  1. I'm sure I was charged £150 to fix the starter - plus the cost of the new contacts. I too went down the checking battery route etc, but when it eventually failed to start it was a relay job to the garage. Like most things on these cars, if they are showing a problem at X age or mileage, rest assured it will happen to you - or so it seems lol. Pete
  2. Costco in Aberdeen refused to fit winter tyres to the front of my daughter's front wheel drive car (replacing winter tyres) as they said there should be 4 fitted and would only fit them on the rear. I couldn't see their logic. So she now has summer tyres on front and winters on the rear. I realise that it's best to fit 4, but the summers weren't near replacement time, but will be replaced in due course by winters. Pete
  3. Out for a drive today and pics of it beside my Lexus. I spotted an LS460 4 doors down from my son's house - same colour as mine, they must just have bought it. Pete
  4. Not really, but I'd been looking at getting an american car for a while to take grandkids to shows as my V8 Minors are only really 2 seaters. I wanted something that could safely cruise with modern traffic and be reliable - and had to look good too. I travelled 425 miles from me to get it. Pete
  5. It's a 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air. It's fitted with modern running gear - 6 litre chevrolet LS derived engine (LQ4) and should do 10mpg better than the original 6 cylinder engine, plus be slightly quicker. It was imported from sunny california in 2014 as it is, and I bought it from the guy that imported it 2 weeks ago. It needs a few small things attended to, but it is rust free and is as good in the flesh as the pics. It's an inch shorter than an LS, 3 inches wider and a good bit higher and actually weighs about 300kg less. As it's got 375 bhp it should be quicker too. Pete
  6. Mot passed for another year, but needed handbrake cables and shoes. Advisory for slight corrosion on front to rear brake pipe. Oil and filter change done at same time - Mobil 1 0/40 and Lexus filter. Quite pleased really as it's done 168,106 miles now. It could do with some cleaning and painting underneath, but apart from that it's still looking good. Not many of these cars left now as they get snapped up for their engines. I've just bought another toy, so Lexus use may get less. Pete
  7. I found the original Pirellis pretty poor both for grip and price, hence I compromised with the 235/55's. Against sat nav the speedo read about 3 mph over, so that's near enough. Original tyres read about 76 from memory. Pete
  8. I fiited 235/55 x17 to my DHP. This size gives as near as possible an accurate speedo reading - 3 mph over at a genuine 70. Pete
  9. This Saturday 25th November at Errol. http://stock.morrisleslie.com/stock/details?reg=R103MSG
  10. My pedal went almost to the floor on my first use of the car after being on hols (never leave brake on if left for a while), so I suspect a cable failure as pedal was fine before hols. Rear discs and handbrake shoes were replaced last year, so I'll investigate before MOT next month. Just another thing wearing out after 18 years I suppose. My car could do with all the niggles sorted, but I'm weighing up if it's all worth doing. Pete
  11. In my opinion prices are rising because they are being broken for their engines. There is a growing scene using Lexus V8's in a wide variety of vehicles. The LS's are an endangered species. Pete
  12. Often, what works on one make of car just doesn't on another. I use Falkens on my LS and find they suit it, particularly wet weather grip, but they don't last. Sub 10k out of rears. Pete
  13. Never skimp on tyres as you may find yourself going backwards through a hedge, doesn't matter if car is worth nothing or thousands - your life is more important than money. My son bought a really nice Toyota Altezza a few years back and it had 4 x new brand X (cheap crap) fitted. I suggested he change them as a matter of urgency, but no. Result, a few months later was a bump (lost back end and hit a wall) resulting in his car being a Cat D. Fortunately he wasn't hurt, but he bought the salvage and repaired car to good again. He then fitted 4 x continentals and car was transformed. Pete
  14. I have the same problem with mine - just happened very recently, so quite an opportune thread. Pete
  15. I use 235/55 x17's on my DHP as this gives the nearest to accurate speedo reading - genuine 70 mph is reading 72/3 depending on tyre wear. I use Falkens and find them very grippy but not long lasting, but I'd rather grip than not. I didn't like the original pirellis at all. Pete
  16. Add to list: MOT history Service records RUST - body and underneath - they are rustier than I expected them to be Gear change quality Accident damage Interior damage Plus all usual used car checks.
  17. Give me a shout and you can look over our one to familiarise yourself - I'm in Broughty Ferry.- pm me for phone number. Pete
  18. Yes, they were like this from 1948 - 1950 until they were changed to the higher position for the american market. I've owned it since 1972 and it's always been modified. Externally it is as it should be for the year, but it's got a Chevy LS1 motor fitted. Pete
  19. Not quick enough, so it's getting a tweak for next year. Pete
  20. I can't find the relevant times, but my Minor does consistent 12.2's @ 116mph.
  21. I'm surprised that the Lexus did so well as a good LS400 mk4 will do at best a 15.1 at the drag strip 1/4 mile, whilst most S3's are doing anywhere between low 13's to low 12's depending on tune (some well tweaked ones doing high 11's). This 2 - 3 second difference over the quarter equates to quite a few car lengths at the end. Well done for holding the Lexus end up though. I'll see if I can find the times from a race I had with an LS400 at Crail with my Morris Minor. Pete
  22. No probs George. However, I can't see an RX 300 doing 30mpg. One thing about the RX series is that they do suffer from underbody rust, so check very carefully. You can have a drive in the wife's one if you like to see if it suits you. Pete
  23. I'm in Dundee too, and my wife's 2005 RX 300 has done a best of 28 mpg on the run to Aberdeen and back. That is cruising at 70 mph. In town it does between 19 - 20mpg - average overall is very low 20's. Our daughter in law has one as well and it's mpg returns are very similar. We like the car as it's great for grand kids, but for non grandkid journeys and for conveying elderly relatives, I use my LS400 which just managed a 32 mpg average to Helensburgh via Dalgety Bay last week - and not hanging about either. Give me a shout if you'd like to have a look at the RX, or just a chat. Pete
