  1. Hey everyone Just picked this tome up from a Classics car email I get from time to time .................... I've highlighted it in green for obvious reasons there's lots of hope for us V8 aficionados then Malc Synthetic fuels, or synfuels, have been discussed for many years. On paper, they sound fantastic, with the potential to replace fossil fuels and make existing petrol and diesel cars CO2 neutral. But while the technology exists to make such fuels, it’s far or from easy or cheap. Synfuels are produced by combining hydrogen and CO2. Hydrogen can be extracted from water using renewable energy, but for a liquid fuel, carbon is required. This carbon can be recycled from industrial processes or even captured from the air in the form of CO2 using filters, thus turning a greenhouse gas into a resource. Burning synfuel does release CO2 back into the air, but because it can be recaptured, the process is nearly a closed loop. That all makes it sound simple, but it isn’t. Unlike conventional biofuels, they can be produced without the volume limitations, such as the amount of farming land available, and aren’t affected by a limited supply of food stock or waste materials. However, you need still need a mechanism for carbon capture, and getting the hydrogen requires electrolysis to extract it from water – a process that takes plenty of electricity to achieve. These issues mean incredibly expensive production costs. Nevertheless, there’s hope. At the recent Association for Petroleum & Explosives Administration (APEA) conference, attendees were also told that synthetic fuel could arrive on the market by as soon as 2025. Stefan Kunter, managing director and CEO of the Elaflex group of companies, also iterated that they could make a major contribution to reducing carbon emissions from transport without making changes to vehicles or infrastructure
  2. classy colour but suffering from a lack of recent use over the last 5 years I would think possibly buy it at a sensible price, then sort out the cambelt, pulleys and waterpump change, replace the UCAs, make sure all 4 tyres are in good serviceable condition ....... nothing eye-wateringly expensive to do for sure Malc
  3. so cattle and mobiles creating some 70% of this CO2 crap .... and plastics being used in car production anyway, then with bicycle tyres leaving lots of rubber on the roads too and not wearing leather soles are we to just walk barefoot along a sandy beach on a sunny day drinking coconut water ? actually talking to each other for heaven's sake Malc , get a grip, .............. who'd want that sort of life when one can chase around in a 4ltr V8 and drink coffee ground from the grindings of some poor Columbian drug lord banged-up in an eco friendly prison ( one without bars no doubt, or maybe with paper walls ) let's ask Trump for his views then or Greta, assuming we can contact her on her mobile device before she jumps on the next plane outta Davos Malc

  5. so if we turn vegetarian and not eat beans then we are individually allowed to run our Lss' with impunity ....... having offset the carbon emissions of our 4ltr V8s with cabbage. cucumber and lettuce etc Malc
  6. in olden times beware that this type of red very often faded to a yukky pink ... but if it's an original factory 38 coat finish then it should be ok ( I guess ! ) not a colour I would ever go for though Malc
  7. with they say 40% of the world's CO2 emissions cased by cattle farting and eating the cud then maybe where with some 2/3rds of the global population ( and more ) eating vegetarian diets almost exclusively, we should leave India and China from this equation ................... China burns lots of coal however, India is now building the world's supremist humungous solar power plants ever and there's a retro-fit programme for ALL Govt buildings to have solar panels where's the thinking on this for the UK and other western nations ? methinks it's maybe not India you mention as being a major cause of crap air from their society .... although burning crop stubble is a terrible indictment albeit totally banned by the Govt there It's far from being just the motor vehicle that's the cause of CO2 issues, but it is the easiest to bang on about to ***** most people off Malc
  8. and I understand ( from somewhere ) that Toyota are still quite on board with their Hydrogen concept being greener and more friendly and likely to be the forerunner in vehicle propulsion in future times Also reading, as an aside, the outgoing Chair of BP advising that in 8 countries in Asia there is still one new coal fired power plant a week coming on stream ............... ad infinitum and George, compulsory sterilisation for those non green enthusiasts that won't voluntarily accept their part in reducing future population levels maybe ??? ... where oh where will the passion for reducing CO2 levels end 😰 Malc
  9. I'm thinking, from somewhere in my deepest remembering, that if the headlight washer system isn't fully functioning then it's an MOT failure too NOT having such a system at the outset is fine too and all ok for an MOT pass Malc
  10. ah right, I think I understand now so who's up for giving me an interest free non repayable £25k ( loan ?? ) to buy my nice brand new eco friendly EV ? so's it's enabling me to become an eco warrior, in a very friendly way ............ on someone else's budget please of course All ( gifts ? ) gratefully accepted and I will gladly give you my Ls400 to takeaway and in an environmentally friendly way destroy Thank you Malc
  11. so guys, who's for determining the carbon footprint of a brand new build ecofriendly all electric or whatever embracing car vs a vs running our old ladies and NOT buying a brand new EV or Hybrid and scrapping ( sorry I'm swearing ) our monster but beautiful Lss' ............... basically, I guess I'm asking, where's the carbon saving by not using our existing petrol cars ? someone somewhere must have done this exercise in deciding it's beneficial for the whole planet, well us in the UK anyway , to have brand new cars and scrapping petrol Malc

  13. usually an age-old garage trick on very many cars is just to pop out the bulb holder from the housing and let it evaporate out, often with some gentle hairdryer help maybe ! that's assuming you can get to the rear of the lamps ok Malc

  15. Lexus don't make belts !!! nor waterpumps, nor alternators come to that ....... Gates do ................ and a few others all I assume of immense reputational quality that Lexus would be proud to fit as OEM Malc
  16. and you might want to replace the waterpump too whilst it's all apart a bugger of a job I think good luck with it all Malc

I guess you might save some on the £1150 Lexus servicing costs if you went to an indy, that's if there was one you could find and wanted to use Maybe as a 3 car Lexus family the eye-watering bills are ok Well done with your new purchase, glad you're enjoying her do you find the Pirellis ok btw ? I find them hopelessly hard on my Honda Legend Malc
  18. on the Mk3 the foglights are included in the single front light split housing and are white I don't remember either my Mk1 nor Mk2 being other than white Malc
  19. at17 years old every time you fill the tank it's getting closer to that 20% ........... hehehehehe seriously though, our perception of value is often very different to the insurers when it comes to crunch time mine in August was an amazing £1595 with 220k miles ....... the insurers write-off value and some £195 more than I paid for her 8.5 years and 100k miles earlier but then buying her back to repair at 27% of that value, excess etc and the true valu is always more to the holder than the insurers would reckon ........ so mine lives another day, or hopefully 10 years Malc

  21. at 24 years old it could be many things age related and not miles related has the waterpump ever been changed ? it's a big big job and owners might have shyed away from cambelt, pulleys and waterpump stuff coz of the low low miles but 10 years is the time for it, at least a proper inspection or diagnosis however tricky that might be Malc
  22. Delphi is in Gillingham Kent UK if that's any use for the future they are a very reputable name in stuff generally but i know not of coil packs Malc
  23. if you're still looking at that car Mk1 has 15" wheels and tyres ( brakes too ) and I think one less spoke in the wheels too than the Mk2 which has 16" wheels and tyres, brakes etc Malc
