs, the strut has to be removed to get the upper control arm bolts out. The air strut is fixed in the same way as springs, three nuts at the top and one bolt at the bottom. The only difference is you have to disconnect the airline. If you invest in the correct airline removal tool it will save you many frustrating moments! It's only a little plastic thing but probably won't be plastic money!
  3. If you're replacing the upper joints, and its not a bad job to do, I would be doing the drop links and sway bar bushes at the same time. Remember you need to remove the shock absorbers to do it.
  4. When ordering from Rock you need to specify FedEx economy, that way taxes will be included and parts will arrive within the week, I've never waited more than 5 days. If you opt for other post systems you can get stuck with customs etc. FedEx have been brilliant.
  5. I would have an RX sitting on my drive rather than a Volvo if the rear tailgate didn't slope so steeply. We have a very tall dog, and after comparing the two cars the Lexus sadly lost out due to the above.
  6. I know I've posted about this before but I would trust Rockauto for these sort of parts. When I asked Lexus for a price for two upper control arms it was into four figures, Rock were £93 delivered for the pair, and they weren't the cheapest they had! The quality was excellent, and knowing how the Americans love to sue, I don't think a big company like Rockauto would take that risk. I'm only speaking from experience and I wouldn't hesitate buying from them again.
  7. In my experience there's no difference as to which go first. I passed a gold LS430 today and it looked very sad right down low. I think it's a real shame that air was ever used because I believe, and it's only my view, the LS400 does have a better ride as far as the suspension goes. That's just my experience having had more than one of each.
  8. As it happens I bought one of those other cars about 8 weeks ago. A neighbour had a 1999 VW Polo on her drive gathering moss and going nowhere for three years. The very day the scrap man offered her £100 I upped it to £150. I've made it a bit of a quick project. It now has a clean MOT and only 16k on the clock! Surely even Greta would thank me for that! I still have to pass two LS400's locally when walking the dog and without fail I give another glance!
  9. Well I'm not a Lexus owner at the moment, but never say never! Having owned two LS400's, one GS300 and three LS430's, I can honestly say in my opinion the 430 takes the crown. It's easy to complain about the issues they face with age, but you'd be foolish not to expect them with aging luxury cars.
  10. It might be worth a mention that Rock are having a sale on some LS430 parts. I think £23 for front upper control arms are as low as you'll get, and I would trust them more than unknown eBay sellers.

  11. In all honesty I'm not sure you'll get something you'll be happy with for 3k. If you do it's likely to be a poor or high mileage example, and they can suffer from carbon build-up. I think it's after 2005 that the GS300 falls into the higher tax bracket.
  12. The three LS430's I've owned have all had the same misty headlights. I found masking the surrounding paint and spending about 5-10 mins on each light with compound and then waxing lasts a good few months. Once you've done it it's much easier to do it the next time before it gets too bad. I've used elbow power in a circular motion but a small polisher in a drill works well. I certainly wouldn't pay to have it done!
  13. I would also think about replacing the two rubber trans fluid hoses at the same time which is what I did. I found mine on a previous LS to be cracked, again, peace of mind. You'll probably find the foam between the radiator and AC condenser falls apart, just leave it off if it does.
  14. Having fitted an external transmission cooler I can confirm that they cause no issues. My preference would be to replace the radiator, it's an easy job and gives you peace of mind. The original internal cooler doesn't corrode, I've taken two apart and they've been perfect, but as I've previously mentioned, slight corrosion causes the o rings not to seal causing coolant and fluid to mix. Get a decent brand of radiator, fit it and enjoy it!
  15. I think we've been conditioned to just roll over and accept it. It's hard to find the energy to pursue an injustice, but unless we try, the ones who think they rule, they simply win!
  16. Buying any big luxury car that has a few years behind it is like playing Russian roulette. It always makes sense to have a contingency plan of 2-3k in reserve just in case.
  17. "Not in the public interest to investigate " However, if you were a woman on her own named Isabel Vaughan Spruce, praying silently in her head outside an abortion facility in Birmingham, without banners or anything else but her thoughts, you'd find yourself arrested twice in the space of three months and taken away in a patrol car. I guess this is an easy one for the police, less investigative work involved!
  18. Sounds like a broken trim clip. Just unclip the area around it, pull it away and I'm sure you'll find whatever it is.
  19. Just a thought. Is Paul Frost still going? As a Lexus breaker and repairer, I'm guessing he's only about 50 miles from Merseyside. Surely it's a job he would undertake.
  20. That's what I first thought, the cam belt. I suppose it depends on how much investigation was actually carried out or whether it's just an assumption.
  21. I've never heard of that before in the LS400 engine. I don't see why a replacement engine wouldn't be the way to go, it's just a matter of sourcing one. Would your local do the work for you?
  22. Whatever you decide it will never have the fine quality of an LS400, those days are sadly gone. And I absolutely agree about the plastic wheel arches, really naff, that's something I've noticed lately.
  23. Hi Neil, I'm fine and dandy thanks. Although I'm a Volvo owner now I still go to John, as I did for a cambelt recently. Personally, I would travel even if he wasn't local, I trust him completely. A catch up sometime is in order maybe?
