  1. Don't get me wrong, mine's already been visually checked by Lexus and they say it looked ok (not a complete guarantee, I know). I'm still planning to get it changed soon, with tensioners etc, and the water pump as well. But at least I know that in the unlikely chance of it failing, I shouldn't end up with any major damage.
  2. ok, so cambelt failure on the IS200, whilst inconvenient, actually is a lot less bad than has been made out on here. So cambelt replacement is more of a preventative maintenance issue really, rather than something ultra-critical. I feel a lot less bad now about my cambelt being 9 years old !
  3. Was that a 1G-FE engine though ? Presumably it couldn't have been, because if it was non-interference then no damage should have happened ?
  4. Anyone else think that Hamilton's penalty was ridiculous ? There are loads of first-corner incidents like that all the time, are the stewards going to start giving out penalties every time someone makes a mistake like that ? Hamilton locked his wheels, which was certainly a big mistake. But then he was just pretty much a passenger until he could get control of the car again. Massa went off the road and basically drove into the side of Hamilton, which seems totally different in nature to me. Yet they both got the same penalty ? F1 really is a complete farce.
  5. Not sure of the full spec of your car, but there might be enough un-damaged bits to make it worthwhile, if you can buy it at a good price. Glad you were not badly hurt.
  6. I'm even more confused now :duh: Mat, you're saying that Lexus/Toyota say it is not a non-interference engine on the IS200 (which is what the lack of an asterisk seems to indicate in the table above), but it is only some LOC people that say it is non-interference ? I thought it was the other way round in that lots of people have been saying here that it is not non-interference :duh:
  7. On this subject, I smiled last night when an acquaintance (who is about 20 or so) called my IS200 a "boy racer's car"
  8. Noooooo Chris, major bummer. Hope you are ok, and hope this can be sorted out relatively well for you (whether that's a nice repair, a new car or whatever).
  9. I would guess that it's because it's still a bit of a pain for a cambelt to snap in the middle of driving and leave you stranded !
  10. That's interesting. A while back, on another cambelt discussion thread (I tried searching but can't find it right now), I posted that Wikipedia says all the Toyota 1G engines are non-interference, but I assumed that was wrong because so many people here seemed to say that snapped cambelts on the IS200 could cause major damage ! No-one contradicted this at that time. Useful to learn that Wiki is right on this one though !
  11. Thanks Mat, that's what I thought. Yeah but is that just the VVTi though ? Might be a combination of the whole thing, VVTi, engine characteristics, ECU, etc. Anyone got a Camcon and tried playing about with it ? What does it really do on the VVTi front ? On the Power Enterprise website it says that the Camcon : and that it : So putting aside the AFR bit, is that right ? The Camcon is altering the way the valves operate across the rev range really ?
  12. Yeah, I love my dials. And whenever I show someone the car, who hasn't seen inside an IS200 before, the dash generally impresses them too. The fact that it's got a lovely interior as well as being great to drive (and a nice exterior too) makes the IS200 a great package ! :D
  13. Ah ok, brilliant thanks. That makes sense. I was confused earlier by references to nuts and the holes not having a thread. If there's a threaded insert in there somewhere then I see how it would work with a bolt. I'll check through my collection of bolts to see if I've got a variety, if not I'll probably see if I can buy some sort of assorted pack.
  14. Not sure what you mean by the "REAL" power figures. Are you perhaps referring to the power at the wheels as opposed to the engine output power ? Because manufacturer's figures are engine power, not what you get down at the wheels. Since that's what all manufacturers quote, I don't really see the problem, you're still comparing like with like if you compare one engine's power with another.
  15. You haven't changed any electrics in your car recently have you, e.g. fitted a new sound system which could have a fault and be draining the battery ?
  16. As Mark W suggests, if you're either hoping or expecting these things will work, you may unconsciously alter your driving style to turn that into a self-fulfilling prophecy. I suspect that will be the source of any perceived fuel savings that you have noticed. You can make a big difference to your fuel consumption through driving slightly more gently. Maybe you thought the engine note sounded better, so that made you think you didn't need to press on the gas so hard to make progress ?
  17. Sounds like a battery that is not holding its charge properly. I have had that before on some previous cars (non-Lexus). If the battery is several years old, then it may well need replacing.
  18. That's kind of like lorries on our own UK motorways, isn't it ?
  19. Not to keen on taking the bumper off, that sounds like a major job for me :duh: I wonder if I could just stick the horns to the back of the crash bar with some sticky pads ? I can't imagine they're exactly heavy.
  20. There are three fuse boxes. One under the bonnet, and one in each footwell, by your feet.
  21. I just checked and I get a fairly quiet sort of clicking noise when I do this. It happens when the engine is both on and off, though easier to hear with the engine off. It's pretty quiet and doesn't sound like anything I'd worry about myself.
