Its okay I got it sorted, looks like its a common issue.
For anyone else that comes across the issue - the leather boot can be pushed down, it clips into the gear knob. The gear knob then can be screwed off anti clockwise, put some locking pliers on the bottom of the metal gear shift stick with some fabric or cardboard between the jaws so you dont damage it, put the gear knob back on and screw on till its straight whilst also holding the locking pliers to counteract the force. Push the leather boot back up into place. Done..
