  1. If memory serves me right, the ECU caps deteriorate over time and there are guys around that can fix them as they grow old and knackered and the EGR pipe can be cleaned out with some skill and/or simply blocked off The Japanese cars don't have the EGR pipe ? is that right ? This post is simply for unexpected and instant stoppers that might never get picked up prior to happening, service and issues like the above that never feature on any sort of " normal " servicing schedule unless you're aware ............. and an avid reader on this Forum Malc
  2. Tell me again where this should go to be more evidenced for searching by others ?? Thanks Malc
  3. and there's me having bought my Mk3 in 2011 from Andy Cross of Lexus Poole ..... where I think my car had Full Lexus Service History from 1995 till then ....... they must have gone downhill ! Malc
  4. UNKNOWING CATASTROPHIC FAILURES for earlier Ls400s the following issues can cause your car to perhaps just suddenly become immobilised Rear Strut Bars rust ( inside these ) causes them to perhaps just collapse in normal driving conditions BUT after many years and are age/rust related ......... these are NOT picked up at MOT time ...........on a 93 model these can be replaced both sides with parts no................Tie Rod/Strut rod part 48780-50010 PAS PIPEWORK LEAKS This can often happen through simple fatigue over time and age The pas cooler pipe in front of the radiator can be replaced with simple copper tubing of the appropriate bore size AND the mild steel pipework running down to this can be replaced with the appropriate flexi pipes ...... all in preference to the expensive mild steel replacement Toyota/Lexus parts The pas fluid leaks onto the ALTERNATOR which dies when affected and results in a premature replacement BUT the alternator could randomly fail through age related wear and tear too .............. mine just went suddenly at 227k miles REAR BRAKE PIPES ( in part ) the rustiest part of the rear brake pipes underneath the retaining clips and above the splash shield by the rear offside door, none of which are immediately obvious without some dismantling, so could be missed at MoT time. COIL PACKS the MK1 & 2, not sure about the MK3 had only two coil packs, one for each bank, the most likely one failing is the passenger side due to the heat. A failed coil pack knocks out four cylinders and causes serious overheating in the exhaust system. END Malc
  5. there might be prior posts on this I remember them a little this is NOT too uncommon an issue at your car's age I fear Malc
  6. I understand that the Mk1,2 and Mk3 have a much simpler fix solution in that it is simply a BIG washer and no teccy solution required Mine at 231k miles is still ( fingers xd ) fine Malc
  7. maybe try the website ....... SHOWPLATES ............. I replaced the front one on my Lexus and the rear on the Honda Legend through these guys excellent service AND there's all sorts of sizing options too I haven't yet replaced the rear one on my Ls400 though Malc
  8. if you have confidence in the receipt for that work then 242k miles / 10 years might be fine Malc
  9. you haven't mentioned the current mileage BUT normally for this car you would do timing belt, pulleys and waterpump at 100k miles / 10 years ....... so it might not be quite so urgent maybe ! Malc
  10. don't know how old that film was ? Toyota and Honda have perfected hydrogen power for sure ........ and Japan is going all hydrogen power and NOT electric, saving what electric it can generate for " normal " use for the country a population of nearly 100 million and going all hydrogen methinks Toyota have a Police fleet of hydrogen powered vehicles in London with refilling points at Heathrow, Hendon and Swindon I believe Simply refilling as you would with conventional fuel at a petrol station I guess Come Brexit and sensible non EU import restrictions ( falling away ) on Japanese cars, bringing them in line with EU cars, Mercs, VW Audi Renault Fiat etc should see, imho, a huge increase in sales of non EU produced cars and the advent of the proper start of hydrogen power cars to take the place of electric and hybrid. Just my thoughts Malc
  11. OK, this is coming along I'll try to find time over the weekend to finalise Malc
  12. Stuart hi again can you tell us the overall cost of the parts please Thanks Malc
  13. so sad for your loss Mike . no words can make it easier Malc
  14. Unless the rules have changed ...... one can drive a car ( in the UK ) to a pre-booked MOT without a current MOT ... subject to having insurance of course I don't think there's a distance stipulation either I might be imagining it but in France they don't annually MOT their cars ........... do they ? Just have to make sure the vehicle is appropriately safe so that might help a little Might be cost effective to send your empty, and afterwards full, suitcase by DHL etc rather than pay the silly extra to the airline ... just a thought btw I would never ever ever travel Easyjet if you thought that might be an option ........... nor Ryanair personally but there, I am a travel agent I'm sure Boris today will decide something else to confuse the travel / quarantine issues, god bless him ! Please keep us updated on your trauma Now, can you tell me how much the Strut Bars cost to purchase please ? Thank you Malc
  15. Stuart hi, How's this all going for you ? I thought I'd quote the part number on my schedule of Catastrophic issues when I finally get around to finishing that post ! Is that the definitive part number ? for both sides too ? Thanks Malc
  16. I've had Pirellis on my 2006 Honda Legend too and they are just so so noisy and hard by comparison to the Falkens I have just replaced them with The Pirellis came with the car 4 years ago now and are very very hard wearing whatever, just not suitable for car driving comfort methinks I certainly wouldn't put them on a Lexus ! Malc
  17. In my experience the initial check should show in RED any issues with alignment and then when corrected will show it all in GREEN Yours seems to have zero colour code at all ... or is it my eyesight ? Malc
  18. the lower front trim at the bottom of the main bumper is so so fragile and a tad too low for most kerbs or anything for that matter I had mine surgically removed years ago. I was fed up constantly catching it and the breaks in it Malc
  19. we used to take 2/3 weeks doing it in the Ls400 .... stunning trips Malc
  20. hey guys ........... anything else that causes the car to catastrophically STOP running without any warning ? Malc
  21. rather like the original wheels too what is the colour ? grey or aspen green maybe ? and price paid ? Malc
  22. I think you might find the last Ls600 selling price was more like @£106k ! Malc
