I hope you are having more luck with your M340i than I am with my company one. there hasnt been a month where it hasn't been in the shop. its let me down on the side of the road around 3 times already. Never the same issue.
my wifes X3 is equally as unreliable and it was so expensive after the options were added
Wow. What issues have you had?
The only issue I've had is a failed passenger mirror which was replaced in 1 day (seems like a common issue). Other than that so far it has been reliable.
I kind of knew though when moving to BMW I would be giving up the bullet-proof reliability of Lexus.

I switched from an 08 IS-F to a BMW M340i about a year ago. The IS-F was obviously a better sports car (sharper and better handling), but for daily driving the M340i is brilliant, almost as quick, much more comfortable and the tech in BMWs is miles ahead of Lexus. The BMW B58 engine is so impressive, 0-60 in 4 secs or less and can return 40mpg on the motorway!

Sold mine for around 15K towards the end of last year, same year, 90K miles, but I think yours is in better condition. There is a very limited market for these cars so you have to be lucky as well!

£800 for a speaker and £2k for a DVD changer...WTF?!?
Yes some of the parts cost a lot of money, and here in London labour rate is £150/h which adds up quickly.
8 hours ago, V1J4Y (VJ) said:Its crazy when you see such a list of repairs, nothing on my IS F for the last 2 years except for a set of rear tyres, 11k miles in 2 years daily driver. Is it just chance if a component is on its way out? I went for the Lexus over M3, RS4, AMG combo for this reason alone...much debated over the years on this forum I am sure.
That list of repairs is over 8 years, so its not too bad. The water pump is a known design failure and is replaced almost in every IS. The sat nav screen failing is also extremely common. Blown speaker, well I sometimes like my music loud :-).
The only real issue I've had is the brake caliper leak which caused an MOT failure. But these kind of failures are now expected for what will soon be a 12 year old car!
If you have a 2010 model presumably a lot of these parts may have been revised and are more reliable.
The IS-F is definitely a lot more reliable than the cars you mentioned, I would be surprised to ever see a check engine light!

Would you not be confident enough not to bother with a warranty and just put some money away for a rainy day?
Everyone on here says how reliable they are and although stuff can of course go wrong, I wonder what the average per-year spend on repair work for an ISF is with owners on here?
They are reliable, but when they go wrong they can't cost a huge amount.
When my sat nav went, the repair bill to the warranty company was around £5K. A blown speaker was around £800. A DVD changer issue was around £2K. Brake caliper leak was around £1K.
There is a user here who had a gearbox problem and the repair bill was well over £10K.
If I didn't have warranty I would have probably had to live with some of these faults, or find used parts etc. Putting aside an equivalent amount of money wouldn't have covered the cost of these faults.

@nickisokay is correct in that it has to be purchased before 10 years old. Not sure the service history has to be exclusively done by Lexus so as long its full and complete or in fact if Lexus conduct an inspection to verify the condition.
However there is a trick which worked for me. My ISF was over 9 years old when purchased and had a warranty in place taking it to nearly 11 years old. It was transferred to me by the previous owner. Happy Days. I then purchased a further 2 years from Lexus (it still being under 10 years old) which starts when the existing runs out taking it to nearly 13 years old. Well worth the extra £795 for my piece of mind and that of a new owner if I sell before its 13 years old.
That's a good trick, I wish I would have thought about that!
I am now sticking to one of those third party warranties that probably won't pay up.

Never do pads or discs at a dealer, its an absolute rip-off.
I usually get brembo pads from Eurocarparts for around £40 and my local garage fits them for £20!
Except maybe the brake pipes, everything else should be pretty simple for a local garage to do, you would just need to source the parts.

So, my ISF will be 10yrs old Jan 24th 2020.
I have purchased 2 yrs warranty to begin Jan 1st 2020. All Lexus Birmingham needed was to see the car which they did when I had it serviced. They then offered me the £800 warranty for 2yrs.
My car does not have full service history.
That makes sense since your car will be under 10 years old when the warranty starts. Its whether on the 1st of Jan 2022 you will be allowed to renew it again.

Prepare to go and have words!
It may be titled ' 10 Year / 140,000 Mile Warranty ' but this is the point at which you must have Started the Warranty by, see paragraph 1.1 (f) in document.
Check warranty conditions posted in a link in this thread
Interesting! Goes to show how much the dealers know... still would be good if anyone actually managed to renew it after 10 years. Presumably there are quite a lot of 08 cars reaching that point.

"it's a shame it cannot be renewed any further!"
Are you thinking as the car is over 10 years old you cannot have the warranty?
As far as I understand it, you have to start the Lexus warranty before the 10th year from 1st registration ( also less than 100k miles & full Lexus history or an 'acceptance' inspection is required) but when started it can be renewed past the 10 year mark so as you currently have it you should be able to continue it.

Dealer told me I couldn't renew. I'd be quite angry if this wasn't the case!

@Shahpor you are surprised I was gutted. The service team weren't confident from the off on a 10 year old brake pipe and I let them make the approach (I was in shock). So yes @giorgoXXI normal wear / corrosion, and yes the Lexus Extended Warranty but I'm considering another approach as of course there could be a conflict of interest? or at best they are not as interested as I am in £1300
10 hours labour according to the Lexus service bible (It took the technician about 30 mins to work it out) so £95 / hr then. It's what I was quoted at the start although I gather from the technician who did it that it actually took nearer 13 hrs !! Fair enough they didn't amend the bill.
Good points @doog442 and @PRT68 I did ask the question if they could just piece out the first 6 inches" (which I might have done on a daily shopper car) and was politely told there were no straight bits long enough to do so rear of the diff so wouldn't be any saving. And they did ask if I wanted to trailer it somewhere else but in for a penny in for a pound. I bought the car with full Lexus service history and warranty in place and will sell it similar having wanted for nothing. I don't mind buying 50% off pads but wasn't compromising on this.
Yep @lotusdave and @Texas I had both sides done. The nearside line is a little longer hence the slightly higher price. I disconnected the calliper / flexi at the calliper end so hadn't tinkered with the connection the other end. However I had dosed the union at the other end, as I had with all the other fixings with WD 40. If that's was dislodged any rusted steel to the point it blew out so be it.
@Malc its the fun you have getting to 30mph that makes the difference. A visceral experience tingling all the senses. Hybrid / silent electric wizardry ? No Thanks !!
Shame about the warranty, seems like they weaseled their way out from paying up. I have an 11 year old IS-F, and had a brake caliper leak (instant MOT failure). Initially Lexus warranty denied the claim insisting it was wear (tbh it did seem as wear), then the service centre insisted and finally they agreed to pay for it (£800 to replace the caliper). I've only had good experiences with Lexus warranty and it's a shame it cannot be renewed any further!
You are lucky though with the labour rate, my dealer charges £150/hour!
-
Glad its all fixed now, but why did the warranty refuse to fix it? Did they consider it wear and tear? Was it the official Lexus warranty?
I am also surprised how cheap the labour was considering everything that was done.

That's the total bill which includes new gearbox, new torque converter, new exhaust piece that has the lambda sensor, new lambda sensor and all the labour charge. Next time I am there I will see if I can get the full breakdown of each part but I think the gearbox on it's own is around £8500.
Thanks, it would be interesting to know the labour time to change the gearbox. For 08 owners its crazy to think a gearbox failure can practically write-off the car. I guess if you are out of warranty you could go for a salvaged/reconditioned gearbox as a last resort.
Glad you got it all done under warranty!

Collected the car earlier today. Drives perfect now. The total bill came to £18k in the end.
£18k!? For a gearbox change? It would be good to know the breakdown of the bill...

You can actually put the new one on the older model and it works (almost) perfectly, and the swap is quite easy if you find the part.

So I gave Meguiars PlastX another try, this time spent almost 30 minutes going through the emblem and the results are better but not perfect. I don't know if the improvement is going to last either, the plastic probably needs to be coated to protect it I'm thinking. See pictures below of before and after:
-
Thanks for the replies.
I did try cleaning it off with Meguiars PlastX and got nowhere. It did work for headlights but not for the emblem. Maybe I need to try harder! It did look clean initially but within a minute it would become cloudy again. Is there anything better than Meguiars? Would I have a better chance with the Novus polisher?
If the emblem has no sensors then I don't understand why it is so expensive. The emblem for non-PCS cars is around £50.
-
Hi,
The Lexus emblem in the front grill is looking very hazy, I don't if any of you guys have encountered this issue. I've tried cleaning it off but it seems impossible.
Since the IS-F has PCS, the emblem is really expensive because I think it houses the sensors.
Any ideas how to clean it?
Thanks

I just replaced mine recently as well, got the 17-18 DVD from eBay for £17. It looks genuine but I doubt it is.
As for installation, you have to be very brave to pull from the Warning button like the manual states. It just feels like the button is going to come off. Luckily I had a mini suction cup and it did the job easily. Also make sure you push the screwdrivers/tools all the way in.

Can you identify which part of the tip failed to allow it to fall off please.
Seems a common issue, something that we all can prevent if we spot the failure before it happens.
For example if it's a bracket fatiguing, I would take mine off and weld/reinforce before it broke.I think the part itself was initially flawed, and has been revised since (multiple part numbers exist for the exhaust trim). So I'm guessing only the early 08, maybe 09 models are affected.

As H&S take off the old tips I thought they might have some, but they said the customers take them home with them.
I will keep looking for now, the other link above sells them for £157.
Make sure you also order the screws and fixings for it... mine were so rusted they couldn't be reused. I believe they were only around £25, but can't remember the part number.

Wow expensive!
I got mine from here:
It was a lot of cheaper (I think around £150), and it was a genuine part. Delivered within a week by FedEx.

I had the same issue a few years ago on a 2008 IS-F as well. Hot weather is a factor, but basically the volume would intermittently stop working and then fix itself. But if its the same issue it will eventually completely go, and the fix was to swap the ML unit, which is around £2K (luckily my warranty covered it).

I'm guessing music streaming via Bluetooth is a facelift ISF thing?!?! I know my budget won't stretch to one of the later models so hoping to find out what an earlier ISF can and can't do re an iPhone!
For Bluetooth music you can always get something similar to this:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HLC8I5Y/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have that in my 2008 model and its perfect, auto connects to my phone.
What car next?
