hope it wasn't a Lexus Main Dealer that misdiagnosed ? Malc

I wonder if they have a centralised store ............. they couldn't supply me with one back in January, bet they ordered one up from somewhere and you're the lucky guy who's got the one intended for me as an afterthought and they've had to wait another 11 months to find a buyer ! ...... and it's a " gift " to you at £163 There aren't going to be too many Mk3 owners wanting an alternator for sure Malc

Stuart hi, again ! How's this all going with repair and repatriation etc ? I'm pleased my rear strut bars seemed all ok when my indy checked them for my new MOT this week Malc

ok guys, just sailed thru the MOT at 231,581 miles the water issue has been thoroughly investigated over several days by my indy ........... a slight insignificant potential weep at the bottom ( hose ) of the expansion tank, tightened and sound .......... he says many many O Rings that could have weeped during the hot hot period but he doesn't simply know, as it's not been leaking in the 5 days he's had the car and the trips done to see if the loss would repeat itself ...... it hasn't He's been over everything except taking a peek at the waterpump ( renewed with the cambelt 2.5 yrs ago ) as the work involved is quite immense to get the covers off etc Maybe a sticking thermostat at the time ......... the red coolant when it leaks would be a good tell tale sign of course ........... he's put in some Coolant Seal There was zero dilution with the red coolant even after my topping up about 1.5 gallons at the time ...... indicating evaporation rather than loss, evaporation coz the water only would have steamed away we're thinking, leaving the red constituent behind So there we are, just keeping an eye on it all for the next few months before I get totally confident in her again ! Thank you guys for your great, as usual, input Malc

Pre mot test

simply take it to Halfords to replace the dead bulbs .. they might charge a£10 ? or so but if you watch you'll be able to change them when they go again in 2031 Malc -
I think Toyota Hydrogen fuel cell will shortly be the way to go .............. provided BP, Esso Shell etc can get their acts together to install refuelling points on their forecourts I understand Toyota already have a fleet of these cars with the Met Police in London with refuelling points at Hendon, Heathrow and Swindon Malc

I know that the timing chains can stretch and can snap on the big Nissans ....... and when they snap cause a £6k bill ... destroys much around it Replacing the timing chain before " snap " is possibly a sensible and ££££ economic course to take At least one knows that a timing belt has a service change date and or miles I think you could get a sensible estimate from a competent and trusted garage to replace your now quite old, timing chain Malc

WD40 eh ! surely residue oily stuff will cause lasting damage maybe ? I really don't know in olden times my father used to use a cut potato to wipe across the screen and wiper rubbers to remove crap Malc -
can you just not turn this off ? or down to zero noise level ? Malc

come come, there must be a small local garage in a village that would look after you well, they're all trying to nurture good clients and most are honourable and well-meaning and will do an excellent job for you at a sensible cost I found mine as a back-street indy mechanic who had never touched a Lexus Ls400 before mine .............. 13 years ago now They generally know lots of other mechanica around who could help solve a " problem " Lexus and Toyota Main Dealers ( and all others too probably ) really can't be too bothered with older cars ....... ignoring the potential of the client for a future sale Malc

let me advise this my Honda Legend has developed a MOT dash light failure fault these past 2 years. It cannot be cleared by anyone it seems EXCEPT it can be cleared by my indy mechanic ( who takes it for it's MOT ) for the time of the MOT ....... and she passes ............. of course it's then back on again shortly thereafter The fault just tells everyone that the car cannot be driven in reverse but of course it can, and regularly for parking etc ....... it's just one of those annoying electrical glitches Might I suggest that you build a relationship with a good indy mechanic, tell him the problem and that he should arrange for a sensible MOT pass Could save you £000's Malc

ok Rad Expansion tank has been totally behaving itself of late ....... probably done about 150 miles in 10s, 20s, and 30s and some of it A249 and M2 hard driving too ( now I have the confidence in her back ) and zero change to the water level I really don't understand it, it's bonkers The car is however going to my indy on Monday for it's annual MOT and service AND a thorough investigation of this water issue Malc

sorry too hear of this ................ a few years ago the gf was driving mine off the A2 nr, Eltham and coming off the slip road at tiny mph hit a diesel smear and went head long into the grass bank and shrubs ........ zero damage thankfully, RAC pulled her out, Police stopped all traffic exiting at that junction AND stated that they would have another word with the bus garage just up the road coz it was going to have been yet another bus diesel spill from overfilling that caused the skid ! Malc replied to PaulWhitt20's topic in Lexus General Discussions
Just to remind everyone that this refers to Brand New ONLY and we are very likely to have the option of Hydrogen Fuel cell cars by then .......... non polluting Malc -

rarely take her to the hand carwash, locally about £7 nowadays .................. never the auto one's for sure as afraid those brushes might rip off wipers, mirrors etc at some stage I'm afraid it does rain a lot here, and she glistens when so so wet ....................... she rarely gets a treat of a proper wash ............. I must have saved hundreds of man hours by not washing her ............. when and if it stops raining again I will probably take her to a hand car wash outlet locally .................. they will do a good job on her Malc -
Prius when I was in one, a taxi last June (2019 ) in the City ( of London ) I was so so impressed ........... all black leather, comfy and masses of room where I was sat in the rear that if my Ls400 was ever to depart this life I would seriously consider one such as this I'm reading that they regularly cover 700,000k miles without too many issues Malc

and apartment ( flats ) ............. and where I live, in an old fashioned High Street in Kent where all bar about 10 of the maybe 200 houses have off-road parking and / or potential for electric charging ......... roll on hydrogen fuel cell cars ....... like the Met Police have with refuelling points at Heathrow, Hendon and Swindon .......... and the simplicity of the refuelling when BP, Shell etc install these in their petrol stations Malc -

watch this space for the Toyota or Honda Hydrogen Fuel cell cars that should be coming our way after Brexit with the new UK Japan trade deals and BP, Shell etc placing hydrogen refuelling points in " conventional " petrol stations Malc -
This can happen to anyone at any time but sadly it's happened to you immediately A few days before I bought mine with full Lexus service history some 9.5 years and 125k miles ago one of the springs snapped AND Steve on here had the same thing happen on his .............. just the wrong place at the wrong time I'm afraid BUT all being well your " new " car will prove to be a good'un Malc
