LS430 transmission failure - total fluid loss
Malc replied to polymoog's topic in Engine & Transmission
this radiator cost seems a bit dopey ............ the many posts on various bits and pieces here gave me the impression prior that the perfectly adequate non Lexus new radiators can be bought for sensible money and do a good job at preventing this unfortunate gearbox failure arising. There didn't seem, amongst the Posters, any need for a genuine Lexus radiator at all ....... Malc -
LS430 transmission failure - total fluid loss
Malc replied to polymoog's topic in Engine & Transmission
sorry to say that my reading of the forum posts on here relating to this issue generally is that preventative change of the radiator is good BUT when it's too late and the event has occurred then the gearbox is a write-off .................. and the radiator. Look for solace from elsewhere if you can or someone else on here might be able to offer better thoughts for you I hope so .......... the achillees heel of the Ls430 sorry to say My commiserations Malc -
Vehicle Change Insurance
Malc replied to Bluethunder's topic in Lexus F Club - Lexus IS-F / GS-F / RC-F Club
I had a bad experience 5 years back when i moved home and changed postcode .... they loaded me with a huge extra fee stating the risky postcode was to blame. I simply asked for evidence of that and they declined and simply said they did not have to prove it ! Which was quite true. I had no option but to pay tbh so at renewal i went elsewhere but of late have reverted to that same insurance coy coz their premiums are now very very reasonable compared to the market ( for me ) and the postcode ruse used was clearly just that .............. to extract monies from me totally unfairly. My postcode is in an ok area coz my premiums are comparatively ok now. I just can't trust insurers to be at all honest when setting suggested premiums ..... and I guess punters at large feel exactly the same as me ........... insurers just prey on the vulnerable. Shame on them Malc -
Wrong windscreen

fingers xd for you 😊 Malc -
just reality when one is claiming for a car damage issue Malc
-
you might of course need to be able to establish that the specific damage wasn't pre-existing too ! Malc

I noticed the car had some prior odd MOT Advisories and thought your dad might have not had the car long and clearly he has taken the opportunity to sort out the aggravating issues and hopefully now has a brilliant car that will last him a very long time. I don't envy him, I have my Mk3 and had it for about 7 years now, having had a Mk1 and a Mk2 for some 10 years prior, . Brilliant cars to own and drive ENJOY Malc
-
driving locally in one of the best cars ever made is also a joy ! Malc
-
ps has your dad had the car long ? Malc
-
it looks a stunning Mk3 ( a bit like mine only mine's just turned 206k miles and needs a good polish etc ) should last your dad forever methinks .... I personally would get it done properly rather than messing around with breaker's yard and someone to fit it .............. check with the insurer etc BUT the insce. excess should be quite modest and your dad's car looks as if it deserves First Class treatment ( at the insurers expense ) It's quite a stunner Malc
-
be careful sourcing the right glass from a breaker, the 1995 car covered both the Mk2 and the Mk3 and the wrong one possibly won't fit ! Malc
-
you might ( possibly will ) lose your NCB on your household cover HOWEVER it's usually the case that glass claims for cars under fully comprehensive car cover do NOT affect the NCB Ask the car insurer by phone, or your broker, but don't give them the option of knowing you have the right to claim on your household cover coz they will try to push you down that route ... which financially probably won't be to your advantage. The glass can, you say, be supplied by Lexus so there's no problem, it just seems ludicrously expensive ..... an alternative might be to go down the route of finding a car breaker for the glass and then you having it fitted etc ... that's going to be more troublesome than just leaving it to your insurer and Lexus to arrange. You've bought the insurance and it really is there to be used for genuine claims, that what the insurers are in business for Malc
-
either claim on the household cover or claim on his comprehensive car insurance,................ glass claims are usually fault free and don't affect your NCB . subject to a small excess usually It's a glass claim, not just covering the usual windscreen Hope this helps Malc

at 251k miles and Lexus stamps it's inevitable that it's been well looked after and everything's been done that's cropped up from time to time ... it must be impossible to run any car up to that mileage without brilliant servicing and care ....HOWEVER that doesn't mean to say that there's not another bloody great big bombshell just around the corner ........ that's almost inevitable too if one wants to actually drive the car every day and not preserve it in aspic ......... And we're not used to our cars being off the road for long awaiting repair .......... my indy has told me before ( several times now ) that if i buy a Bentley or a RR then it will spend as much time with him being repaired as it will with me .. AND the bills will be huge too for sure. He keeps telling me just to keep to what I know, a Ls400 that i can actually drive all day every day, confidently drive around europe with and in comfort too, with lots of power etc should I ever need it ☺️ My mind's made up ! ......................... well, until the next time Malc
-
well, if you're other car is also a Lexus then there will be some competition ............. otherwise I think you should drive it every day .......... what are you saving it for ? old age ? someone to inherit and drive it for you when you're not here to enjoy it ! Just ENJOY Malc

I've also been thinking about this specific one what with 22 Lexus service stamps and stellar miles and at maybe a sensible price ...... I've also been looking at a P reg 1996 Bentley on autotrader too ( the last of the Rolls Royce factory made cars ) ........... then I got to thinking sensibly too .......... both cars might just suddenly cost me big £££££ even though right now they are probably in splendid condition ........ my Ls400 I KNOW is unlikely to cost me more than the price of a couple of new Bentley tyres in servicing costs over the coming year and neither, likely a fraction of the cost of 4 air struts on the Ls600 if they go in my time with the beast ............. I can afford both cars, individually and together and also the dopey costs if they go awry on me ...... and the ' other half ' understands my old age and need for maybe another car too BUT why would I, I know my Ls400 and think I'll stick with her until I have to part company through some dreadful reason or other ........... I'll just keep looking at the adverts ......Oh, and visiting Classic Car Shows too .......... next one tomorrow, just up the road on Sheppey ................ that might satiate my need Malc

Headlamp restoration
Malc replied to PJD's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
maybe take your car to a local independent body repair shop and ask them to work a little magic on your lamp covers .... shouldn't be too expensive and it will work They make busted cars look like new very often and can use their trade products that are more effective than retail stuff. Malc -
and for me the sheer luxury of driving around in a car that is ...... simply priceless ............ and knowing that the repair and servicing running costs probably won't break the bank of me, rather than the bank of mum and dad or some other high earning Ls modern day owner modern Ls repair and servicing costs at Lexus just frighten me Malc

what's the mileage on your car ? My nearside front UCA had to be replaced at about 173k miles, the offside is still seemingly quite ok at 206k miles ☺️ Miles and road conditions play their part in wear and tear but our Ls components do seem to have longevity Malc
