  1. It is the same with the NX300h - if you are too quick things go wrong. Warning buzzers, lights and messages - it is usually an operator error! I now look for the Ready light to illuminate! The car prevents you from doing things for a reason - though I do not always agree!
  2. Sadly, you are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
  3. You need to check the total cost of import - Google it. You can get a vehicle for half the mileage with a full service history for your budget. Try AutoTrader UK https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?advertising-location=at_cars&flrfc=1&include-delivery-option=on&make=Lexus&model=CT 200h&postcode=ct147th&price-to=9000&sort=price-desc#202307240010879
  4. The first car you mentioned (170K miles) I would avoid - too many alarm bells ringing. Is it expensive / difficult to import from the UK?
  5. I thought it a bit expensive considering the mileage. However, I am not up on secondhand prices in Eire.
  6. My 2 year old Hyundai Stellar had to have the whole roof resprayed due to bird droppings!
  7. I thought you had to be posted abroad for a certain time to get the tax discounts? A chap I knew, taught serving military children in Germany. He bought a Volvo very cheaply and sold it at roughly the same price as he paid.
  8. A friend of mine bought a Lancia Beta - it had been Ziebarted! Do you remember Ziebart rustproofing? Made no difference at all! It rusted from the inside out!
  9. Welcome!
  10. Mini Clubman? Oh dear! Please come back to the Mothership!
  11. Nigel, what a lovely family story! A888MHJ is that an Opel Manta? Porche 924? Before the Manta? I could not help looking at the Flickr posts - some very interesting vehicles!
  12. Sorry Stephen, did not know!
  13. RA? Another northern term? By gum you speak right foreign!
  14. If you lived down south you would get many more of these days! We have had crazy weather this September - really warm at night as well. Climate change is here WEATHER we like it or not!
  15. Have you tried the fix above? Windows first then moonroof?
  16. We are definitely on the same page regarding finance! Both my grown up children are, thankfully, sensible with money. I remember, many years ago, a colleague getting married and buying everything new after getting a mortgage for his house. He visited our home and could not believe that we had my old single bed with scatter cushions for a sofa. We were just not prepared to get into any more debt than the mortgage - interest rates were 16% in 1981! Nearly everyone has to borrow at some point in their lives but it is not a good habit to get into. Sadly, many people WANT NOW - they are not prepared to wait.
  17. Brilliant! Not seen that clip
  18. I have driven through a large village that has a 20 mph limit all the way through. I am all for safety but 20 mph is very difficult to maintain - 25 mph might be more reasonable - just my opinion. Back to topic - I am also in the old codgers brigade and have no desire to race around like a headless chicken. Steady driving is much more relaxing and less strenuous on the nerves. It also saves you money. I am not advocating dawdling, but you gain very few minutes on medium length runs. We have all seen the "racing driver" overtake everyone he can and then catch him up at the roadworks! With age comes wisdom - I hope!
  19. I had a quick refresher on Maslow. Interestingly his Safety Needs (second most important), encompass employment, resources and property. I wonder if it can be argued that materialism is an extension of feeling secure? Unfortunately many people get into difficulties because they do not prioritise the most important aspects of their life. For example, your home rent/mortgage should be your first priority, then food and heating.
  20. I imagine that attitudes have changed. Am I being naive? Or possibly just looking at life now in my 60's, where priorites have changed. Things that were very important when I was young, do not seem to bother or interest me that much. I now appreciate I have turned into my Dad!
