  1. Well at least it's much better than an engine/trans/diff problem. I think the main thing is that you get quality bearings. I replaced some bearings in a piece of my workshop machinery with cheap Chinese ones, they didn't last long! Phil
  2. Mike If it's not a wheel bearing, but it's related to road speed it could be a differential or prop shaft bearing. John N Am I right in saying the diff oil should be changed every 20k or did I just make that up? Phil
  3. I really meant on a slight bend like on a motorway. I guess you need to get it off the ground first and check for bearing noise/play, a process of elimination really as it could be so many things. Lunch break over now, lets see what others have to say but if it's not engine speed related it does seem to point to bearings/diff/transmission etc but then...I am only a carpenter! Phil
  4. I don't think a worn wheel bearing would cause enough heat that you would notice it unless it was really worn in which case you would certainly know about it. I agree with Maurice that the bearings are the first port of call. Does the noise increase when you take a bend, and did it gradually appear or was it sudden?
  5. Hi Mike, You may have considered this already. I had exactly the same problem with my Vauxhall Vectra, a droning sound at 60-70mph which I thought was wheel bearings, I went on the Vauxhall forum and someone suggested uneven tyre wear, I changed the tyres (which were due)and the droning has completely gone. Yours may not be that simple but it's worth maybe swapping wheels around to see if it makes a difference. Phil
  6. Welcome to LOC, I'm not to great at finding my way around but hopefully someone will advise you in due course Enjoy the new car! Phil
  7. Me too. A couple of years ago I had mine up for sale, when a guy came to look at it I was showing him all the gadgets etc and thought "I wouldn't mind a car like that"!!! Thankfully he didn't come back and I still have a car like that! Phil
  8. It may just be something that got slightly bent on the braking system catching on the wheel or the disc. If you can work out which side it is just jack the car up and spin the wheel and you should hear it. I had the same thing when I changed my discs, the bracket that holds the wear sensor bent slightly and catches the wheel when I corner, just needed bending back.
  9. Don't know about the IS but the LS has heat shields between the body and the exhaust, the're known to come loose and rattle. Does the sound like something dragging increase with speed?
  10. And mine, it just started today, very faint but it's there, although it did seem to come suddenly, it wasn't there this morning but it's there this afternoon.
  11. You only need to top up at the expansion tank, and don't overfill or there won't be anywhere for the hot water to go when it expands (except out of places where it's not meant to go!)
  12. Hi Jason, welcome to LOC. Have you checked to see if the radiator fan kicks in when the engine is hot? A friend of mine bought a car recently and found that the wheels needed balancing, but after having it done it made no difference. He took it somewhere else where they checked the tyres and found the pressure to be low. They inflated them and the problem went so it's worth just checking they've put the right pressure in first (always best to try the easy things first) I certainly wouldn't want to do 100 miles until I've sorted the problem. Hopefully others will come up with some ideas. Phil
  13. Certainly if I had "Green stuff" around my battery it would be the first thing I'd check. A bad connection may not affect lights, but it's a different story when it comes to the draw on a battery when the engine is cranked over. Let us know how you get on, always good to hear the results!
  14. Just west of Brighton, near Shoreham Welcome. I'm a Worthing man so we're almost neighbours!!
  15. If it was me I wouldn't be prepared to wait a few months. There's obviously something very wrong and its not going to get better. Is the car or just the transmission under warranty? Phil
  16. Try again! Hi Pete, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I seem to remember reading that the LS made between 93 & 94 were the most reliable of them all.
  17. I asked a similar question last December: Supermarket petrol=emissions failure? You may find it interesting to read some of the comments. From what I understand the jury is still well and truly out! Although those with Bio Chemical knowledge seem to think its not a problem.
  18. I always park as far away from the entrance as possible but often find someone's park a beat up Transit or similar close to me, obviously thinking it's amusing. On the insurance note, mine's a 93LS and I get it covered on a classic car policy. If you listen to the advice given by Martin Lewis (The Money Saving Expert) he'll tell you that often when you ask for a quote for 3rd party only it will be more than fully comp, something to do with them considering you a bigger risk. It's worth a look at this website. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance
  19. Thanks. BTW, what would be the reason for changing the parking brake shoes? Surely they don't wear out. I don't think I've applied my foot brake more than a handful of times in over 3 years. Maybe I should apply it more often to keep it from seizing? The parking brake shoes have been known to break-up. Also, the parking brake is relatively naff. With a big V8, you'd hardly notice if it was on esp. if the warning light is out. Thanks all. I guess I just check them when I replace the discs, and if they look OK, they stay where they are. :)

  21. I assume from what you say it's under warranty? If so take it back, if it doesn't feel right then it almost certainly isn't. Phil
  22. Hi Chris, and welcome. The auto box on my ageing LS400 is so seamless it's not always possible to know if its changed gear, I would assume it's the same with the 430. Intersting to know what 430 owners say but it doesn't sound right. What's the mileage and year? Phil
