  1. I have had my 220d for two months now and covered 1500 miles I am currently averaging 42mpg it was slightly higher before the cold weather we have had of late. For the first 500 miles it was returning about 38 mpg but has risen as the miles clock up. In the main my driving to work is on country roads passing through a number of small villages which takes me about 30 mins. The style of driving I adopt is that of the criteria set by The Institute of Advanced Motorists, which is to be in the correct gear for the speed of the vehicle and to make good progress within the speed limits.

I love the car and look forward to each time I drive it, having a few discussions with the dealer at present on my contract mileage allowance but that is another story.

    Welcome Duncan

Drill down through this form and you will learn more than you need to know form looking after your car to faults fault which have appeared over the last couple of years. Keep an open mind because Lexus owners expect nothing less than perfection.

  3. Well, just back from the Lexus test drive , and in short very very disappointed with how the car drove. The service was top class, as was the look of the car (interior, exterior, layout etc). Problem started as soon as I drove it. The engine is noisy...much noiser that the BMW, the gear change felt clumsy and very cluncky, at times i felt like i was driving a truck, and the gearing is really bad...I really didn't know which gear to use, it was all over the place. I was hoping and convincing myself i would love this car...but the drive was so disappointing, i was really gutted. I was expecting a really refined car, as this is what you expect from a Lexus.....but the press is right..it's not that good. I'm considering a petrol version now, but fuel economy is a concern with the miles a rack during the year..... :( Back to the drawing board.

I know and understand exactly where you are coming from, like you I too was disappointed with the test drive of the Lexus. Nevertheless I bought one a 220d SE (after spending many hours researching this site) and I have had it now for four weeks and can honestly say that I love it. Yes the gearing is strange but I am used to that now and know how to use it to good effect, the car generally is very good. Fuel economy at first was in the mid 30s but it is now returning 44mpg after only 500 miles on the clock but I am still driving quite gentle. As for the dealership thay were excellent (Newcastle).

I still get excited every time I get into the car for a drive.

  4. 502 miles on the clock after first 8 days. Filled the tank up today worked out at a better than expected 42 miles to the gallon. (The trip computer was spot on too!) So thats a move in the right direction. General daily commute is 50 miles at 80% motorway 20% A/B roads. Set cruise at around 80mph where i can. Getting used to the car now and beginning to enjoy it. Starting issue is slightly better by getting into the habit of just pressing the button initally, waiting a few seconds and then hitting it again with green light. Only seems to be a problem first thing in morning.

Have you noticed how many BMW drivers seem to look in envy because I have.

Looking forward to a trip to the south cost in a couple of weeks , fully load with wife, kids and luggage, round trip of approx 600 miles so will give some feedback on how things go with that.

Looking at give the paint some winter protection soon. Any recommendations on the polish front?

With regards to polishing I sked the same question and jamboo and Stev were most helpfull see topic "New is a picture" second page some good sound advise.

  5. Hi everyone

After reading the forum for many months and on my third Lexus I've joined at last and hopefully can join in on some of the topics. I'm a fairly high mileage driver having covered 3000 miles in less than a month. First impressions is that I'm amazed at the fuel consumption which has averaged 34 mpg on mainly motorway driving. This is with the cruise set at 80 mph. The adaptive cruise control works very well.

A few niggles. I have the usual rattle from what appears to be the sat nav screen although the dealer promissed I would never have a problem, the fuel flap opens every time you close the boot and the number of chips on the front of the car is worrying after less than a month.

Early days, but generally pleased although I do not thing it is as smooth and quiet as the IS 300 it replaced.

    Will keep you posted

    Welcome to LOC

  6. newboy - yes - use a good non abrasive type product only - your car is new so it doesn't need polishing or anything harsh applied. Klasse (sold as Carlack68 in the UK) is excellent stuff, I couldn't recommend it highly enough for the money - and that P21s is just a wax - but a darn good one.

The chances are that your dealer had polished the car (possibly waxed it too), so it's ready now. Just wait for a dry day, give it a good gentle wash and apply the stuff. You will be amazed!!

ANd it's supposed to be as good as these dealer preperations where they charge you £300, for a fraction of the price DIY!!

Autopia have a good "learn" section, and if as Tango says with the way the £ is against the $, nows a good time to stock up...but just watch them shipping charges - a good UK retailer is www.carsparkle.co.uk - who I tend to use

Thanks for that Jamboo - have placed order with Carsparkle - Merv (newboy)

  7. Some more pictures after eight hours of cleaning !! Washed with Macguires Gold Class, dried, Carlack paint cleanser, Carlack long life sealant two coats. P21s wax and then an extra buff. hard work but well worth it for the results you get.

    Hope it works:

Have heard a lot about P21S not sure how to use on new car (Lexus 220d SE) should I be applying sealent first followed by P21S

  8. Everything went well at the dealership this morning, I can oly describe Lexus Leicester as excellent from start to finish and especially to Jeff who I dealt with in sales.

I have part exchanged my old IS250 for a new IS250 SE-L with auto and MM in Velevet Black and Pembroke leather. The car looked stunning in the handover bay, an enjoyable experience.

Below is a picture outside the dealership - hope it works as I haven't used Virgin Media photo box before:

Only down side of the day is why I was at the dealer I got a phone call from Paintshield to say the fitter had badly cur their hand this morning and was in caualty. So that was cancelled and I'm not sure what I will do about this now as it'll be a 100 mile trip and if it's picked up stone chips on thw way back today or next week then there is no point in doing it. I'll driver carefully and leave bigger gaps and see how it goes.

  9. Picked up my new 220d SE yeterday this is my first Lexus it is black with black leather interior and it looks the business. I thank the many members who post topics on this site it certinatly made very interesting reading in my research. I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the topics but I figure it is simply Lexus owners striving and accepting nothing other than perfection. Thanks to all
