  1. what's the mileage now on the one you're buying ? If the cambelt is way short of 100k miles since the last change i wouldn't panic over it. Malc
  2. ............. it's disappointing when sellers lie about condition and post up previous owners pictures ! That scratch looks a bugger to satisfactorily repair. The cambelt change even if not itemised on the service record ( which is very odd ) should have an appropriate sticker ( from Lexus ) on the top of the engine area .. along with the first cambelt change sticker too ... if it's actually ever been done ! The front two UCAs from Lexus at £820 is probably correct but it's unimaginable that they needed doing at such a low mileage tbh. . and what's a new rear subframe assembly all about for heavens sake ? Summat doesn't seem right to me ......... i would search a little more and maybe the green one will be stacks better than the silver one ..... don't be afraid of stellar mileage if it's been well looked after ......... and maybe the silver one just hasn't been, even for the past 6 months ...... it's beginning to tell a sad story. Good luck Malc
  3. They both look good to view and try out. Have you driven one before ? The silver one especially with £3000 recently spent .... was the work done by Lexus ? I'd certainly view them both and take a pot of cash with you to buy one ( if you can't have them both that is ....... hehehehehe ) Once you're smitten you'll never want another car. Why not use it as your main car ? Malc
  4. my 1992 key fob was a very different type to my 1994 and 1995 key fob ........... posting a piccy of your one might help readers ! Malc
  5. ... are you being nice enough to your car ? they do have feelings you know Malc
  6. hey, I guess you're not in the UK ? Very very few, if any Lexus Ls400s have air suspension here, maybe the odd Celsior but Jap imports. ( I think ) Malc
  7. and for me it's 15 years and continuing .... couldn't agree more with these sentiments and I've driven most types of luxury petrol car ( but not Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche ... . and probably some others too .... but why worry, the older Ls400s are just BRILLIANT ) Malc
  8. hey welcome, I think there was recently a spot on here about an early RX300 section underneath rusting through on the rear suspension or summat, so if that is a part of your MOT failure stuff don't dishearten The owner found a relatively inexpensive fix to get that issue sorted that was otherwise going to cost the national debt to put right. Enjoy your car, older Lexus generally are BRILLIANT if you don't worry too much about cosmetics and the like and want to save yourself a few tens of £000's Malc
  9. ah bless, the older Lss' didn't have satnav ............... nothing to update so my TomTom seems to be fine ...... free for life europewide upgrades and 3 or 4 times a year and all for free apart from the initial cost a couple of years ago now for @£100 I think Malc
  10. we are so lucky with our Ls400s, my indy often praises the car when issues often self-resolve ....... never to reappear ....... must be the built in quality of our earlier Lexuss' Malc
  11. ................. to add £1000 to the cost of the car ? Malc
  12. ....what's all this about genuine lexus oil ........... they don't make oil ! ..... they will use standard Exxon / Shell/ BP or whatever ......... I use an indy ............ and Wilko oil, it's fine My " new " Honda Legend with the Full Honda Service History shows an oil and oil filter change at @ £300 with the oil charged out at £12 a litre ...... what a rip-off Malc
  13. .......... also the same phenomenon with my Ls400 ... big V8 petrol, whisper quiet and creeps up too.......... the number of surprised pedestrians suddenly realising there's a monster stalking them and they don't hear or feel the presence .................... smiles all round Malc
  14. I've just noticed there's a few on www.carandclassic.co.uk .................. so that really says it all about our now quite clearly " classic " cars Malc
  15. ............ remembering now, it is the Peugeot 309 GTi above ............. mine, well I'll be using my Ls400 as an everyday car till it reaches at least that million miles mark Malc
  16. I too have noticed the paucity of Ls400s for sale recently, there was a time when one could be assured of getting a replacement quite easily if one had a write-off or summat, but these days, well, I think there's going to be a huge gap between what insurers are going to want to pay out and what one can reasonably expect to pay to get a replacement ! And they will still write them off for silly damage, busted headlamp, scratched bumpers and all sorts of minor scrapes. I hope they don't get to the point where we were with the Peugeot 305 GTi ( was it those ) where insurers had a policy of just getting them off the road and scrapped at any opportunity. Battles ahead methinks, even more so than normal ! Malc
  17. .... I thought tyres always came with decibel and grip ratings as standard and that should make comparisons easy .......... maybe ........ until you get them on the road on your own car ...... but until then there is some science surrounding whatever it is you end up buying. What make did you purchase in the end ? Malc
  18. ............ yes I think you should look on the forum for more info especially: air suspension woes potential steering column issues Ls600 engine replacement due to Lexus not finding why the warning light showed up ! and a guy on here very recently bought his 460 under warranty and Lexus fixing £9k of parts plus labour under warranty ..................... I don't think I could be that brave and buy either of those models now but it's entirely your decision, I expect there are very many happy satisfied contented owners of the Ls460s and Ls600s ...... doesn't it worry you though that the 2nd hand prices are so bombed out compared to the price new But it's cars generally, some you're lucky with and other's not and then there's our Ls400s which are lulling us all in to a sense of complacency about 2nd hand cars.which is just not deserved in many makes/marques. Spend your money wisely whatever you do.............. and enjoy it. Malc
  19. I should perhaps just mention that I recently went through the thought processes of replacing my Mk3 with a Ls460 or Ls600, probably 2nd hand but maybe not ........could never justify spending the money for brand new and neither could I be worrying about the lack of potential longevity and hence reliability on a 2nd hand one either what with all the issues that a few members on here have experienced ............. so, I kept what I have and bought a 56 plate Honda Legend to replace my 1994 Mazda 323f ( but the Mazda's still going with a new MOT which shocked us all ) ... and my dear old 1932 Triumph that I really can't bear to part with ............. I'll probably just worry no more about cars, especially Lexus and keep to what I have notwithstanding it's a bit long in the tooth, but at 21, well, it's only a quarter the age of the Triumph Malc
  20. ............ there is an issue with obtaining a good quality UCA . or not ...... and if it's not reasonable quality and too cheap then LOC Members here have had them deteriorate just hanging on the wall in their packaging in their garage ! But OEM Lexus are £500 each ..... mine cost £250 ( each ) and seem good quality BUT I have no idea the make coz my Indie supplied and fitted the part. ...... it's in it's 2nd year now and just waiting for the other side to maybe need replacing at the next MOT next summer......... the other side has now done 189k miles Hey It's my Mk3 Ls400 21st Birthday today too ...................... must have a party ............ and the cost of good quality UCAs is tiny compared to what you might need to stump up in the event of age related failure on your suggested Ls600 air suspension and maybe hybrid batteries ............... notwithstanding it's a super luxury saloon costing £100k or so new ..... there's a reason they want to charge £1495 for a years warranty I guess. Good luck whatever you decide upon ............ don't let us over influence your decision eh ! Malc
  21. ............just a thought .........maybe replace the UCA with a good one and then maybe next year the other side too ........ and then you will have a car in even better " fettle " and could easily outlast your suggested Ls600 AND be less troublesome all round perhaps too. Eye-watering the Lexus warranty cost for a year at £1495 ............ you could get your 1995 Mk3 in fantastic condition for that cost alone ! Malc
  22. ... so sorry to see your sad news ................... find the bugger ( fat chance of that I suppose ) and chop the sod's fingers off ! Malc
  23. ...... just to re-iterate previous thoughts for those replacing the battery on a Mk3 Ls400 .......... the OEM Toyota specific battery is actually shaped to fit into the tray which is itself a slightly odd shape and doesn't accommodate, at all well, a standard battery base ! And the Toyota price at that time, for me, was slightly less than the alternative makes prices. My experiences with replacing the batteries on the Mk1 and Mk2 was easy with non OEM, just seemingly straight edged trays I guess. Malc
