  1. As long as he didn't have a hunchback! I think it was called a Variant because daily it varied as to whether it would play ball or not. Plenty of fresh air though due to the rust holes!
  2. I know I've mentioned these two before but my worst, and most unreliable cars ever, a VW Variant and an NSU Prinz, both ancient when I brought them. One of the best, a MK1 Cortina bought for £50! Oh, and I mustn't forget, my Volvo 740GLE, what a rock solid car!
  3. The earlier LS400, ie, the MK1 & 2, not sure about the MK3 had only two coil packs, one for each bank, the most likely one failing is the passenger side due to the heat. A failed coil pack knocks out four cylinders and causes serious overheating in the exhaust system. This is something I discovered with my MK2, the only time it let me down in five years! The good news, only two coil packs and only £25 each (at the time)

  6. Have you tried swapping tyres front to back? I've had the humming noise on various cars, it nearly always turns out to be a tyre, you can't always tell visually if they're ok.

  9. Thanks John, I'm going to get the alignment rechecked this week and when it's there they can do another balancing check, if that doesn't produce anything I may we'll go down the bearing route. Did you fit them yourself?
  10. There wasn't anything too difficult really, but as I say, having an impact wrench was a real bonus. On the first side breaking the main lower ball joint took most effort but when I did the other one I realised I could leave it attached and remove the two parts together. The old bushes were starting to crack and the ball joints, although decent, were much easier to move than the new ones. The track rod ends were fine and with no play within the rack.
  11. Well this morning I finished replacing my bottom ball joints and lower control arms and new bushes. Although the steering now feels a bit tighter I've still got the wobbles! A fairly straightforward job, made much easier having an air impact wrench. I'm guessing I need to get the castor setting checked now so I may just get the wheels balanced again just in case. For the time being I'll just keep below 65mph! I had a good check of the wheel bearings and they seem absolutely fine. I also cleaned the disc mating surface. Not much left to replace now at the front end!
