LS460 or 600H
Cotswold Pete replied to S90's topic in LS 400 / Lexus LS 430 / Lexus LS 460 / Lexus 600h / Lexus 500h Club
Here is interesting link on fitting coilovers to a 460. This would be my preference rather than refurb air suspension. LS 460 coilover report I have often wondered if air suspension could be done with flexible kevlar would it last longer, but I am sure even kevlar would give problems eventually. -
Can you sense whether the vibration is coming from rear or front of the car. If rear then could be trailing arms, or worn drive shaft (not nice) as Phil suggests. However could be handbrake, I had issues with odd vibrations (more like juddeering) at around 40mph, but handbrake was more or less totally siezed, but strangley no overheating. Also what is the status of your shocks, my fronts which are the originals cause a 'sense' of vibration between 30 and 45mph, and seems to vary with tempature, so I am having them replaced next week. Osaka of Newport said all other bushes fine (apart from ARB - they are being replaced at same time), so maybe consider shocks as a key. Best of luck, as over the years have had various vibrations on my Mk4 and Mk3, and never easy to diagnose without going to someone who knows the LS inside out.

battery

I use a local 'motor factor', J E Clarke (Stroud) for general car spares So maybe google 'midlands motor factors' see if any of them can do a good price. My last battery was replaced by RAC and I recall it was about £80 ish about 3 years back. Seemed like a good price abd surprised he had one in the van when he came to sort out my starting issue. -
Agree something going on, I recall the days of driving down the M4 from london, and every day would need to wash windscreen. Drove 550 miles the other day dwon from Pitlochry and the screen as clean as when I left. Not right, sure our 4 litre monsters are doing their bit to change the environment, but the cost of rail travel to Pitlochry made the LS seem cheap to fuel up.

I would suggest never running all the time on supermarket fuel, it is in spec, but does tned to be dirtier as the supermarkets just buy the cheapest they can on the 'spot' market. I recall a few years back Morrisons diesel was the cleanest diesel you could get, but things change in the fuel industry all the time. I only use supermarket petrol about in in every 10 or so refuels. I also try and make sure before an MOT the car has a motorway blast before hand. Hope you get it sorted

That does make sense, and I guess most of your clients want a bit of the bling factor which the Lexus does not have in the mind of the general public. As a business decision it would have to be the 300 as the client's perception is the important thing. I would add, that the first time I got into a 460 was as a passenger, it was a cold blow and a rainy night (as Planxty sang in 1974), I knew the car was a luxury barge and thought I had got into the back of some Merc. Was shocked to be told it was a Lexus. So maybe having clients with bad eye sight and weddings on foul weather days means you could get away with a 460.

IMHO electrics in most modern cars is an issue, no matter the marque other than Lexus who seem to focus on getting that right as much as the mechanics. I have heard the 300 is a poor mans Bentley, and assume just like Bentley after a bit of wear and rear the electrics will be the pain. Also I think the 300 looks like a proper pimps car, or TOWIE Taxi (but that is just my opinion)

Stericker

Good luck with proper investigation. I know from experience that everytime I hear a 'new' noise I start worrying what it might be, especially given my naff hearing (to many Black Sabbath and Status Quo concerts back in the 70s). -
I am using Maxxis on front, Nexen on rear (due to replace in 1500 miles). Nexen have worn really well, around 35K miles, only just had Maxxis On tyre noise, I think the issue if the cabin is quite, and the road isolation is not quite as good as with modern cars, and some road surfaces just make most tyres sound noisy. Did a 500 mile run down from Scotland yesterday, and the noisest section of motorway was from Twekesbury to Cheltenham, and i know from experience in a colleagues Golf that onthat section her car sounds okay but that makes me think this might be because the overall cabin noise a bit higher so it masks the difference on motorway surfaces. I do think Falkens were slightly better, but no longer made to fit LS.

I assume that means you are going to really need the PWR boost to whip past lorries on single carriage ways having chanced your arm. Great for someone thinking if moving abroad to get away from our politicians and their total lack of running the country while arguing over (sorry for swearing), Brexit. Nice price ??

I had a rear one go about 4 year ago, had just the one replaced, and no problems needing the other one done. It was my nearside that went, which tends to be the one that hits more potholes and sunken drain covers, so I guess it had more stress. When it went there was an almight bang, but at the time I did not notice, but was picked up on MOT.

Just had car pass MOT (Brilliant). Car done 195K, but when I took it in I said to look at UCAs as I get a slight knock on speed humps and some road dips (not all the time) and what feels like a vibration, but is not a vibration, more a sense of road rumble. Mechanic says the control arms looking okay (which surprises me at this mileage). Mechanic thinks road rumble at around 40mph, is mainly tyres (could be right as this effect seems to have been there since new tyres 5 months back). However he did say anti-roll bars are looking a bit sad, and will need doing. Questions: Is it best to go for OEM anti-roll, or worth a punt on other makes and what sort of cost should I be looking at. My mechanic will use genuine when I insist, and usually he knows his stuff, as he sorted out my brakes, which no else seemed to manage. Tyres by the way are Nexen Maxxis, so if they are a problem, might move them to rear when I have to get new rears in next month or so, and see what happens. I know a few people have Nexen makes on their LS, anyone else ever had more road rumble than expected with Nexens, they are pretty hard wearing though, my current rear Nexen Blues have done around 35000 miles which is pretty amazing and still have about 3000 left in them. Any advice appreciated. Also to say - Had the sparks changed, and amazed at difference it makes, engine seems a little quiter and pulls even better, and 'odd' gear changes I have been getting seemed to have gone (mainly when negotiating steep downhill section on final run home).

I have this Saris, but the one with three bike mounts. I have tow bar light fittings, so easy to mount a Halfords tail plate. I have carried bikes in daytime without the extra lights, but would be nervous about night time. I drove behind a Volvo V4 last year and in the fading light almost impossible to see when he was braking, indicating, so kept my distance. Also have a few bungees to secure the front wheel, and stop it from knocking bodywork.

Is rock steady, as Nick says. The major exercise is getting the tie ropes sorted as they are rather long. Agree with the 3M tpae, otherswise you might chip the piant (like I did). Good to go at over 70mph, once fitted, and after 5 to 10 miles just check the straps. I assume you will have tail light plate mounted, as the rear clusters are pretty well hidden if if you mount the Saris arms as high as they will go.

Kids and bikes do not go with an LS. I was lucky enough when I had my first LS to have a Passat Estate (great for bikes, horrible to drive). Now got a Saris Bones, but they only carry 3 bikes. Well maybe when the kids have grown up you can come back to the LS Best of luck and the journey to Sennen is always worth it, no matter the vehicle.
