I'm sure I was charged £150 to fix the starter - plus the cost of the new contacts. I too went down the checking battery route etc, but when it eventually failed to start it was a relay job to the garage. Like most things on these cars, if they are showing a problem at X age or mileage, rest assured it will happen to you - or so it seems lol. Pete

Costco in Aberdeen refused to fit winter tyres to the front of my daughter's front wheel drive car (replacing winter tyres) as they said there should be 4 fitted and would only fit them on the rear. I couldn't see their logic. So she now has summer tyres on front and winters on the rear. I realise that it's best to fit 4, but the summers weren't near replacement time, but will be replaced in due course by winters. Pete

It's a 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air. It's fitted with modern running gear - 6 litre chevrolet LS derived engine (LQ4) and should do 10mpg better than the original 6 cylinder engine, plus be slightly quicker. It was imported from sunny california in 2014 as it is, and I bought it from the guy that imported it 2 weeks ago. It needs a few small things attended to, but it is rust free and is as good in the flesh as the pics. It's an inch shorter than an LS, 3 inches wider and a good bit higher and actually weighs about 300kg less. As it's got 375 bhp it should be quicker too. Pete

Mot passed for another year, but needed handbrake cables and shoes. Advisory for slight corrosion on front to rear brake pipe. Oil and filter change done at same time - Mobil 1 0/40 and Lexus filter. Quite pleased really as it's done 168,106 miles now. It could do with some cleaning and painting underneath, but apart from that it's still looking good. Not many of these cars left now as they get snapped up for their engines. I've just bought another toy, so Lexus use may get less. Pete

My pedal went almost to the floor on my first use of the car after being on hols (never leave brake on if left for a while), so I suspect a cable failure as pedal was fine before hols. Rear discs and handbrake shoes were replaced last year, so I'll investigate before MOT next month. Just another thing wearing out after 18 years I suppose. My car could do with all the niggles sorted, but I'm weighing up if it's all worth doing. Pete

Often, what works on one make of car just doesn't on another. I use Falkens on my LS and find they suit it, particularly wet weather grip, but they don't last. Sub 10k out of rears. Pete

Never skimp on tyres as you may find yourself going backwards through a hedge, doesn't matter if car is worth nothing or thousands - your life is more important than money. My son bought a really nice Toyota Altezza a few years back and it had 4 x new brand X (cheap crap) fitted. I suggested he change them as a matter of urgency, but no. Result, a few months later was a bump (lost back end and hit a wall) resulting in his car being a Cat D. Fortunately he wasn't hurt, but he bought the salvage and repaired car to good again. He then fitted 4 x continentals and car was transformed. Pete

I'm surprised that the Lexus did so well as a good LS400 mk4 will do at best a 15.1 at the drag strip 1/4 mile, whilst most S3's are doing anywhere between low 13's to low 12's depending on tune (some well tweaked ones doing high 11's). This 2 - 3 second difference over the quarter equates to quite a few car lengths at the end. Well done for holding the Lexus end up though. I'll see if I can find the times from a race I had with an LS400 at Crail with my Morris Minor. Pete

I'm in Dundee too, and my wife's 2005 RX 300 has done a best of 28 mpg on the run to Aberdeen and back. That is cruising at 70 mph. In town it does between 19 - 20mpg - average overall is very low 20's. Our daughter in law has one as well and it's mpg returns are very similar. We like the car as it's great for grand kids, but for non grandkid journeys and for conveying elderly relatives, I use my LS400 which just managed a 32 mpg average to Helensburgh via Dalgety Bay last week - and not hanging about either. Give me a shout if you'd like to have a look at the RX, or just a chat. Pete
