  1. The ones that don't work very well tend to be classical or choral discs, and that is often so even when parked up quietly. With classical there is also the problem that on the move quiet passages can get partly drowned out by even quite low levels of road and engine noise, but if you turn it up then the next crescendo is too loud.

Nobody examining the discs in my car would realise where my real musical interests lie. No Beethoven in sight. But Bob Dylan is there and the DVDA of 'Rumours' works very well, especially if you crank up the volume.

Linn, Naim, Exposure, Ion eh? I am a Meridian man myself.

Not wishing to hijack the post but . . .

    Hi Michael

It's interesting that you say the DVDA (I guess you mean DVD-Audio) of 'Rumours' works very well. I don't have this disc myself, but I do have a couple of Queen DVD-Audio discs. I have to say that these sound great on my 5.1 system at home, but in the car they sound awful. The problem I experience is that, as these discs are already surround sound enabled, the ML system also 'surround sounds' the dics so I end up with two lots of processing in the output. The result being that some of the sounds (think the layered acapellas on Bohemian Rhapsody) are very faint or even disappear completely. I would have thought that the ML system would recognise a DVD-Audio disc and not reprocess the signal. I don't get this problem with a standard DVD.

By the way, really lovely car Normski!

  2. Took the car to Jem Lexus in Edgeware. Was very pleased with the service and the price. Would definitely use them again.

Nice one AndyB glad you liked it mite use them for my next service too

I used their online contact form (2 weeks ago) to ask whether they would price match Lexus for front discs and pads, £320 at Jem - £280 at Lexus (for 5+ yr old IS250), and got no reply. Would have been worth £500 to them for full service and discs/pads, but poor customer service means I'll be back at Lexus unless another recommended independent in my locality is found.

  3. Does anyone else find the navigation voice slight low even when set to 7 and with the music up to about 20? Odd how the music does not lower when the commands are being given.

Yes it is strange that the music volume doesn't lower when the directions are given, I would have thought the command volume would be linked to the music volume, but alas not so. I just turn down the music volume when using the sat nav so that the commands are audible.

  4. Hi Alan,

I have just read your message about a smell you are also getting from your Air Con system. I can't say the smell I was experiencing has gone away completely I think I have just got used to it. I did check the pollen filter but it looked fairly new so I did not replace it. One thing I did try which seemed to reduce the smell slightly and that was running the AC system with the temperature set to maximum for about ten minutes but I had to open the windows because the interior temperature became over powering.

Sorry I haven't anything more positive to report.

    DougB

DougB - you don't have to sit in the car when doing this. Get an Air Con Bomb (as previoiusly mentioned), leave the key fob in the car and wait outside. This worked for me with a cheapo one from Aldi which took 20mins :)

  5. Probably not your Battery if only 6 months old. I had the same thing happen 2 weeks ago. Tried to start the car and it gave up and lost all power within 5 seconds. Got warning 'Check VSC' message. Recovery started the car with booster, and checked the error message with his diagnostic gizmo which reported camshaft sensor, he cleared the message for me (normally £80 at a stealership) for free, and haven't had any trouble since.

  6. Not sure what is done for an 80k service but if your car is over 5 years old (I see yours is a 2007), then Lexus Essential Care Servicing will be cheaper, but 'differs from a standard manufacturers recommended service'. I don't know exactly what that means. Has anyone had one of these services, and if so, how do they differ from the 'recommended'? See the blurb and prices below:

*Interim service at £159 inclusive of parts, labour and VAT @ 20%. Major service available from £279, depending on model type. Essential Care Service differs from standard manufacturer's recommended service. For full details of servicing content please ask your Lexus Centre or call 0845 278 8888.

  7. I agree with Desmond, and to add to that I can't believe there will just be 1 engine choice in the range - seems silly if they want to expand sales. There needs to be several engine options along with choice of bodystyles eg. Estate, Saloon (be brave and make it a hatch saloon as would appeal to more people) and maybe a coupe and convertible. (2WD & 4WD options please) Fingers crossed we will get this but judging by the GS we will probably get another IS250 and probably a 300h if rumors are true. Wish we'd got the IS350 in the UK thats a great engine!

According to the link posted by ironrose:

"The new model will be available as a hybrid for the first time. The Lexus ES 300h is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine. Lexus claims the ES hybrid will cover an average of 48mpg. As with the rest of the Lexus range, it will have four drive modes: Normal, Sport, Eco and EV.

The Lexus ES 350 is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine. No diesel engine is offered, which could limit appeal in European markets."

  8. I am absolutely amazed...................195 views and only 1 reply!! I was expecting to see replies from both 220d and 250 owners giving their views on why they would stick-with or change the car but hey ho, never mind.

Probably because the subject of IS220d vs IS250 has been covered to death on this forum, why not do a search? For my tuppence worth, chop it in before something goes wrong and get an IS250 auto.

  9. Just been out in my winter tyres today for the first time in snow and they proformed brilliantly.

I was a bit unsure at first how they would drive but after driving the length of our street the difference from summer tyres was like night and day.

The best bits today were overtaking a BMW being pushed by two men after getting stuck at a T-junction and driving up a steep hill while the home owners were still out trying to clear the road in order for them to get out in their cars.

    How did you fare today?

Car :IS250SR Auto with Vredestein Wintrac Extreme 225/45/R17 on grey Lexus alloy wheels, tyres bought from Mytyres.co.uk.

I was looking at the same Vredestein tyres, nice to know they performed well. However, do you have 225/45/R17 all round or 245/45/R17 on the rears?

  10. If there are people interested, there are a couple of software programs that will burn mp3 files to a DVD which will be playable in any DVD player, downloadable demo versions are available for both. I have the former and confirm it does work and have hundreds of mp3 files on a single disc, although the latter seems better specified and is half the price.

  11. Pretty sure that If you don't have the MM you only get a 6 disc CD player. I have an SE-L without the MM. And just the full map sat nav and only have a CD player.

Have you tried to play a music DVD? DVD means Digital Versatile Disc, not Digital Video Disc, and in that regard isn't limited to playing video.

I cant say that I have. I will give it a go at some point.

I've tried it and doesn't work. Can only play DVD-video. Bit of a bummer.

It won't play a disc with, for example, mp3 files burned to it. It will play the audio of a dvd video disc or a dvd-audio disc.

  12. How does it do that? I remember someone telling me that my Subaru's gearbox should do the same but neither that nor the IS change down when going down steep hills. Is there a setting you need to be in?

I sometimes change down manually but, to be honest, there is so little engine braking from the IS250 engine that it's hardly worth it. I suppose anything to give the overworked brakes a helping hand is a good idea though.

I always drive in 'power' mode, not sure if it still does it in 'normal'.
