  1. I think that's sensible advice. Although these older Lexus cars may go wrong less than their luxury European competitors, when they do go wrong (depending on what it is) you may have to dig very deep. Get one by all means as I believe they're the best you can buy from their period, just be prepared for what is eventually unavoidable.
  2. They seem very cheap but they do come from China. If I was going through the process I think I'd want a known brand, it's a lot of work if the product is duff. Saying that it may be worth the risk. Never heard of the seller myself.
  3. I think its just a case of finding the right lubricant and perhaps giving all the mating surfaces a really good clean. Silicone works but it is short lived. One of the issues I had with the GS is the various noises from different parts of the cabin, a shame because it was a very nice car.
  4. There you go, just like Johnny Cash said!
  5. So apart from kicking the cat have you thought about what to do?
  6. The guy who's replacing a shock absorber for me said he used to break LS400 & 430's and he said the one thing that always sat on the shelves with virtually no demand were transmissions as they were so reliable, so this truly is bad luck.
  7. I'm really sorry to hear about all this, I wish I could say something encouraging and positive. It does seem strange that it started out ok though.
  8. It's when I'm driving, if the windows are just lowered by a fraction, by that I mean not enough to notice, the creaking goes. If I clean the seals and spray with silicone it goes for a week or so.
  9. Do you have creaky door rubbers? All three of my LS430's have done it. A fair bit of talk about it on the US forums but not much here.
  10. It's a guy who runs a small business on the site where I am in West Sussex. However, I was talking to him this morning as he was working on a Mercedes and we discussed full resprays to which he replied "I'm not taking an big jobs now, its not worth the effort" He told me he's just working on panels, bumpers and wheels now. I can understand that as there's more profit in the smaller jobs. I highly recommend him for smaller jobs though. Thatcher Motors in Angmering.
  11. Well done you, looking forward to the next instalment!
  12. Ok, that sounds fair enough. If you look up a guy called Paul Frost he may well be able to help you. He trades on eBay as lexussparesdirect. If I can find his number I'll let you know, unless someone else here has it. If anyone can help he can as he breaks Lexus cars and may be able to suggest a way forward.
  13. I'm not suggesting anything here but I would want to see the old belt.
  14. Is this a garage/mechanic that you know and trust?
  15. Well I managed to get the phone paired with the car which surprised me. So far it has been excellent, much better than the GS was. Impressive really for a car that's 15 years old.
  16. Taking some of the above advice I went to Halfords today with my LOC discount card and bought various bits and pieces so I'll see how it works out with the next wash.
  17. One of the problems with the expense of a respray is that an insurance company wouldn't take it into account if you had a minor prang, they just go for a write-off on an older car.
  18. The guy on the site where I work charges between £1,600 and £2,000 for a full respray. A lot of money but imagine how amazing that would look!
  19. That's a fine looking steed but I'm not sure there's much, if anything, that will give you an even shade apart from respray. I suppose a machine polish is worth a try but I'm not convinced I'm afraid.
  20. I've got one coming from Paul Frost this week as I bought my Celsior with a weeping strut. I think I mentioned in another post the guy only wants £75 labour which includes taking the rear seat out. He's done them before so is familiar with the job. It'll be nice to keep it on air but the thing about conventional springs is that it also does away for the need to have 4 height sensors as well. The used strut is £175, better than Lexus Hedge End who want over £1,000 just to supply one!
  21. I'd replace the CTS and not worry about it being an OEM part. Straightforward enough.
  22. Have you tried the main dealer, sometimes their prices for mats aren't too bad. Glad the journey was a great experience (despite the traffic) I was really toying with the idea of taking the newly acquired Celsior to Cornwall in less than two weeks, but as you've reminded me of the "it gets everywhere" Cornish sand reality has kicked in!
  23. Thanks all for taking the time to comment. I'll give some of your ideas a try and see how I get on. 🙂
