  1. My word exactly! Strangely enough, I was in Brighton at lunch time today getting fuel when an early Mini rolled in and two of the tallest men I've ever seen got out of it!! How does that work? Mind you, however it worked, I don't want one!
  2. That takes me back, living just 3 miles from Fulham and having my various cars on ramps, taking gearboxes out etc, always plenty of room. Now our old road is permits only and the house we lived in selling for 1.5 million. How times change.
  3. The fan doesn't run all the time when you're doing motorway type speeds as the air flow cools it, but it'll run a lot more when idling for some time as it's the only way for the coolant to keep low enough. I would certainly start by removing the belt, it'll take just a few minutes and then you can feel the idler etc for wear. It may even be as simple as the idler bearing, it's certainly that kind of whine.
  4. You could just remove the serpentine belt and run it for a few seconds to see if the whine goes, that would eliminate the water pump as well. Have a new belt to put on afterwards. A very easy job. Sounds like a bearing anyway.
  5. I think your comments on them only being lumps of metal are spot on. Sometimes these cars (although exceptional cars) can be talked about as though they are alive with a soul! They all end up as something else one day.
  6. I've got one of those friends too, and he said the same, mostly due to expensive electrical failures.
  7. Plus, if I was unfortunate enough to be in a bad accident I wouldn't want to be in the Fiat. You may remember a member just a few years ago who crashed his LS400 and was told by the police that he may not have survived in a "lesser" vehicle. And of course the Mercedes wouldn't allow you to go far unless it came with a built in auto electrician.
  8. Well doesn't that look just superb! I really don't know what a fair price would be for that, it's quite unique. I know photos don't always tell the whole story but it looks like a new car. If I had a bottomless pot of cash I'd be very interested in that, sadly at moment I can see the bottom of my pot!
  9. What a rare find, let's hope it goes to a good home and gets brought back to its former glory. It's the same year as my first LS which was fantastic for the five years I owned it.
  10. Long term bereavement I'm guessing! Although I do like the GS series so maybe there's a possibility. I've just had mine serviced by a Jaguar specialist who was in awe of the way it drove, so that means a Jag is out!
  11. Beautiful car, same colour as mine, and in my opinion the best colour ever for the LS. And regardless of what Lexus bring out, the MK4 seats are just as good as you can get, just superb. We're actually very lucky to be living at a time when these cars are available for relatively little money. I can't think of too much from the past that comes close, and as for the future, hmmm...
  12. I think that looks very very nice! It'll be interesting to see how you get on and how it feels compared to the LS.
  13. You should try the Volvo system. Fine when you finally worked it out, but then you forget how to do it next time. Then it has the habit of reverting to Swedish!
  14. Bad luck, at least it didn't happen in France as it may have been worse? I had a flat on mine a couple of weeks ago and ruined the tyre. For some reason the 430 tyre is quite common so easy replacement. Hopefully you had a great time and enjoyed some good wine and soft smelly cheese!
  15. Strange how there's no photos of the interior as such, loads of the exterior, but you would want lots of internal pics before viewing surely.
  16. Actually I seem to recall the whole driving experience was porridge like. It was already well past its sell by date when I foolishly bought it. I was stopped by another driver on one occasion who pointed out the oil dripping from the engine!
  17. .......and now I've re read your post. My luckiest escape was a MK10 Jag when I was only 22. An old banger being knocked out by a back street dealer. Considering my petty wages at the time, and how very tempted I was, a lucky escape from a motoring ball and chain! I would love to say I was also saved from buying an NSU, but sadly I have to cringe at the thought of owning it!
  18. My dad's first and only car was the bus! For me it's always the Chevy Corvette, 69ish and always will be. I did once own a Chevrolet Chevelle (also a 69) but it's nowhere near a Corvette.
  19. I understand peoples concerns with the LS430 should it go wrong in some way. The way I see it is this: I've had mine for 14 months with no issues at all, it cost me £2,400 and its superb. If something serious happened and it wasn't worth repairing I would just sell it for scrap and I wouldn't have lost a fortune. However, it could go on for some years without any real problems, in which case I can't loose. It's always a lottery with these cars.
  20. Superb! And really, how many cars of that age would look sooo good! And one of my favourite colour combos too, well done.
  21. A water pump is generally seen as a very wise move when replacing the cam belt as it saves possible, and expensive, repair bills in the future as the belt has to be removed to get to it. As your post asks for cam belt parts help, the water pump is usually considered to be included, as it is in many cam belt "kits." Therefore the water pump is mentioned to give you that helpful info.
